The Umbrella Academy is Netflix’s Biggest Hit Since The Witcher

Though a third season of Netflix's The Umbrella Academy has yet to be announced, the show is doing stellar numbers for the streaming giant, with Nielsen revealing that the series, since its Season 2 drop back on July 31, has pulled in numbers and headlines the first list of Top Streaming Shows in the US. Netflix may dominate this list thanks to shows like The Office and Grey's Anatomy but its the company's original series Umbrella Academy that lands in the number one spot - with 3 billion minutes watched over the week of August 3-9. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/07/31/the-umbrella-academy-season-2-review"] During the same window, viewers binged 1.1 billion minutes of the runner-up, Shameless, and 918 million minutes watching of number three, Grey's Anatomy. The last time Netflix had a hit this big it was with The Witcher, which became the second-biggest TV hit of 2019, behind Stranger Things: Season 4. Even in 2019, The Umbrella Academy was a success since its first season placed third behind Stranger Things. Here's how Nielsen's Top Streaming Shows in the US list breaks down:

  • 1. The Umbrella Academy, 3.01 billion minutes viewed
  • 2. Shameless, 1.13 billion
  • 3. Grey’s Anatomy, 918 million
  • 4. The Office, 897 million
  • 5. Criminal Minds, 697 million
  • 6. NCIS, 524 million
  • 7. In the Dark, 418 million
  • 8. Dexter, 316 million
  • 9. Supernatural, 315 million
  • 10. Parks and Recreation, 304 million

Viewers absorbed more minutes of The Umbrella Academy's first and second season when Season 2 released more than a month ago than the next three shows on the list combined. WarnerMedia Fires Back at Ray Fisher Over Justice League Allegations

WarnerMedia issued a statement Friday night regarding the third-party investigation into Justice League actor Ray Fisher's claims that reshoots director Joss Whedon ran a toxic, hostile set and that former DC Films co-chairs Geoff Johns and Jon Berg enabled the alleged bad behavior. Fisher has also claimed Johns reprimanded him for complaining up the chain about it at the time, and on Friday alleged that DC Films boss Walter Hamada pressed Fisher to "relent on Geoff Johns." WarnerMedia issued the following lengthy statement to Variety on Friday, slamming the Cyborg star and denying Fisher's claims about Hamada. The studio also alleges that Fisher has refused to meet with their third party investigator to discuss the case. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/justice-league-the-snyder-cut-trailer"] The statement also reveals that Warner Bros. wanted Fisher and other Justice League cast members to appear in the upcoming Flash movie. Read WarnerMedia's full statement below:

"In July, Ray Fisher’s representatives asked DC Films President Walter Hamada to talk to Mr. Fisher about his concerns during the production of Justice League. The two had previously spoken when Mr. Hamada asked him to reprise his role as Cyborg in Warner Bros.’ upcoming Flash movie, together with other members of the Justice League. In their July conversation, Mr. Fisher recounted disagreements he’d had with the film’s creative team regarding his portrayal of Cyborg, and complained that his suggested script revisions were not adopted. Mr. Hamada explained that creative differences are a normal part of the production process, and that a film’s writer/director ultimately has to be in charge of these matters. Notably, Mr. Hamada also told Mr. Fisher that he would elevate his concerns to WarnerMedia so they could conduct an investigation. At no time did Mr. Hamada ever “throw anyone under the bus,” as Mr. Fisher has falsely claimed, or render any judgments about the “Justice League” production, in which Mr. Hamada had no involvement, since filming occurred before Mr. Hamada was elevated to his current position.

While Mr. Fisher never alleged any actionable misconduct against him, WarnerMedia nonetheless initiated an investigation into the concerns he’d raised about his character’s portrayal. Still not satisfied, Mr. Fisher insisted that WarnerMedia hire an independent third party investigator. This investigator has attempted multiple times to meet with Mr. Fisher to discuss his concerns but, to date, Mr. Fisher has declined to speak to the investigator. Warner Bros. remains committed to accountability and to the well-being of every cast and crew member on each of its productions. It also remains committed to investigating any specific and credible allegation of misconduct, which thus far Mr. Fisher has failed to provide."

We'll bring you more on the case as it develops. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=justice-league-snyder-cut-all-the-known-differences-from-the-theatrical-version&captions=true"]

Alan Ritchson will play Jack Reacher in the upcoming Amazon TV series based off the book series. Amazon announced the news in a press release on Friday. Ritchson celebrated on his verified Instagram page with a screenshot of an article confirming the news. Alan Ritchson plays Hank Hall in the DC Comics TV series Titans.[/caption] Season 1 of the Jack Reacher series will cover the events of the novel, The Killing Floor, which was released in 1997 and spawned a series that has sold over 100 million books. The 25th Jack Reacher novel is set to hit bookshelves in October. The series as a whole follows a highly-skilled ex-Army major named Jack Reacher who solves miscellaneous cases across the United States using the techniques he mastered during his time in service. Nick Santora, who used to write and produce Prison Break, will serve as a writer and showrunner for the Jack Reacher series. The author of the book series is executive producing the Amazon show along with filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie, who recently directed Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher in a theatrically-released movie from 2012. Ritchson has played Hank Hall on Titans, Raphael in the recent live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies, and Thad on Blue Mountain State. He is set to appear in season 3 of Titans and will join a bunch of famous Batman characters. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=fall-tv-preview-2020-new-and-returning-shows-to-watch&captions=true"] The Rock recently revealed that he wanted to play Jack Reacher in the 2012 movie, but lost the role to Cruise. IGN's review of the Jack Reacher movie says, "Cruise is the rare action star who brings both brawn and brains to a role, and he does what he can, but is limited by a mediocre script and clichéd direction." A sequel was released starring Cruise in 2016. IGN's review of the Jack Reacher sequel called the movie, "a fun, absurd action romp with a few memorable moments that can’t help but be boosted by Cruise’s natural onscreen charisma." As for Amazon Prime, there is now a watch party feature through Twitch and here is a list of everything coming to the service in September to test that feature with.
