The Star Wars Effect: How Nostalgia Can Distort Objectivity

Worry not! This article is totally spoiler free.

I think many of us have felt it... the quickening pulse as the screen lights up with the phrase, “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…” That moment of anticipation and excitement coming to a joyful head before the orchestra hits and those famous yellow letters take the screen. It’s euphoric… and it’s happening again. Can you feel it? It’s like there’s been a re-awakening.

So what lies at the root of all this excitement? Sure, part of it is space wizards, nerf herders, and a big walking carpet, but most of it lives within us, held within the precious treasure trove in our hearts called nostalgia.

For many people, we first experienced this diverse and fantastic universe as children and were amazed and delighted by crazy creatures, thrilling adventures, and the promise of good overcoming evil. We packed those memories up in a tight wrapping of warm feelings and shoved them in a place we could never forget them. Sure, there were rocky times between 1999 and 2005, but our love for Star Wars weathered the assault on our youth. Now, it seems, another era is dawning for Star Wars and the reception is… confusing. While there may be many contributing factors to the mixed reactions of this new generation of films, we’re here to talk about the one that lives in so many of us: nostalgia.

Last Jedi Director Reveals Inspiration for That Weapon

SPOILERS are discussed ahead for Star Wars: The Last Jedi!

Don't read this if you haven't seen the movie! Bookmark this page and come back and check it out after you do!

From the very beginning, Star Wars has taken its inspiration from other stories. C-3PO and R2-D2 were famously inspired by the hapless peasants in The Hidden Fortress. The run on the Death Star at the end of the first film was based on the World War II drama The Dam Busters. Luke Skywalker’s adventures on Dagobah in The Empire Strikes back were inspired by the Russian/Japanese film Dersu Uzala.

The list of explicit influences goes on and on, straight on through Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Filmmaker Rian Johnson has already detailed some of the influences on his new Star Wars sequel, including the silent film - and first-ever Best Picture Oscar winner - Wings, which gave him the idea for how to film the casino scene at Canto Bight.

7 Ways the MCU Can Include the X-Men

Now that Disney CEO Bob Iger has confirmed that, if and when a Disney-Fox merger goes through, Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios would take the lead on the longtime Fox franchise, there's one burning question on the minds of every Marvel fan: How will the X-Men be integrated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

Will we see Marvel Studios start fresh with Wolverine and the gang? Or is it possible that we'll see the MCU pick up where Fox will be leaving off with these characters and giving us more sequels to films like Deadpool and Dark Phoenix? How would that even be possible?

How Resurrecting the Original Doctor Who Connects to the Latest

“It all started out as a mild curiosity in the junkyard, and now it's turned out to be quite a great spirit of adventure.”

It’s been a mainstay of sci-fi pop culture for well over half a century, and now Doctor Who is about to turn another historic page with its 2017 Christmas Special, “Twice Upon a Time.” Seeing out the latest incarnation of the Doctor as played by Peter Capaldi, the episode will have the current Time Lord facing his imminent demise and meeting his first incarnation (as played here by David Bradley, replacing long-gone original actor William Hartnell) when he too is on the verge of regenerating into a new Doctor. Two Doctors are dealing with their mortality, merging past and present while looking to an uncertain future. And for all those viewers that may have become fans long after Hartnell’s Doctor was a distant memory, perhaps it’s a good time to review just what the First Doctor was all about. Yes, hmm!

The 5 Best Streaming Series You Might Have Missed in 2017

The television landscape is expanding in new and exciting ways. With streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and CBS All-Access producing more and more original programming, certain shows can get lost in the chaos of it all. There simply isn't enough time in the day to watch everything, so we came up with a list of the 5 best streaming series you might have missed in 2017.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel made its debut back in March 2017, during Amazon Studios’ pilot season. Thanks to excellent reviews, the series was picked up for a two-season order. Mrs. Maisel is about the life of an extraordinary woman named Miriam Maisel, or “Midge” for short. Set in the late 1950’s, Midge takes on a daring quest to become a comedian in a time when women weren’t supposed to be performing at nightclubs.

Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD: Nick Blood on Hunter’s Return

On Friday's new episode of Marvel's Agents of SHIELD, "Rewind" - airing December 22nd at 9/8c - nothing will stop Fitz from finding the lost team as his incredible journey is revealed and Nick Blood returns to the fold as Lance Hunter.

Blood spoke to me about his new stint to the series, after having last been seen back in Season 3's "Parting Shot" (after which, he and Adrianne Palicki went off to film the Marvel's Most Wanted pilot that didn't get picked up), and revealed what Hunter's role is in this new Season 5 space/time travel adventure.

"Hunter finds Fitz in the middle of this big challenge," Blood explained. "Fitz is trying to figure out and work out how he’s going to find the rest of his gang, who's off who knows where, it's a mystery, and Hunter is gladly available to come and lend a helping hand. Then the two of them go a bit renegade and move off the grid slightly. Obviously, Hunter’s still got to keep his head down since he’s still exiled from SHIELD. But yeah, this episode was a chance for those two guys to hang out and bond. It was a lot of fun. It's quite funny too."

Arrow Can’t Use Deathstroke Anymore Because of DC Movie

Arrow will soon no longer be able to use Deathstroke, and it's all because of the upcoming DC movie starring Joe Manganiello as the character.

In an interview with Discussing Film, Arrow executive producer Marc Guggenheim explained there are limitations put in place regarding what DC characters Arrow can use and not use.

“These are DC’s characters; we’re just renting them you know, so we use the characters that they tell us we can use when we can use them, and we work around whatever limitations that places us,” Guggenheim said.

Manu Bennett has portrayed Slade Wilson on The CW show. Now, unfortunately for Arrow fans, Warner Bros. and DC have put said limitations on Deathstroke once again.
