DC Comics Battles Rihanna Over ‘Robyn’ Trademark
DC Comics isn't too happy with pop star Rihanna for trying to trademark the name "Robyn," arguing it's too similar to Robin the Boy Wonder.
The American comic book publisher has filed an official opposition to Rihanna's "Robyn" application with the U.S. Trademark and Patent Office, according to Comic Book Resources. The singer and actress, whose full name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty, filed an application in June 2014, planning to use the name with "providing online non-downloadable general feature magazines."
Documentary on Supposed ’80s Mind-Altering Arcade Game Underway
A group of filmmakers have turned to Kickstarter seeking to fund the completion of a video game documentary called The Polybius Conspiracy. The film will explore the urban legend surrounding a supposed game known as Polybius, an arcade cabinet that legend claims briefly existed in several arcades in the Portland, Oregon area during the 1980s.
While there is no evidence that any such game ever actually existed, the filmmakers aim to “dive into the chronology, testimonials, and psychology of the legend; an intersection where urban mythology and dark secrets meet the arcade scene.”
You Can’t Take the Ghosbusters Out of NY
Director Paul Feig is getting set to go into production on his Ghostbusters reboot starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, and Saturday Night Live stars Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon. It was recently revealed that production would be commencing in Boston, which surprised some fans of the original.
New York served as - essentially - a fifth Ghostbuster in the original film, so when we sat down with Ghostbusters director Paul Feig recently to talk about his new movie Spy, we asked if Boston would serve the same function in the new film.
"Oh no, it takes place in New York," Feig assured. "We're just shooting mostly in Boston. The original Ghostbusters shot mostly in LA and then they went to New York and shot some exteriors, so that's basically what we'll be doing too. It just comes down to money and our budget is so high that we need the tax incentive that Massachusetts provides."
The Post-Apocalyptic Racer that Went Extinct Too Early
There have been more than a few games inspired by George Miller’s hugely-influential Mad Max film series. From id’s Rage to the 1992 Mega Drive/SNES game Outlander, all the way back to the virtually impossible 1985 Commodore 64 game The Last V8 (developed David and Richard Darling, who would go on to found Codemasters).
Ratbag’s Powerslide took fewer cues from Miller’s iconic, dystopian film series than other more brazen Mad Max riffs but it definitely felt like the world of Max Rockatansky was a key inspiration for the wild vehicles and decaying environments of Powerslide. The key difference between Mad Max and Powerslide is that, while in Mad Max the world ran out of oil, in Powerslide we ran out of bees.
How Disneyland Inspired Tomorrowland
While the name of the film comes from one of the main areas within Disneyland, Brad Bird and Damon Lindelof did not base Tomorrowland off of specific Disneyland attraction, in the manner of Pirates of the Caribbean or The Haunted Mansion. However, there are some specific nods and homages to Disneyland/Disney parks in the movie and the unspoken idea that Walt Disney himself may have been involved in the film’s futuristic city its characters are on a quest to find.
When I spoke to Bird and the Tomorrowland cast, they discussed how Disneyland and Walt Disney himself inspired the film in a broad sense, even as they created their own new storyline.
You can check out the video above to see what they told me, but some highlights include the following.

Mario Bros. Amiibo Stand Is 8 Bits of Awesome
Game accessories company PowerA will release a Super Mario Bros.-inspired amiibo stand in August.
Spotted on Amazon, the 15-inch tall display mimics the end of World 1-1 from Super Mario Bros. on NES. The stand features an 8-bit style and fits up to six amiibo figurines, meaning the whole Mario Party collection would feel right at home on the decorative piece.

Does Plastic Memories Have Pacing Problems?
Excellent pacing has the power to pull viewers emotions in multiple directions while not letting the show lose its edge, but when done poorly, it can lead to drawn out exposition and poorly contrived subplots. IGN’s Alaina Yee and Miranda Sanchez debate on whether or not the anime Plastic Memories is having pacing problems, or if the pacing is instead being used for a greater emotional effect.
Plastic Memories examines the relationships between humans and androids. Protagonist Tsukasa takes a job in the terminal service department that is responsible for collecting androids that are at the end of their shelf life. As the android expires, it begins to lose its memories, personality, and can even become lethal. Instead of just focusing on one retrieval every week, Plastic Memories features Tsukasa’s relationship with his android partner, Isla.
