McKellen ‘Weepy’ Over Beauty and the Beast

The star-studded cast of Disney's upcoming Beauty and the Beast live-action adaptation gathered together for a first read-through of the script, and the legendary Sir Ian McKellen, who will be the voice of Cogsworth, has shed light on this initial "nerve-wracking" outing.

"There were clusters of white roses on the tables and a mike for each actor so we could be heard above the music from the electronic keyboard and percussion and the glorious voices of a 30-strong choir," McKellen shared in a post on Twitter.

Ian McDiarmid Says the Emperor Is Dead, Dead, Dead

Playing off of Star Wars fans' knowledge of the Expanded Universe, Emperor Palpatine actor Ian McDiarmid had a little fun with the audience during his panel at Star Wars Celebration yesterday, at one point speculating that perhaps the character cloned himself before he took a header down that Death Star shaft in Return of the Jedi.

“The Emperor was too bright not to know that,” said McDiarmid of Darth Vader’s potential to turn back to the side of good and betray his master. “Maybe he cloned himself in time to be in the next movie.”

The Emperor of course made just such a comeback in the EU. But as we all know, the Expanded Universe is now dead. And so, it seems, is Palpatine.

Mortal Kombat X: Modder Unlocks Rain, Sindel and Baraka

A modder has found a way to make unplayable characters from Mortal Kombat X's story mode playable, replete with their own move sets.

XVermillion posted a couple of videos to YouTube of Rain, Sindel and Baraka in training mode on PC, along with an explanation about how he did it on Reddit.

In essence, he took assets located in the game's source files and renamed them so they matched the names currently used by those associated with Shinnok. As a result, the game thinks you're playing with Shinnok, but in actuality you look like one of the other three characters and are able to execute all their moves without hassle.

US Government Once Again Discusses Console Jailbreaking

The US Government is once again considering the legality of jailbreaking consoles.

As reported by ArsTechnica, hacking proponents, along with industry members, are now fighting for proposed exceptions to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act as the Copyright Office reviews Section 1201 exemptions.

Jailbreaking, for those unfamiliar, allows the owner of a platform to modify – or ‘reverse engineer’ – a console, tablet, phone, or similar device, to run unsigned code. If acting within the law, this could be adding streaming functionality to the original Xbox, or running homebrew games on a PS One. The problem, the Law fears, is that by allowing users unrestricted access to unsigned code, people will modify a console so it can run – you guessed it – pirated software.
