Ashes of Creation’s Dynamic World Allows Cities to Rise and Fall

In one moment, I see a field of empty grass; the next, I’m looking at a thriving elven village with blocks of cozy shops sprawling over a sea of cobblestones. Rome may not have been built in a day, but this joint went up in a fraction of a second.

Steven Sharif, creative director for the upcoming Kickstarter-funded MMORPG Ashes of Creation, warns me this kind of growth should normally take days. Through developer magic, he and lead designer Jeffrey Bard are showing me the way the game's various invisible “nodes” can transform into entire cities based on heavy player activity in the area, but we've skipped over previous stages that include tents and encampments to see this place in advanced form.

How Project Octopath Traveler Is Improving After Demo

Square Enix has made a number of improvements to Project Octopath Traveler following its September demo.

The company released a video, which you can watch below, detailing all of the changes made to the game in response to the feedback survey for the demo, which has been downloaded over a million times.

Square Enix has made changes to map traversal, the game's user interface, the battle system, and more.

Players can now run automatically by pushing the analog stick all the way, and you can run even faster by also holding down the B button on the Nintendo Switch Joy-Con controllers. However, running faster will make the encounter rate go up. A fast travel option will also be added. And more prominent landmarks, as well as different coloring to the environments, have been included to make landscapes more readable to the player while exploring.

Taipei Game Show 2018 in a Few Words and Lots of Pictures

While Taipei Game Show is a physically smaller show than E3 or Tokyo Game Show, its attendance – 350,000 punters and 2,400 trade visitors during the five days 25-29 January – is a reminder that gamers in the small but important market of Taiwan are hungry for new things to play.

Indeed, a 2015 Google report cited in The Taipei Times reports that 66 percent of the population play games for at least 30 minutes a day, with an almost even balance between male and female gamers. Mobile devices are ubiquitous in Taiwan, and 92 percent of gamers in the Google survey said they have played mobile games. Still, console games are a growing chunk of the market, and according to a recent NewZoo report, one-quarter of Taiwanese gamers are playing on all three platforms – PC, console and mobile. That means there are lots of hardcore gamers in Taiwan.

Taiwanese Games at Taipei Game Show 2018

Most of the biggest games at Taipei Game Show 2018 came from Japan, China, Hong Kong or the West, but a selection of homegrown indie titles and arcade games showed that innovation is strong among smaller developers in Taiwan. Here's a roundup of some of the great local games I played during my visit.

Already available on Steam Early Access, Fight of Gods is a 2D fighting game where all of the cast are real-world deities or mythological figures. While the idea of a violent face-off between Jesus and Buddha is obviously grossly inappropriate, the game is not being sold on shock value alone. For one thing, as a fighting game it is pretty robust, and each character comes with a rich variety of animations. I played as Santa (not strictly a god, but certainly worshipped by many), who attacks by throwing gifts from his sack or piling into his opponent with a reindeer-driven sleigh as a special move. Also, the developers insist that they hope the game's roster will inspire players to learn about deities from other cultures. A sick cash-grab or something deeper? Check it out on Steam and decide for yourself.
