Civil War: Black Panther Doesn’t Easily Take a Side

In the midst of the superhero showdown in Captain America: Civil War, audiences will get their first exposure to a longtime Marvel hero who’s never been seen in live-action before, as Black Panther makes his debut.

Played by Chadwick Boseman (42, Get On Up), T’Challa/Black Panther will get his own movie in 2018, directed by Ryan Coogler (Creed). But as for his introduction in Civil War, Boseman, discussing the character while on the set of the Captain America sequel, noted, “It's definitely not an origin story, no…. You meet me as the Prince of Wakanda. You meet me as a politician/monarch, not as a superhero.” However, he added, when we meet him in Civil War, “I am already a Black Panther,” with his emphasis on "A" seemingly referencing the lineage of the title Black Panther.

Civil War: Will You Root for Iron Man?

Captain America: Civil War features Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) in a prominent role, but as the title says, this is Cap’s show. So given that situation, does that make Iron Man the villain by default?

Pondering that question while sitting on the set of Civil War, Downey replied, “It’s difficult for me to think of Tony in those terms, but when you read the comic, it’s like, ‘Man, Tony, you’re blowing it, dude!’”

Producer Nate Moore also brought up the Marvel comics source material, remarking, “When we decided to do Civil War, you read the books again and you realize he really is the villain. He makes a series of decisions that all of us would go, 'Well, that’s questionable if not evil, to do X,Y, and Z.' So we wanted to kind of take those off the table. He’s not cloning Thor, those kinds of ideas that are really fun when you read them on the page, but I think in publishing, it took me a couple years before I was cool with Tony Stark again. In the film, I think the big focus for us in breaking the story was making Tony’s argument so compelling that you go, ‘He’s kinda right.’ And then making Cap so compelling that you go, ‘He’s kinda right. For very different reasons. And they’re both motivated by two very different things.”

Star-Lord and Rocket Raccoon Face Off in Civil War 2 Teaser

The Guardians of the Galaxy are getting in on Marvel Comics' Civil War II teaser action with a new image that pits Star-Lord against his friend Rocket Raccoon.

Take a look:

Art by Phil Noto Art by Phil Noto

Civil War II sees the superhero community split when the death of a yet-to-be-named hero sparks a debate as to whether a new Inhuman's prophetic abilities should be used to punish would-be people for crimes they've yet to commit. Given that Brian Michael Bendis is writing both Civil War II and Guardians, it's probably safe to assume the space-faring characters will have a part to play in this big event.
