Geoff Keighley Weighs in on PS5 and Xbox Series X

In the latest episode of IGN Unfiltered, Geoff Keighley talked about the upcoming launch of the Xbox Series X and PS5, and how the philosophies of each platform impact their standing. Ryan McCaffrey sat down with Keighley to discuss a wide range of topics in the latest episode of IGN Unfiltered, including his friendship with Hideo Kojima, Keighley's storied history with awards shows, the cancellation of E3, what the 2020 Game Awards will be like, and much, much more. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/08/25/geoff-keighley-talks-game-awards-hideo-kojima-xbox-vs-ps5-and-more-ign-unfiltered-53"] When asked about his thoughts on the upcoming generation of consoles, and the current position both Sony and Microsoft occupy in the console landscape, Keighley said, "What I will say overall is, I'm amazed that two new consoles are coming out this year, in this environment... In terms of the positioning of the machines... they're going down different paths. "I think PlayStation is in a really strong position. I think [the] PS5 [is a] great machine... the controller, which I've got to play with, is really, really cool. An amazing lineup of first-party games. They're kind of running the same play that they've run before, and [it] worked really well for them. The games they showed in their lineup... the SSD stuff looks incredible. So I'm excited about that." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/06/11/playstation-5-reveal-reactions-breakdown-console-design-ps5-sequels-and-more"] "Xbox is playing a different game. I think the Game Pass stuff is a really compelling story for them... I think Xbox has a good story as well, and a different story than what Sony is approaching... I think Xbox has to really deliver the great first-party games. That's always the challenge for them, and I think Halo had its challenges [at the Xbox Games Showcase] when they showed it." Following the interview, it was announced that Halo Infinite will be pushed to 2021, meaning it will no longer be a launch title for Series X. Check out the Next-Gen Console Watch discussion on the ramifications of this announcement. "Who knows what Sony has for launch? They've been kind of vague about it. They have a lot of games coming, but what's actually coming at launch, around it? And overall, I think it's a different generation, because... I think one of the biggest launch games is going to be Cyberpunk for all of these systems, which is just gonna run better on [Series X and PS5], but [it has] forwards and backwards compatibility, so it's different. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/03/20/ps5-vs-xbox-series-x-full-spec-analysis-next-gen-console-watch"] "I think Sony has a really strong story to tell. We don't know what the price is there, but I'm really excited about some of the games that I've seen there. Sony's mastery of these incredibly rich single-player experiences. I think Xbox has a really good story about value for gamers, around a lot of diversity of choice. "I think Sony's challenge will be... the price and the premium experience, and making sure that people are able to... purchase into that this year. Xbox's challenge, I think, is that Game Pass is great, but it's gotta have the really great flagship games in it. You don't want it to... be like your 'basic cable package,' where it's like, 'It has a lot of cool stuff, but what I really want is HBO' and those games are outside of Game Pass... That's kind of a long-winded answer, but I'm really excited about the new consoles. I think both consoles have really unique, interesting stories to tell." COD Black Ops Cold War Runs at 4K 120hz on Next-Gen Consoles

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will run at 4K resolution and with refresh rates of 120hz on next-gen consoles. In an interview with Venture Beat, Treyarch studio co-head Dan Bunting said: "We want to make sure that the framerate is responsive, and that it feels like there’s nothing on the technical side preventing you from having a good time.” [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/08/26/call-of-duty-black-ops-cold-war-reveal-trailer"] Supporting a refresh rates of 120hz means the potential of up to 120fps. The article does not state if Cold War will be locked at 120fps on next-gen, but if the PS5 and Xbox Series X are capable of such frame rates in 4K with the graphical fidelity shown in the new trailer, then it's a seriously strong showing. In addition to high frame rates, the PS5 version of the game will also support haptic feedback, while both consoles' SSD drives mean that Cold War has no loading screens between cinematics and gameplay. And, not to miss out on next-gen's flagship tech, the game features real-time ray tracing. That's a lot to render at 120fps. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=call-of-duty-black-ops-cold-war-campaign-screenshots&captions=true"] It's worth noting that not all TVs have such high refresh rates (many older models are capped at 60hz or 100hz) and those that do support 120hz require high-speed HDMI v2.1 cables to deliver the frame rates. If you're hoping for this kind of performance it's worth seeing what your TV can output. But even 4K/60fps from Cold War is likely to look impressive. If you're not up to date with this year's COD, Black Ops Cold War is a return to the original BlOps team of Mason, Woods, and Hudson and is set in 1981. It releases this November 13 and will be available in a variety of bundles. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Matt Purslow is IGN's UK News and Entertainment Writer.

Resident Evil Live-Action Series Confirmed By Netflix

After more than a year of speculation about the possibility of Netflix developing a Resident Evil series, the streaming giant has finally confirmed that a live-action adaptation of Capcom's legendary survival-horror franchise is in the works. According to Netflix, Resident Evil will tell a brand new story across two timelines. Here's how Netflix describes the Resident Evil show in a brief synopsis: "In the first timeline, fourteen-year-old sisters Jade and Billie Wesker are moved to New Raccoon City. A manufactured, corporate town, forced on them right as adolescence is in full swing. But the more time they spend there, the more they come to realize that the town is more than it seems and their father (editor's note: Albert Wesker, we presume!) may be concealing dark secrets. Secrets that could destroy the world. Cut to the second timeline, well over a decade into the future: there are less than fifteen million people left on Earth. And more than six billion monsters -- people and animals infected with the T-virus. Jade, now thirty, struggles to survive in this New World, while the secrets from her past - about her sister, her father, and herself - continue to haunt her." [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=every-ign-resident-evil-game-review-ever&captions=true"] Netflix has also released an image of the first script via its NX Twitter account: RE While no casting information has been announced, Netflix did reveal that the eight-episode first season of hour-long episodes will be brought to life by showrunner and writer Andrew Dabb (Supernatural), and director Bronwen Hughes (The Walking Dead), who will direct the first two episodes. Both Dabb and Hughes will serve as executive producers alongside Robert Kulzer and Oliver Berben of Constantin Film, and Mary Leah Sutton. "Resident Evil is my favorite game of all time," Dabb explained. "I'm incredibly excited to tell a new chapter in this amazing story and bring the first-ever Resident Evil series to Netflix members around the world. For every type of Resident Evil fan, including those joining us for the first time, the series will be complete with a lot of old friends, and some things (bloodthirsty, insane things) people have never seen before." Thousand Threads Review — Post Secrets

Thousand Threads opens outside a tent in an unknown land, a dirt path presenting one potential way forward. If you stray from it, odds are a wolf will take notice and attack; you might fend it off with a stick, you might outrun it, or you might accidentally lead it to a house and watch in horror as it attacks the two randomly generated occupants that were sitting calmly a moment before, minding their own business. You might seek out more people and start performing little odd jobs for them; you might also return to the path and find the dead body of the region's mail carrier, still carrying a sack of undelivered letters.

It's a hell of a setup for Thousand Threads, a first-person exploration game that, over several hours, delivers on few of the promises these opening minutes set up. Nothing I experienced in the game after quite matched the excitement I felt in those opening minutes up to the point where I found the dead mail carrier. That's not to say the game isn't charming in places, though--this large open world has stories to tell and sights to see, even if they emerge at an achingly slow pace.

Halo Vet Joseph Staten Joins 343 to Get Halo Infinite ‘Back on Track’

Update (8/26/20) - Microsoft and 343 Industries have confirmed that Joseph Staten will "be returning home to Halo for a bit." The news was revealed on Halo Waypoint, further clarifying that Staten will officially be joining as project lead for Halo Infinite's campaign after helping launch Tell Me Why this week. In addition to Staten, Pierre Hintze, the head of the publishing team for Halo: The Master Chief Collection, will be joining the Halo Infinite team as a project lead for its Free-To-Play multiplayer experience. Hintze and his team "have demonstrated an amazing ability to deliver new content, an excellent flighting program, and substantive updates across MCC over the past year." Original story follows. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Halo veteran Joseph Staten, who was instrumental in the success of Bungie's Halo games, has been brought over to 343 Industries to help get Halo Infinite "back on track." As reported by Bloomberg, Microsoft will also be shifting one more senior leader to Halo Infinite, and sources say these changes are to "provide more expertise to the project." Microsoft is expected to announce these moves as early as tomorrow, August 27. Staten and the other senior leader will reportedly work with studio head Chris Lee and report to Bonnie Ross, the Microsoft VP who oversees 343. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/08/12/halo-infinites-delay-is-the-right-movebut-a-painful-one"] Staten began his career at Bungie in 1998 as a product manager on Myth II: Soulblighter, and was the writer and director of cinematics for Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2, the writer for Halo 3 and Halo: Reach, a creative consultant for Halo Wars, the writer and creative director of Halo 3: ODST, and the writer and co-creative director for Destiny. Staten did leave Bungie in 2013, before the release of Destiny, and he rejoined Microsoft in 2014 to work on non-Halo games in the Xbox portfolio. According to Bloomberg, he was overseeing another Microsoft-published game before this decision. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=confirmed-xbox-series-x-games&captions=true"] Halo Infinite was delayed to 2021 earlier this month, and it was undoubtedly a difficult decision as it was set up to be the marquee launch game for the Xbox Series X. For more on Halo Infinite, read 343 Industries response to some of its biggest concerns and its statement on how it has "no plans" to delay Halo Infinite until 2022 and remove Xbox One support.
