Deathloop Brings Back Powers From Dishonored

During the IGN Fan Fest Deathloop panel, developer Arkane revealed multiple interesting new details about the mechanics that drive its upcoming time loop assassination game. Among those fresh facts is the news that it will feature returning powers from the Dishonored series, as well as bone charm-style modifications for both weapons and your character. Deathloop's Game Director, Dinga Bakaba, explained that some powers players will have used in Dishonored will appear in Deathloop. “As much as we wanted to do something very original with this game, we also wanted some familiarity,” he explained. “We decided to bring back quite a few of the powers that we have in the Dishonored series,” he continued. “I think it’s something that will make players feel right at home. And then there are a few twists and modifications. I think that’s a good view of the main player tools.” Watch the exclusive new trailer below: [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/02/26/deathloop-explained-exclusive-game-trailer-ign-fan-fest-2021"] Bakaba stopped short of revealing exactly what those powers are, but we can already see in the gameplay trailer that protagonist Colt is able to use a teleport ability similar to Dishonored’s Blink. Hopefully there will be some fun twists on other Dishonored skills; something like Emily’s Domino ability would certainly come in handy. Also akin to Dishonored, you’ll find items around the world that can modify both your weapons and your own physical self. “Trinkets are small pieces of metal imbued with the power of the anomaly that is causing the time loop,” Bakaba explained. “By equipping those trinkets, you can change the properties of your weapons. On top of that, you can also use some Trinkets to actually mod yourself, so being able to jump higher, run faster, regenerate some health when you assassinate someone, things like that.” Trinkets provide passive upgrades, then, much like Dishonored’s bone charms. But if you need a more significant upgrade, then you’ll need to hunt down a Slab. “Slabs allow the user to do various things,” Bakaba said. “So for instance, Alexis, one of the targets, has a Slab called Kinesis that allows him to throw people around, forward, backward, upward, sideways, et cetera. So he will actually use that to throw his own allies at you. I’ve even seen him throw Juliana at me once. And of course, you can get that power out of him and use it.” Since Slabs provide very powerful abilities, they are among the world’s rarest items. “There’s not even one Slab per Visionary,” said Bakaba, referring to the eight main targets of Deathloop. “Most of the Visionaries have their own Slabs, and the only way to get those Slabs is to defeat one of those Visionaries and take it with you.” Check out the full IGN Fan Fest panel below: [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/02/26/an-inside-look-at-bethesdas-deathloop-ign-fan-fest-2021"] These powers will help you solve Deathloop’s overarching puzzle: how to kill all eight of the Visionaries in one day. Doing so will break the time loop. However, your targets are located around different parts of the island, with two in each of its four districts. You can approach each target individually, but you will run out of time and the loop will reset. The secret is finding out how to bring targets together, at different times of the day, so that multiple Visionaries can be taken out in one assault. Importantly, there is only one way to kill all the targets in time. “In order to line them up there is only one solution, so really the game is a gigantic puzzle that you have to solve and in order to complete that puzzle,” said Bakaba. “There is one way to break the time loop.” While there is a golden solution to ensuring all the targets are in place, the way you kill those targets is entirely up to you. “There are some ways that we open for you, like opportunities in the sense of maybe using the environment, or learning about some dangerous things that are in their levels, or making [the target] weaker in different ways,” Bakaba said. “So there are some things that we kind of prepare for you, but overall, yes, you can get at the target in the way you want.” This is, of course, similar to Dishonored, which offers some suggested methods of execution, but ultimately leaves the approach in your hands. The time it takes to solve that puzzle varies on how long it takes you to discover the individual parts of its solution, as well as how much exploration and experimentation you want to do, but Bakaba suggested a “focussed” playthrough, sticking to the main path of the game, will be “comparable to our former games” in length. Superman Movie Reboot in the Works at Warner Bros.

Warner Bros. is gearing up to reboot the Superman franchise on the big screen. As first reported by Shadow and Act and confirmed by Deadline, the studio is pursuing a new take on the Man of Steel, one produced through JJ Abrams' Bad Robot and written by Ta-Nehisi Coates. Bad Robot's Hannah Minghella is producing the reboot. No actors are currently attached to the movie, and it's unclear if Henry Cavill will remain in the lead role or if the cape and tights will pass to a new actor. Variety also confirms the news, along with a statement from Coates, and indicates no casting has yet taken place. However, Coates also seems to suggest the reboot is still set in the DCEU. “To be invited into the DC Extended Universe by Warner Bros., DC Films and Bad Robot is an honor,” Coates said. “I look forward to meaningfully adding to the legacy of America’s most iconic mythic hero.” [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2017/04/07/see-henry-cavill-wearing-christopher-reeves-superman-costume"] This is the latest DC project to which Abrams has become attached since Bad Robot signed a lucrative overall deal with WarnerMedia. Abrams is also overseeing a Justice League Dark series on HBO Max, and that series is connected to the recently revealed Constantine reboot. Coates, meanwhile, is a celebrated writer and journalist who penned the book Between the World and Me and currently writes Marvel's monthly Black Panther and Captain America comics. Coates is also writing Wrong Answer, an upcoming film that reunites Black Panther director Ryan Coogler and star Michael. B. Jordan. Given that Jordan himself has pitched Warners on a Superman reboot, it's not impossible fans may see him become the new Man of Steel. Update: The Hollywood Reporter's sources are specifically billing the reboot as "a Black Superman story." THR notes the studio was reluctant to pursue that angle when originally pitched by Jordan in 2019, but executives seem to have come around in recent months. THR's sources also clarify that while this project isn't connected to Jordan's pitch, that doesn't necessarily rule out the possibility of Jordan becoming attached to star. As Superman fans may remember, Abrams himself was once attached to direct a Superman reboot in the early 2000's. Abrams' Superman: Flyby would have been the start of a new trilogy featuring a very different take on Superman and Krypton. Unfortunately, it's one of many DC movies that never came to pass. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=dc-extended-universe-every-upcoming-movie&captions=true"] The timing of this news is certainly odd, given that WarnerMedia is weeks away from debuting Zack Snyder's Justice League on HBO Max and The CW just launched their newest Arrowverse series, Superman & Lois. However, the company has increasingly begun to emphasize the idea of a live-action DC multiverse in recent years, so we may well see this new Superman coexist with Cavill and Tyler Hoechlin's respective versions. Does this news have you excited at the prospect of a new Superman movie? Let us know in the comments below. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Jesse is a mild-mannered staff writer for IGN. The Script for Face/off 2 Is Almost Complete

The script for the sequel to 1990s John Woo classic, Face/Off, is almost complete, and has been written to be a direct, “definitive follow-up” to the story. Talking to IGN as part of Fan Fest 2021, Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard updated us on the progress he’s making with the action flick sequel. He made it very clear that he and his writing partner, Simon Barrett, are penning a true sequel, rather than any kind of reboot. “I would never make a remake of Face Off,” said Wingard. “I would never make a reboot. And I've seen a lot of people, even after I said that this is a direct sequel, they keep calling it a reboot hybrid sequel or remake hybrid sequel. It's none of that.” [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2015/11/17/faceoff-official-trailer"] “This is Face Off Two,” he stressed. “And I can't say what that means exactly, but this is either going to be the definitive follow-up to that movie and everything that entails, or I'm not going to make it, because everything's got to line up perfectly.” As for the progress being made on the film, Wingard says that the script is almost complete. “The script's going really good, Simon [Barrett] and I are almost finished,” he said. “And Simon, who I worked with on You're Next and The Guest, we've been working a lot over quarantine, and this was our main project.” “Face-Off Two. That's what it is,” Wingard emphasised. “It is Face Off Two, and I'll just leave it at that.” What this means in regards to the events and casting of the film is unclear, but a direct sequel does suggest that we could see John Travolta return as Sean Archer. Whatever the case may be, Wingard is attached to direct, while Fast and Furious creative Neal Mortiz will produce for Paramount. Godzilla vs. Kong Definitely Won’t End in a Draw, Says Director

Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard has made clear that, unlike previous films, his movie will end in a definitive winner of the monster match-up, saying, "This is the decider [...] One wins, and that's it." Speaking during an IGN Fan Fest panel, Wingard explained that he wants this movie to feel like a fight between the "legitimate" versions of Godzilla and King Kong, and to let it act as a definitive answer to which would win in a fight. That's in part inspired by the original King King vs. Godzilla movie's more ambiguous answer to that question: "When I think back to the original movie, King Kong vs. Godzilla, I remember having conversations with my friends, talking about that film when I was a kid, and we were still debating who would win in a fight, Godzilla or King Kong. And that film for one, doesn't really pick a winner. It's very much a draw. It's very unclear and muddy who wins." Watch the exclusive clip "Godzilla Meets Kong" below: [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/02/26/godzilla-vs-kong-godzilla-meets-kong-exclusive-clip-ign-fan-fest-2021"] Wingard makes extremely clear that there will absolutely be clarity around who wins in his take on the concept: "I just wanted this to feel like the real matchup. I wanted you to walk away from this. I wanted there to be no more arguments on the playground. This is the decider. You don't have to debate it anymore. You watch this film. That's Godzilla, that's King Kong. They're beating the shit out of each other, and one wins, and that's it." Watch the moment below: Wingard also made very clear that he's aiming to make a movie in which the two monsters feel like the 'definitive' versions of each, to lend that final result a level of authenticity. It;s a feeling Wingard thought was missing from the original King Kong vs. Godzilla, and from Zack Snyder's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/02/26/godzilla-vs-kong-director-one-wins-and-thats-it-ign-fan-fest-2021"] "An issue I have with [the original King Kong vs. Godzilla] – and it's a similar issue I have with Batman v Superman, another versus movie – is, at that point, King Kong was very much a stop motion character. That's how we knew him. That's what he looked like. And and then obviously, later on in the '70s, you had the Rick Baker version, and that's sort of what we identified King Kong as, but it's still relatively similar to the original. The Toho version of King Kong in King Kong vs. Godzilla, he's so different than any other version we've seen. It's the first time we've seen a guy in a suit. And just his look, he just looks way different than any version. So it doesn't quite feel like this is the definitive King Kong vs. Godzilla, even if the movie had kind of a winner. "And so, going into this, I was thinking about that. And then I was thinking about Batman v Superman. And it's a similar thing, where you have Christian Bale as the definitive Batman in the Christopher Nolan trilogy, and that's who we knew him as. And obviously, Dark Knight Rises was his last picture. And so, when Batman v Superman comes around, that's the first time we see the re-casted Batman as Ben Affleck, and it's kind of in a different universe. It's in the Zack Snyder universe, which is very different than the Nolan thing. And this is just my opinion, but my problem with that movie is just on a fundamental aesthetic level almost, that it felt like a different Batman. So it didn't feel like the true legitimate Batman v Superman movie." Godzilla vs Kong There are still questions about whether the true villain of Godzilla vs. Kong has yet to be revealed, but Wingard also made clear that Godzilla is playing the heel to King Kong's face: "I don't want to spoil the movie, but I will say that you're going to see Godzilla do things that you've never seen him do before, and you're going to see them act different ways. And so, there's going to be a lot of really fun surprises. And here's the thing, is like, Godzilla is the heel in this movie. I mean, you see it in the trailer. He's causing a lot of problems. And the fun thing about when Godzilla is causing problems is that, that means he's blowing a lot of shit up, and he's causing a lot of destruction and mayhem. And so, for me, I get to have fun with that. That's one of the best parts of making this film is I get the naughty Godzilla, and he causes a lot of havoc." And maybe don't worry too much about the game's PG-13 rating, as Wingard says he'll be bringing some of his horror movie sensibilities with him: "I think that no matter, even if I tried not to, I would still do it. I mean, funny enough, this is the first PG-13 movie I've ever made, out of all the films, but it's definitely got some gory moments in it actually." [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=godzilla-vs-kong-whos-who-the-human-cast-and-characters&captions=true"] Godzilla vs. Kong will be released on March 26 internationally, and a few days later on March 31 in the US (in both theaters and streaming on HBO Max). Netflix’s Shadow and Bone Cast Break Down the Teaser Trailer’s Biggest Moments

The first teaser trailer for Netflix's Shadow and Bone has arrived, and IGN gave fans an exclusive inside look at the epic new fantasy series as part of IGN Fan Fest 2021. Shadow and Bone is based on author Leigh Bardugo's bestselling series of "Grishaverse" novels, which have sold more than 2.5 million copies worldwide to date. IGN exclusively revealed the first teaser trailer from the series as part of an in-depth panel and Q&A with Bardugo, showrunner Eric Heisserer, and cast members Jessie Mei Li, Ben Barnes, Archie Renaux, Freddy Carter, Amita Suman, and Kit Young, uniting the cast and producers for their first public interview about the show. Watch the cast and creators react to the Shadow and Bone teaser trailer and break down the biggest moments in the video below: [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/02/26/netflixs-shadow-and-bone-teaser-trailer-cast-reaction-and-breakdown-ign-fan-fest-2021"] Here's how Netflix describes the ambitious new series: "Shadow and Bone finds us in a war-torn world where lowly soldier and orphan Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li) has just unleashed an extraordinary power that could be the key to setting her country free. With the monstrous threat of the Shadow Fold looming, Alina is torn from everything she knows to train as part of an elite army of magical soldiers known as Grisha. But as she struggles to hone her power, she finds that allies and enemies can be one and the same and that nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. There are dangerous forces at play, including a crew of charismatic criminals, and it will take more than magic to survive."

Where Does Shadow and Bone Take Place?

The world-building in Shadow and Bone is dense and meticulous, creating a lived-in fantasy landscape that's every bit as detailed as the likes of Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, or The Witcher. The action takes place across several warring countries: Ravka, a land split in half by a deadly magical anomaly known as the Shadow Fold, which is full of hideous, flesh-eating monsters called volcra; the island of Kerch, a wealthy trading hub with a seedy criminal underbelly; the mountainous Shu Han, which boasts a huge army; and the icy Fjerda, whose people are raised to hate and hunt down the magical Grisha.

What Are the Grisha?

Similar to Harry Potter, certain people in Bardugo's Grishaverse are born with magical abilities that manifest in different ways, enabling them to train as Grisha to defend Ravka as members of the Second Army. Each Grisha is divided into a different "Order" depending on their powers - more on that below. If you were wondering, the First Army is made up of regular human soldiers without special abilities; when our story begins, Alina is a cartographer in the First Army, alongside her childhood best friend Mal (Archie Renaux), a gifted tracker who's handy in a fight - both of whom mistrust the Grisha and their powers. Watch the hilarious blooper reel from our IGN Fan Fest Shadow and Bone panel: [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/02/26/netflixs-shadow-and-bone-panel-cast-bloopers-and-outtakes-ign-fan-fest-2021"] Some Grisha have the power to manipulate another person's body, from repairing a wound to crushing a heart - they're known as Corporalki, who are trained to heal or kill; the Etherealki can control the elements, summoning wind, fire, or water; while the Materialki can manipulate wood, stone, metal, or chemicals to create just about anything you can imagine. The Grisha are led by the powerful and enigmatic General Kirigan (Ben Barnes), known to his enemies as the Darkling, who has the power to summon darkness, while Alina, as revealed in the trailer, has the rare and prophesized gift of being able to summon sunlight - perhaps the only Grisha ability that could potentially destroy the Shadow Fold.

How Does Shadow and Bone Combine With Six of Crows?

Bardugo's sprawling series of Grishaverse novels currently encompasses the Shadow and Bone trilogy, the Six of Crows duology, the King of Scars duology, The Language of Thorns, and The Lives of Saints, with more on the way. One of the most interesting aspects of the Netflix adaptation for existing fans is the choice to play with the chronology of Bardugo's novels and have characters from Six of Crows (which takes place after the events of the Shadow and Bone trilogy in the timeline of the novels) intersect with characters from Shadow and Bone, creating a storyline that melds Bardugo's original narrative with some brand new plot threads. While Shadow and Bone follows the story of Alina, Mal, and the Darkling (along with a whole host of other characters you'll come to know and obsess over), Six of Crows follows the exploits of a criminal gang led by Kaz Brekker (Freddy Carter), a wily and ambitious young gangster who's quickly making a name for himself in Kerch's corrupt capital city, Ketterdam. His closest allies are Inej (Amita Suman), aka "the Wraith," a gifted spy with knife skills to die for, and the quick-witted Jesper (Kit Young), a sharpshooter with a teeny tiny (major) gambling problem. These characters don't interact with Alina, Mal, or the Darkling at all in Bardugo's novels, so how their stories intertwine will be a surprise even for those who've read the books, which explains why the actors were so wary of spilling any potential spoilers in our Q&A. And the rest was really trying to figure out what storyline could fit alongside the events of Shadow and Bone that would possibly provide some opportunities for them to bump against each other now and then." Bardugo noted, "I’ve been lucky enough that Eric has included me in a lot of these conversations from the start and I got to be in the writers’ room and to try to be a resource and also to speak up when I was concerned that we might be coming up with something cool that might blow up the road in front of us without us realizing it."
