System Shock Remaster Put on ‘Hiatus’

The System Shock remaster is on hiatus, and the team is reassessing the best path forward in development.

Nightdive Studios' CEO and founder Stephen Kick made the announcement on the game's Kickstarter page, assuring fans the game has not been cancelled, merely postponed, to give the team time to "return to

vision" of the game.

In the hiatus announcement, Kick said during development, due in part to changing game engines from Unity to Unreal, and the team's subsequent ability and desire to "

more," the team strayed "from the core concepts of the original title." The team went through changes, and the scope, concept, and budget for the game changed as well.

Jean Grey Is Better Off Without the Phoenix

Jean Grey has been dead in the comic books for 15 years, but now she’s back with a twist that completely changes the game for the character.

Warning: full spoilers ahead for Phoenix Resurrection: The Return of Jean Grey and X-Men Red!

Jean Grey was brought back to life by the Phoenix in the pages of January’s Phoenix Resurrection #5. But instead of bonding once more with the cosmic entity that gave her incredible powers, Jean turned the Phoenix away. It was a truly shocking twist, but it immediately made sense why the folks at Marvel Comics decided to do it: Jean Grey is better off without the Phoenix.

UPDATE: This promotion has been extended until June 30.

If you have a 4K TV, you probably know streaming in 4K can sometimes be a dicey proposition. For now, the best way to truly make the most of TV is via 4K Ultra HD Blu-rays. The problem? They're expensive. Like $30 for just Mad Max: Fury Road expensive. Amazon seems to agree, and is running a very solid and very tempting special sale on UHD 4K Blu-rays: buy any 3 for $49.99, with an extensive list to choose from. That's $16.66 a piece for those that have trouble with math, which represents the cheapest price many of these 4K UHD Blu-rays have hit yet.

Why Netflix’s Queer Eye is Worth Your Time, Even If You Think You’ll Hate It

Update, 6/15/2018: Season 2 of Queer Eye premiered on Netflix this week, so here's our take on why the series is worth your time.

There's a moment in Season 1, episode 3 of Netflix's Queer Eye when the veneer of a glossy makeover show slips, and we see a microcosm of America contained in one fraught interaction.

First, some background: The series follows five gay men -- Food & Wine connoisseur Antoni Porowski, Interior Design expert Bobby Berk, Culture consultant Karamo Brown, Grooming pro Jonathan Van Ness, and Fashion phenom Tan France -- who spend a week helping transform the lives of people (not just "straight guys" this time around) who need a little help, whether that's in their social interactions, wardrobe, diet, lifestyle or, most often, all of the above. After five days of advice, confidence-building and some truly excellent decorating, the "Fab Five" leave their "hero" to try and put their wisdom into action, hopefully learning a thing or two about self-love in the process.

Nintendo’s 10 Coolest Cheapskate Creations Before Labo

How about that Nintendo Labo, huh? Video games built around cardboard! What a nutty idea! Or… is it? In truth, Labo fits perfectly into Nintendo's lengthy history of creating interesting play experiences with low-cost materials. The company has been spinning fun out of mundane, unexpected objects for half a century, ever since the late Gunpei Yokoi got bored on assembly line duty and invented the company's first-ever hit toy (the Ultra Hand) for his own amusement.

Yokoi's legacy lives on in Labo. He once described his core philosophy as a toy and game maker as "lateral thinking with seasoned technology"—that is, coming up with fun and surprising concepts built around common, inexpensive tech. From calculator watches to chunks of cardboard, this unconventional, economic approach to design has always been one of Nintendo's greatest strengths. In honor of Labo, we've combed through history and found the 10 most brilliant examples of the company turning boring ideas into boundless fun.
