Pirates of the Caribbean 5 Begins Production
Disney announced today that production has commenced on location in Australia on Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer Films’ Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, the fifth installment in the blockbuster franchise inspired by the classic Disney Theme Parks attraction.
Espen Sandberg & Joachim Rønning (Marco Polo, Kon-Tiki) are directing Pirates 5, which will film entirely at Village Roadshow Studios and on locations within Queensland, Australia. The script is by Jeff Nathanson (Catch Me If You Can, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull).
Johnny Depp returns as Captain Jack Sparrow. He's joined by Javier Bardem, Kaya Scodelario (The Maze Runner, Skins), Brenton Thwaites (Maleficent, The Giver) and Golshifteh Farahani (Exodus: Gods and Kings). Series veterans reprising their roles for Pirates 5 include Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa, Kevin R. McNally as Joshamee Gibbs and Stephen Graham as Scrum.
Apple Inspired Star Wars’ Lightsaber Makeover
If you like the redesigned lightsaber revealed in last year's Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer, you can thank Apple chief of design Jony Ive.
In a New Yorker profile on Ive, director J.J. Abrams revealed that Ive offered him "very specific" suggestions about the lightsaber design, which Abrams claims will be reflected in the film.
But according to Ive, he didn't have anything to do with the controversial crossguard. He simply made a case for an uneven flow that was "more analog and more primitive," making it more ominous. "I thought it would be interesting if it were less precise, and just a little bit more spitty."

Blackest Night Comes to DC Deck-Building Game
Cryptozoic Entertainment, maker of board and card games, is priming to release two new additions to their DC Deck Building Game. For the uninitiated, the game lets players become a hero, like Batman or Green Lantern, and build a custom deck full of equipment, super powers, and the like to topple powerful villains. The winner is the one who collects the most victory points, which are earned from buying cards and defeating bad guys.
The first piece of new content is the Crisis 2 expansion pack, out in late February, which can be used with any of the three core sets. It pulls heavily from DC's Blackest Night event comic, which saw DC characters alive and dead become horrifying Black Lanterns aka super-zombies. It features Crisis cards, which gives players the option to play cooperatively instead of competitively.
