Gamer Saves Friend’s Life From 5,000 Miles Away

A 20-year-old gamer in America saved a friend's life from more than 5,000 miles away earlier this month, according to a report from the BBC. 17-year-old North West England resident Aidan Jackson was playing video games online with his friend, 20-year-old Texas resident Dia Lathora, on January 2 when Jackson experienced a seizure. "I just put my headset back on and I heard what I could only describe as a seizure, so obviously I started to get worried and immediately started asking what was going on and if he was okay," Lathora said to Liverpool Echo. "When he didn’t respond I instantly started to look up the emergency number for the EU. When that didn’t work I just had to hope the non-emergency would work, it had an option for talking to a real person, and I can’t tell you how quickly I clicked that button." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/12/31/the-best-games-of-the-decade-2010-2019"] BBC reports that Lathora had Jackson's address even though the two never met in person. Police arrived to Jackson's surprised parents at 9:40 p.m., about 40 minutes after Jackson's seizure reportedly started. Jackson's parents told police they hadn't called anyone, but when police explained the call had come from America, Jackson's mother went upstairs to check on her son, finding him "extremely disorientated." Aidan Jackson had previously experienced a seizure in May 2019, according to the BBC. He is currently awaiting a new appointment at a local hospital to address the issue. Jackson's parents expressed gratitude for Lathora's quick action. "We are extremely thankful for what Dia did and shocked that we could be downstairs and not know anything was happening," Ms Jackson told the BBC. "Dia had our address but didn't have any contact numbers, so it was amazing she managed to get help from so far away. I've spoken to her and expressed our thanks - she's just glad she could help. Aidan is a lot better and hopefully everything is OK when he has his appointment at the hospital but he's doing well." Awesome Games Done Quick Raises $3.13 Million For Charity

Awesome Games Done Quick, the video game speedrunning marathon that raises money for various charities, has finished its week-long 2020 run by raising $3.13 million for the Prevent Cancer Foundation.

AGDQ 2020 also received more monetary donations than any other Games Done Quick event in the past, according to a press release. Games Done Quick says it received more than 54,000 donations from across more than 80 countries.

[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/01/11/getting-over-it-developer-reacts-to-1-minute-24-second-speedrun"]

As for viewership, it was another big year for AGDQ. More than 2,750 attended the event itself at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in Orlando, Florida. While being broadcast on Twitch throughout the week, AGDQ reached a peak concurrent viewer count of 236,000 people.

Awesome Games Done Quick 2020 managed to beat out every other Games Done Quick event for the highest amount of money raised. The closest runner-up is 2019’s Summer Games Done Quick, which raised just over $3 million.

Since its inception in 2010, Games Done Quick as an organization has raised more than $25 million for a variety of charities, including AbleGamers, Doctors Without Borders, and Organization for Autism Research.

[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/01/12/control-developers-react-to-49-minute-speedrun"]

This year’s AGDQ included speedruns on games like Sekiro, Untitled Goose Game, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, BioShock, Marvel’s Spider-Man, The Outer Worlds, and many more.

Miss this year’s Games Done Quick marathon? You can find a playlist of some of the speedruns on YouTube. You can also check out our videos of game developers reacting to speedruns of their own games. Here’s two developers behind Control reacting to a 49-minute speedrun, and here’s Benett Foddy reacting to a 1-minute, 24-second speedrun of his infamously difficult QWOP game, Getting Over It.

The next Games Done Quick event will be Summer Games Done Quick, on June 21-28.

1917 Topples Rise of Skywalker at the Box Office

In a huge leap from its limited release back on Christmas Day, and following the film's big win at the Golden Globes, Sam Mendes' critically-acclaimed 1917 shot to to the top of the box office charts this weekend with an estimated $36.5 million. A tally large enough to knock Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker out of the number one spot. Per Deadline, 1917 has now earned $39.2 million so far. Rise of Skywalker still pulled in enough to land in second place, with $15.1 million, inching closer to earning a billion globally. It now stands at $990 million globally. Originally projected to make about $20 million, 1917 blew past expectations. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/12/10/1917-extended-featurette"]

North American Box Office Estimates

Aside from 1917's wide release, three new movies hit the multiplex this weekend, all landing in the Top 10 (though none particularly strong). The biggest debut of the three was Like a Boss, starring Tiffany Haddish, Rose Byrne, and Salma Hayek. It landed in fourth place with an estimated $10 million. Warner Bros.’ Just Mercy, starring Jamie Foxx and Michael B. Jordan followed in fifth, with - well - around $10 million as well. So these two might swap places by tomorrow. Underwater, however, which stars Kirsten Stewart, tanked with $7 million. Underwater follows the crew of a subterranean ocean laboratory dealing with an aggressive alien threat, with our own review calling it "a slick and enjoyable sci-fi thriller that never quite breaches greatness." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/08/19/underwater-trailer-1"] Here are the Top 10 North American box office estimates for the weekend (via Box Office Mojo)

  • 1. 1917 $36,500,000
  • 2. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker $15,059,000
  • 3. Jumanji: The Next Level $14,000,000
  • 4. Like a Boss $10,000,000
  • 5. Just Mercy $10,000,000
  • 6. Little Women $7,650,000
  • 7. Underwater $7,003,000
  • 8. Frozen 2 $5,761,000
  • 9. Knives Out $5,725,000
  • 10. Spies in Disuise $5,108,000

Silence of the Lambs Sequel Series Headed to CBS

A new crime drama, Clarice, is now set at CBS. The show is based on the famous Thomas Harris book character, Clarice Starling, and will take place after the events in Harris' The Silence Of the Lambs, acting as a sequel story. Harris, notably, wrote a sequel to Silence, called Hannibal, which was turned into a movie in 2001. In the film, Anthony Hopkins reprised his role as Dr. Hannibal Lecter while Julianne Moore took over as Clarice, from Jodie Foster who won an Oscar for the role in Silence. CBS's Clarice will not be based on Hannibal (the book) and -- per Deadline -- will be "set in 1993, a year after the events of The Silence of the Lambs. The series is a deep dive into the untold personal story of Clarice Starling, as she returns to the field to pursue serial murderers and sexual predators while navigating the high stakes political world of Washington, D.C." [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=the-15-best-horror-tv-shows-of-the-last-10-years&captions=true"] Clarice will be written and executive produced by Alex Kurtzman (Fringe, Sleepy Hollow, Star Trek) and Jenny Lumet (2017's The Mummy). “After more than 20 years of silence, we’re privileged to give voice to one of America’s most enduring heroes – Clarice Starling,” said Kurtzman and Lumet. “Clarice’s bravery and complexity have always lit the way, even as her personal story remained in the dark. But hers is the very story we need today: her struggle, her resilience, her victory. Her time is now, and always.” This news comes a soft blow to fans of NBC's Hannibal, who've been hoping the series might return and do a Silence of the Lambs-based fourth season. Previously, Hannibal showrunner Bryan Fuller was never able to adapt Silence, or use the character of Clarice Starling, because he only had the rights to the Harris novels Red Dragon, Hannibal, and Hannibal Rising (all of which were adapted for the show). MGM, who are producing Clarice for CBS, owns the rights to The Silence of the Lambs so that's why this show is going forward with Clarice as its linchpin, and in a procedural type environment (CBS' bread and butter), telling a different post-Lecter story. Side note: Right around the time that NBC ordered Hannibal, MGM and Lifetime tried to develop a Silence of the Lambs prequel series based on Clarice. We're bringing this up because it's unlikely Clarice will be able to use the character of Hannibal Lecter because he was introduced in a different book. Same goes for the Jack Crawford character. Which is why the Silence-based show ideas are based on Clarice's life before or after Lecter. The Witcher’s Fight Scenes Were Choreographed By Game of Thrones’ Night King

One of the first big fights you see on Netflix's The Witcher happens between Henry Cavill's Geralt and Emma Appleton's Renfri, and that clash was sorted and choreographed by Wolfgang Stegemann, who Cavill had worked with on Mission Impossible: Fallout. But Stegemann wasn't the full-time Witcher series stunt coordinator. No, that was Vladimir Furdik - aka Game of Thrones' Night King! Netflix's Behind the Scenes podcast revealed how Furdik envisioned Geralt as a fighter as well as how he constructed the actual first confrontation on the series: Geralt's slaying of the Kikimora. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=netflixs-the-witcher-cast-vs-video-game-characters&captions=true"] Though the Kikimora battle was never described in the Andrzej Sapkowski Witcher story "The Lesser Evil," which is what the premiere episode adapts, showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich thought "What's a better way to introduce [Geralt] than having him killing a monster when you first find him?" "In the books we actually never see him kill the Kikimora," she explained to host Brandon Jenkins. "He actually arrives in Blaviken with the Kikimora's head on his donkey. So we never get to see him kill it." "We spent almost one month on this fight," Furdik said. "I thought that [Geralt] should be fighter who can already predict, three seconds ahead, when he's going to kill someone else. When he fights somebody he can already predict what they're doing. So his fight should look like very comfortable, kind of like ballet." In his gym, Furdik prepared for the fight, taking into consideration that "the Kikimora is three meters tall and she has eight legs." Furdik then constructed massive Kikimora legs from long plastic pips and made a homemade adversary. "I brought in six people," he said, "and put them on the table." Giving the legs to the guys on the table, Furdik "just stayed under the legs and and started to build the fight." After running through the fight over and over at a slowed down pace, all the moves were taught to Cavill, who never used a stunt double, or a body double of any kind, on The Witcher. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/12/23/the-witcher-henry-cavill-breaks-down-geralts-fight-with-renfri"] Hissrich has revealed that The Witcher: Season 2 will land in 2021 and be much more linear in its storytelling. NBC Orders Comedy Based On the Life of The Rock

During NBC Universal's presentation at the TCA winter press tour, it was announced that NBC has ordered up a new series called Young Rock, centered on the "formative years" of WWE Superstar and global box office champ Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. This 11-episode single-cam comedy is being produced by Nahnatchka Khan (Fresh Off the Boat, Don't Trust the B) and Johnson himself. Johnson will appear in every episode, but the search is on for a young actor to portray the childhood version of him. The pilot was co-written by Khan and Jeff Chiang (Don't Trust the B, American Dad!). "I have talked about this wild and unpredictable and unbelievable childhood that I had," Johnson said, via video, to the reporters on hand. "I’ve told many many stories, many of them unbelievable, but all of them true. You'll find Young Rock wreaking havoc in the streets of Hawaii. Getting arrested doing a lot of things I shouldn't do. We were evicted off the island and moved, to all places, Nashville, Tennessee," he shared. "Imagine me being in downtown Nashville, listening to country music at 15 years-old, buying my first car from a crackhead for $70. We go into my high school years as Young Rock, and my role as a University of Miami football star, until I got beaten out of my position by a young man named Warren Sapp, who went on to become one of the greatest defensive tackles of all time." You can see The Rock himself make the announcement on Twitter too, calling the show his “Forrest Gump” years ... The series will be executive produced by Nahnatchka Khan, Dwayne Johnson, Jeff Chiang, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, Brian Gewirtz and Jennifer Carreras. The show will be produced by Universal Television, Seven Bucks Productions and Fierce Baby Productions. Morbius: Fans Excited Over Leaked Image of Transformed Jared Leto

A photo leaked Saturday from Sony's upcoming Spider-Man rogues' gallery film Morbius, starring Jared Leto. But unlike the set photo Leto himself posted from last March, this glimpse showed us the actor fully done up as Marvel Comics' Living Vampire - and fan reaction seems to be leaning solidly toward the positive. Some fan responses have been bowled over by the "killer" picture, which has sold them on a movie that they weren't even all that excited about up until this point. Other are cautiously optimistic, commenting that while the image looks good and comic-accurate, we should all wait for the trailer to see how the character looks while moving. Check out the leaked image below in a sampling of some of the responses from fans around the web: And of course, there are already fans chomping at the bit for a Venom and Morbius face-off: Based on the comic book character of the same name, Morbius -- starring Leto, Adria Arjona, and Matt Smith -- follows Dr. Michael Morbius, a respected biochemist suffering from a rare and fatal blood disease. Desperate for a cure, Morbius performs dangerous experiments on himself using vampire bat DNA and inadvertently transforms into a "living vampire." Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok: Gameplay, Release Date, Story Location, and More

Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok is reportedly the next mainline Assassin’s Creed game, if recent leaks are to be believed. Thanks to alleged Amazon and GameStop item listings, we can surmise a few things about the next installment in the long-running franchise. What’s next for Ubisoft’s biggest franchise? Read on below to find out what we know, and what our best guesses are. If you want to stay completely spoiler-free on certain (unconfirmed) story details, skip past the appropriate sections.

Keep in mind though that Ubisoft has yet to confirm any such information, so take everything with one seriously large grain of salt.

Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok Release Date

Ubisoft hasn’t confirmed AC Ragnarok’s existence yet, much less a release date. That said, like many big-budget video games of its kind, it’s likely to release somewhere between October and early December to line up with the holiday season. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey released on October 5, 2018, while its predecessor Assassin’s Creed Origins released on October 27, 2017. Ubisoft likes to get things out a little ahead of the usual November deluge (where the likes of Call of Duty and Battlefield usually reign), so don’t be shocked if we see preview coverage sometime around E3 2020 and then a strong leadup to mid-October.

[widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=a-history-of-assassins-creed-leaks&captions=true"]

What systems is Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok on?

According to the leaked info, Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok will be on PS4, Xbox One, PC, and then also the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Ubisoft has not confirmed any such details.

When does Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok take place?

(Possible spoilers follow)

Judging from the leaks, Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok will take place in the Viking era. According to leaked information shared on Reddit, AC Ragnarok will start in or around 845 CE, during the Viking-led siege of Paris.

The period between 800 CE and about 900 CE were heavily characterized by these Viking incursions. According to the leaked info, the meat of the game will start during 863 CE with a character named Jora, who can be either male or female.

As is customary for Assassin’s Creed games, we’ll meet a number of broadly defined historical figures. According to the leak, the player character will meet King of Wessex Alfred, Rollo, the first ruler of Normandy, and Charles the Fat, the emperor of the Carolingian Empire.

[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2016/11/09/assassins-creed-exploring-the-assassin-templar-conflict"]

What will Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok gameplay be like?

Ubisoft hasn’t shown any official gameplay as of yet, and they’ve certainly not confirmed anything from the leaked information. That said, if any of the leaked info is to be believed, there could be a significant number of updates. You can read the full list of leaked (and unconfirmed) gameplay info here, but we’ve whittled it down to what looks to be the most important stuff.
  • Up to 4-player drop-in/drop-out co-op much like Ghost Recon Wildlands.

  • New RPG mechanics introduce a new class system and skill tree changes based on that choice. You’ll be able to change your character class.

  • More weapon types, and weapons can be upgraded with runes, special abilities for certain groups of weapons. Durability will play a role, too.

  • Rather than adrenaline, players can activate a berserker mode that also activates rune powers based on elemental types - lightning, fire, frost.

  • Sailing is back, with more focus on exploration than combat.

  • The hidden blade returns and can be upgraded for one-hit kills.

  • Stealth is receiving some upgrades, like allowing a player to hide in mud, snow, crouching in bushes, and other hiding options. Players can also hide themselves in crowds of people so long as their clothing doesn’t stick out.

  • Reputation system based on who, what, and where you conquest.

  • Conquest battles return.

  • Battles between independent kingdoms (as in you don’t control them yet) may occur naturally.

  • Players can organize large-scale raids on forts and large cities, or just go it alone.

  • Difficulty has been overhauled. Rather than being about enemy health, difficulty will determine your own health, parry times, and enemy reaction times.

  • Leveling is also getting an overhaul, allowing players to improve their individual skillsets and gain experience in them. The leaked info describes it being similar to The Elder Scross V: Skyrim. This also means that regions being locked by level number is gone.

  • As for the map, the leaked info says it comprises most or all of northern Europe, including the cites of York, London, Paris, and Kiev.

It’s worth reiterating that none of this information has been confirmed by Ubisoft, so take it all with a huge grain of salt. While past Assassin’s Creed leaks have historically been mostly on the money, that doesn’t mean that any one of these supposed details is really in the game.

[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/04/09/are-you-ready-for-assassins-creed-vikings-unlocked-389"]

Will Layla and Abstergo return?

We don’t know anything about the modern-day portion of Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok quite yet. Odds are it will continue to focus on the character of Layla and her journey with the brotherhood. Interested in more juicy historical details and possible connections? Read how Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok could connect the franchise back to the first Assassin’s Creed game.

Where to get the Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok Special Edition

No information on a special edition or collector’s edition for Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok has been publicly announced, although considering Ubisoft always has at least one special edition for each game, it’s a safe bet they’ll do it again. Historically, the pricier bundles come with a small statue, while the slightly-higher-than-$60 bundles come with extra digital content. We’ll update this section when we know more. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2017/05/11/a-history-of-assassins-creed-leaks"]

Where can I pre-order Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok?

Since the game hasn’t been officially announced, there’s no real way to pre-order it quite yet. Amazon and GameStop were the sources of some of this leaked information, though, so it’s likely the game will appear there and other major retailers. We’ll be updating this section and creating pre-order guides when we know more. If any of this information on Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok proves true, what are you most excited for? Do you think Ragnarok will be a meaningful evolution of the Assassin’s Creed franchise or will it be the same old sneaky stabbing and swordfighting business as usual? Let us know in the comments below. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Joseph Knoop is a writer/producer for IGN.
