The Complex Is a New Interactive Sci-Fi Movie That Tracks Your Decisions
Wales Interactive, the publisher behind live-action video games such as Late Shift, has announced The Complex, its latest project in the realms of interactive live-action movies.
The Complex, which Wales Interactive describes as “the very first live-action interactive sci-fi film”, tells the story of the aftermath of a bio-weapon attack in London. The choose-your-own-adventure style film focuses on Dr. Amy Tenant, a nano-scientist who, along with a fellow scientist, has been locked in a lab that contains a perilous secret.
Tenant’s journey features multi-option storytelling choices that branch out to 8 different endings, akin to Netflix's interactive Black Mirror episode Bandersnatch. But within those choices is a detailed real-time relationship status and personality trait tracking, which assesses your decisions and influences how the story plays out.
[widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=the-25-best-sci-fi-movies&captions=true"]
Each interaction with characters you encounter will weaken or strengthen your bond with them, depending on your approach, and their status with you will affect the outcome of certain scenes. Your decisions also factor into your overall personality score, which is revealed at the end of the story. While The Complex looks like a classic FMV game or interactive movie due to its live action nature, it appears that beneath the surface is a more game-like system akin to that powering Life Is Strange 2 or the Telltale games.
The Complex It is written by Lynn Renee Maxcy, who is also part of the writing team for Hulu's The Handmaid’s Tale, is directed by Paul Raschid, and stars Bad Blood’s Michelle Mylett, Game of Thrones’ Kate Dickie, and Twitch streamer LeahViathan. It has been produced in partnership with Red and Black Films, Good Gate Media, Little Jade Productions, Great Point Media, and Fields Park.
Talking of streaming, the film also features a pause system when choices are presented, allowing streamers to get audiences involved in making decisions.
Releasing on March 31, The Complex will be available on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. If you can’t wait, you can get a (unfortunately not interactive) rush right now with the best sci-fi movies of all time.

Sony Closes First-Party PlayStation Studio
PlayStation has decided to close Manchester VR, its first-party studio in the UK that was working on an unannounced PlayStation VR project.
As reported by GamesIndustry.biz, PlayStation made this decision "to close it as part of our efforts to improve efficiency and operational effectiveness."
Manchester VR was formed in 2015 to specifically work on VR games. It never released a game, and has now become the third UK studio PlayStation has closed in the PS4 generation.
[widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=best-vr-game-nominees&captions=true"]
In 2016, PlayStation closed MotorStorm and Driveclub's Evolution Studio and, in 2017, it shut down Killzone: Mercenary and RIGS: Mechanized Combat League's Guerrilla Cambridge.
PlayStation still has two studios operating in the UK, Dreams developer Media Molecule and the team behind Blood & Truth, London Studio.
Even though it has shut down this VR-focused studio, PlayStation remains committed to PSVR, and it already confirmed that it will be backward compatible for the PlayStation 5.

Beat Saber, which is available on PSVR, won our Best VR Game of 2019, and beat out other PSVR titles as Blood and Truth, Ghost Giant, and Trover Saves The Universe.

New Study Shows Lake on Mars Held Salty, Mineral-Filled Water
A new study has revealed that Mars' Gale Crater, home to NASA's Curiosity Rover, once held salty, mineral-filled water. While the Martian lake dried up long ago, scientist have seemingly confirmed that the water that filled the lake was not only mineral-filled, but was also at a comfortable pH level.
While the study published in Nature Communications might not sound like much, this discovery continues to support the popular hypothesis that life previously existed on Mars.
[widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=the-25-best-sci-fi-movies&captions=true"]
The Curiosity Rover has been exploring the Gale Crater for some time now and has provided a wealth of information to NASA scientists. While life on Mars is far from confirmed, this discovery certainly continues to give life to this theory.
In 2017, scientists were able to confirm signs of liquid water on the Red Planet. However, due to the cold atmosphere and freezing temperatures of Mars, the planet can no longer support permanent or significant amounts of liquid for long periods of time.
[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2018/07/25/did-scientists-find-liquid-water-on-mars"]
Thanks to the MAVEN satellite, which orbits Mars, scientists also believe that the Red Planet once had a warm, wet, and hospitable atmosphere. Unfortunately, this is no longer the case due to a powerful solar wind which transformed Mars' atmosphere to a cold and potentially unhabitable one.
While NASA scientists still have a lot to learn about Mars, they are hopeful that this discovery will continue to be a step forward.
In July 2020, NASA is planning to launch a new Mars rover which will be able to "core samples of Martian rocks and soil," and will hopefully lead to new discoveries.
Until scientists can learn more about Mars, we will have to rely on films like The Martian to propel our curiosity about the Red Planet.
