PlayStation 5 Manufacturing Costs Reportedly at ‘Around $450 Per Unit’
Scarce components have caused the manufacturing costs of the PlayStation 5 to rise to around $450 per unit, "forcing a difficult price-setting decision in its battle with Microsoft."
As reported by Bloomberg, these high costs have caused Sony to take a "wait-and-see approach with PS5's price," which is different from past console launches as Sony usually sets the price the February of the release year, with mass production starting in spring.
For comparison, the PlayStation 4 retailed for $399 USD and was estimated by IHS Markit to cost $381 USD to manufacture. If all things were similar with the PlayStation 5, Sony would have to have the PS5's price "be at least $470" to reach similar gross margin.
[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/02/07/next-gen-console-watch-how-powerful-ps5-xbox-series-x-may-be"]
The biggest problem Sony is facing in regards to the PlayStation 5 is a "reliable supply of DRAM and NAND flash memory." One of the main reasons for the scarcity is that these parts are also in high-demand for smartphone makers.
It's not unusual for consoles to be sold at or near a loss, as the games themselves and subscription services more than make up for it. However, sources claim that Sony is split on whether it should sell the console at a loss, if necessary, to match the Xbox Series X or find a way to make the PS5 profitable as it is.
While the price may not be set, most of the PS5's components have been locked down, including the cooling system which is "unusually expensive at a few dollars per unit." Most cooling units for consoles cost less than a dollar, but "Sony opted to lavish more on making sure heat dissipation from the powerful chips housed inside the console isn’t an issue."
[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/02/01/next-gen-console-watch-ps5-and-xbox-series-x-news-leaks-analysis"]
Sony has also said that the ongoing coronavirus outbreak has had no impact on PS5 production, unlike the Animal Crossing Nintendo Switch.
Bloomberg's report also claims that Sony is planning on releasing a new version of PlayStation VR, which will go on sale at some point after the launch of the PlayStation 5 this Holiday season.
Sony also believes that this console transition will be a more gradual one than previous generations. This is also due to the fact that many PlayStation 5 games will be available on the PlayStation 4.

Microsoft may very well wait until E3 to reveal the pricing of the Xbox Series X, so it may be a while, if Sony chooses to continue waiting, until pricing is known from the next PlayStation. Sony previously announced that it will once again not be attending E3. Sony's patient approach also extends to its plans on how it will fully reveal the PlayStation 5, as all we've seen so far is its logo, whereas Microsoft surprised the gaming world by showing off the Xbox Series X hardware at the Game Awards 2019. Auctioned Nintendo PlayStation Current Bid Curently at $350,000
UPDATE (2/14/20) - Bids for the Nintendo PlayStation prototype console are now up to $350,000 USD with 20 days left on the auction.
Original story follows.
[poilib element="accentDivider"]
One of the rarest pieces of gaming history, the Nintendo PlayStation, is currently up for auction and has become the most expensive item in gaming history.
As the auction continues, bids for the Nintendo PlayStation exceeded $105,000 earlier today, officially making it the most expensive gaming item to date, according to Video Game History Foundation's Kelsey Lewin.
[widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=could-this-be-the-snes-playstation-prototype"]
At the time of writing, bids for the Nintendo PlayStation have reached $310,000 with a few weeks left in the auction.
The prototype was designed to play NES cartridges and CD games but never came to fruition after Nintendo publicly walked away from its 'unofficially official' deal with Sony at the 1991 Consumer Electronics Show.
Owner Terry Diebold announced last year that he would auction off the prototype this February, sharing that he has turned down million-dollar offers for the system over the years.
Diebold told Kotaku that he has decided to part with one of gaming's rarest treasures because it has become quite expensive to continually showcase the Nintendo PlayStation over the years.
[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2015/07/14/beyond-the-nintendo-playstation-that-couldve-been"]
"I can’t keep losing money. I’ve put a lot of work into this by traveling with it and we have made nothing on it,” Diebold told Kotaku via email. “Every trip that we… have taken with it has cost us money out of pocket.”
With three weeks left in the auction, the prototype will likely only continue to increase in value — the only question is, how much?
What would you be willing to pay for the Nintendo PlayStation? Let us know in the comments below.

The Batman: Robert Pattinson’s Batsuit Draws Daredevil Comparisons
Production has officially begun on The Batman and director Matt Reeves was in a very sharing mood on Twitter today. He uploaded a video on Vimeo showcasing Robert Pattinson in the iconic Batman Batsuit. The video clip was set to a very moody piece of music and the lighting that surrounded Pattinson bathed him and the suit in a bold red color. You can see the video below:
[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/02/13/the-batman-camera-test"]
Twitter instantly reacted to the first look, by sharing their thoughts on the suit, the color choice, the Batarang logo, Pattinson's remarkable jawline, and what each detail could be telling us about the film -- we have our own Batsuit breakdown here. Some Twitter users thought the red lighting made Batman look like Marvel's Daredevil, while other Twitter users thought the suit style could signify the film pulling from the Batman: Year One comicbook storyline.
Here are some of the best reactions to the suit reveal:
What do you think of the suit? How does it stack up to previous iterations of Batman in your eyes? Let us know in the comments!
The Batman will soar into theaters on June 25, 2021. Pattinson will be joined by Colin Farrell, John Tuturro, Andy Serkis, Zoe Kravitz, Paul Dano and Jeffrey Wright.

Final Fantasy VII Remake is less than two months away, and Square Enix revealed a handful on new screenshots this morning showcasing Tifa's moves, side quests, and, most importantly, some adorable and oddly proportioned summons. Naturally, fans immediately went to work and began commenting on Chocobo Chick and Carbuncle's crazy designs, creating memes at the speed of light.
The Chocobo Chick is adorable and plump, shown sitting on its little tush with its Super Saiyan-like yellow hairdo sticking up even taller than Cloud's. Carbuncle's design was met with a more divided reception because, while the creature is cute, its forehead is more of a sevenhead, and a big ruby is just plopped right on there. A third summon, Cactuar, was shown off, but it looks exactly like anyone expected a Cactaur to look like in a Final Fantasy game.

Fans React to Final Fantasy 7 Remake's Chocobo Chick
Reactions to Chocobo Chick where generally positive, but fans poked fun at its big ol' head and spiky yellow hair reminiscent of Goku as a Super Saiyan, Cloud Strife himself, and even a certain Food Network star.

While some fans found Carbuncle's Garfield-esque look adorable, several were disappointed it wasn't more akin to its design from Final Fantasy XV, where its gem was turned into a small red horn.

The Batman: First Look at Robert Pattinson in Batsuit
Director Matt Reeves has given us our first look at Robert Pattinson in the batsuit for the upcoming The Batman, via a screentest video.
The director of the new take on the dark knight posted a camera test to Vimeo, revealing a deeply shadowed Pattinson in costume as Batman, include shots of his bat symbol, as well as the actor in the cowl. Watch the camera test below.
[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/02/13/the-batman-camera-test"]
While the footage itself is dark, moody, and only gives us a brief glimpse of this new take on Batman, we do get a close-up look of his chest emblem.
Take a look at the new bat symbol and Pattinson in the cowl below:

Reeves has been using social media to trickle out information about the upcoming film, which sees Pattinson don the cowl following Ben Affleck's take on Batman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League. Pattinson has discussed how he's already prepared for backlash to his portrayal of Batman.
In addition to sharing a The Batman set photo from the first day of filming, Reeves has revealed Colin Farrell will be playing The Penguin, John Tuturro is set to play Carmine Falcone, Andy Serkis taking on the mantle of Alfred, and more.
[widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=the-batman-cast-every-actor-and-character&captions=true"]
We know Zoe Kravitz will be in the film as Catwoman, as well as that Paul Dano will play The Riddler and Westworld actor Jeffrey Wright has been cast as Commissioner Gordon.
Late last year, Robert Pattinson described suiting up as Batman for the first time, later going on to describe the Batsuit as "pretty cool," without giving too much away about the design.
The Batman is set to hit theaters on June 25, 2021.

Emilio Estevez is officially returning as Coach Gordon Bombay in the 10-episode Disney+ series, The Mighty Ducks.
Estevez, who will also serve as executive producer on The Mighty Ducks, will join series regulars Lauren Graham and Brady Noon on the series that is set to premiere later this year.
Disney+'s Twitter shared a couple images from the production of The Mighty Ducks, which you can see below, of Estevez and some of the other cast members on the ice.
[widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=emilio-estevez-returns-for-disneys-the-mighty-ducks&captions=true"]
“Once a Duck, always a Duck!,” said Emilio Estevez, “and after 25 years, I am delighted to lace up my skates, put on Coach Bombay's jacket and return to play the iconic character for this new chapter in ‘The Mighty Ducks’ franchise. Likewise, I am thrilled to return to my old stomping grounds with my friends at Disney and Steve Brill, the original creator of the franchise, to join them on their exciting new platform, Disney+.”
The Mighty Ducks takes place in present-day Minnesota and "the Mighty Ducks have evolved from scrappy underdogs to an ultra-competitive, powerhouse youth hockey team. After 12-year-old Evan (Noon) is unceremoniously cut from the Ducks, he and his mom Alex (Graham) set out to build their own ragtag team of misfits to challenge the cutthroat, win-at-all-costs culture of competitive youth sports. With the help of Gordon Bombay (Estevez), they discover the joys of playing just for the love of the game."

Estevez made his acting debut in Tim Hunter's Tex and went on to star in such films as The Breakfast Club and St. Elmo's Fire.
The Mighty Ducks franchise began with the 1992 classic of the same name and saw two sequels - 1994's D2: The Mighty Ducks and 1996's D3: The Mighty Ducks.
