18 Sweet Games We Played at BitSummit in Japan

On the world stage, Tokyo Game Show is seen as Japan’s premiere gaming expo, but for me personally, TGS has been a show of diminishing returns for many years. Nowadays, the event I get most excited about in Japan is BitSummit.

This two day event is not necessarily that dissimilar to the indie spaces at PAX, or other consumer shows, but it’s nonetheless an awesome window into what’s happening in the indie scene within Japan, and BitSummit itself still feels very much like a grass roots celebration of gaming: a space being shared by everyone, with tiny start-up studios rubbing shoulders with well-known, high profile industry figures.

This Virtual Reality Game Will Scare The Crap Out Of You

I hear a bright tone – ding! – and then the elevator doors open to reveal a vast cityscape stretching out before my eyes. Protruding in front of me is a wooden board, about three metres long and thirty centimetres wide – just thick enough to accommodate both of my feet, side-by-side. The task here is straightforward: just like the maritime method of execution, I’m meant to walk the plank.

First, I must step up onto the board. I tentatively put my left foot forward, seeking the raised edge. I shift my weight and bring my right foot up to the timber. What’s most surprising is the immediate physical response that I encounter: my heart beats noticeably faster beneath my ribcage, and I begin sweating. My brain has suddenly thrown my balance into question, because never before in my regular life have I found it so hard to put one foot in front of the other.

While Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales topped the box office in its domestic debut, its estimated three-day weekend earnings of $62.2 million make it the second-lowest debut in the history of the franchise.

The film is projected to make approximately $76 million over the four-day weekend, which includes estimated earnings up through Memorial Day. While the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise's performance has been waning domestically, the series has grown in popularity overseas. In fact, the series' fourth entry, On Stranger Tides, is the franchise's highest-grossing installment internationally with $804.6 million, despite it being the first Pirates film that failed to crack $300 million domestically.

In a TV landscape loaded with reboots, reimagines and adaptations of old shows, there's another piece of nostalgia at play: movies. The small screen is filling up with takes on popular movie franchises, to varying degrees of success.

From Westworld to Scream to even The Girlfriend Experience, the cinema has plenty of stories dying to be told in a longer format than a two-hour movie can handle. In fact, for some, they thrive in the televised setting. While as a movie Parenthood was a fun comedy starring Steve Martin, NBC's adaptation became of TV's most beloved series as the family is created warmed the hearts of anyone who tuned in.
