Westworld: Game of Thrones Creators to Cameo in Season 3

Ahead of Westworld's long-awaited return to HBO, on March 15, it's being reported that Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will make an appearance in Season 3. According to The Wrap, the duo, who were scheduled to helm a new Star Wars trilogy until a few months back, will make a cameo in Westworld's new season, in the second episode - titled “The Absence of Field,” airing March 29. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=midseason-tv-2020-34-shows-we-cant-wait-to-watch&captions=true"] Weiss and Benioff will play technicians at Delos, the corporation that bought out Dr. Ford and Weber's Argos Initiative during the early days of Westworld and expanded the operation into several theme parks that secretly scan the brains of guests (via hats) to steal their information. Delos has also been working for year, in secret, to uncover a method of immortality by successfully transferring a human mind into the body of a Host, allowing that person to live on after death. The series, from Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, also recently released new character posters, along with some hidden "alternate" trailers (which fans discovered). A Quiet Place: Part II Social Media Reactions Heap Praise on the Scary Sequel

Members of the film press were able to catch an advance screening of A Quiet Place: Part II and the early reactions to hit social media hail the sequel as a worthy and terrifying successor to John Krasinski's hit 2018 original. Most critics address the unrelenting tension and suspense while others praise the soundscape and the performances of new-to-the-series Cillian Murphy and the returning Millicent Simmonds. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/03/06/a-quiet-place-part-ii-the-stranger-clip"] Here's a quick roundup of the first reactions to A Quiet Place: Part II. [poilib element="accentDivider"] IGN's Executive Editor of Movies, Jim Vejvoda, writes that A Quiet Place: Part II "can’t quite recapture all the thrilling magic that made the original such a beloved sleeper sensation" but that it overcomes sequel odds "thanks to its focus on character and the moving performances of its core cast and new addition Cillian Murphy." Screen Shot 2020-03-07 at 8 IndieWire's Deputy Editor of Film, Kagte Erbland, insists that crunchy snacks be banned, so that the silent chills can fully resonate. Erik Davis, Managing Editor at Fandango, remarks that some sequences in the film are a "masterclass in suspense." Comicbook.com's Chris Killian claims the sequel is "riveting from top to bottom." Steven Weintraub, Editor-in-Chief for Collider, is here making an early plea for a Part III! Uproxx's Senior Entertainment Writer, Mike Ryan, lauds the addition of Cillian Murphy while Daily Dead's Heather Wixson and horror critic Meagan Navarro both celebrate Millicent Simmonds' great performance. Rotten Tomatoes' EIC, Joel Meares, goes so far as to call Millicent Simmonds his "new Ripley." CinemaBlend's Managing Director, Sean O'Connell, asserts that Krasinski has "Spielberg-level chops." James Wan Developing Universal Monster Movie with Supernatural Writer

James Wan is set to produce a Universal Pictures monster movie with Supernatural writer Robbie Thompson. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news, citing that Wan will produce the movie using a script written by Thompson, who's not just a writer for CW's Supernatural, but also a long time executive producer on the show. The movie is currently untitled, but it will be a horror thriller. The Hollywood Reporter's sources say that the movie will be a modern monster movie with a story that takes cues from Universal's classic monster film legacy. "With shades of Disturbia, the story will focus on a group of teens who discover that a neighbor is building a monster in his basement," The Hollywood Reporter said in their story. "Spoiler: the monster gets loose." [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=the-best-movies-of-the-decade-2010-2019&captions=true"] A movie about someone building a monster sounds very reminiscent of Universal's classic Frankenstein, but until more information about the movie is known, the true nature of this film is anybody's guess. Wan is producing the movie under the roof of his Atomic Monster production company, but he will not direct the monster horror thriller. The director of the film is not currently known. This news comes at a time where Universal's classic monsters are already in the spotlight, with The Invisible Man currently in theaters. We thought it was a great movie, giving The Invisible Man an 8 out of 10. This new project from Wan and Thompson will likely end up as a standalone monster movie, with Universal's Dark Universe being reconfigured for the time being following 2017's Tom Cruise-led The Mummy, which was a commercial disappointment. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2017/06/05/13-essential-facts-about-dark-universe-universals-shared-monster-universe"] Wan is currently busy at work on his upcoming R-rated Mortal Kombat movie reboot that will be released in theaters next year. While not much is known about the movie, we do know some of the actors cast in the Mortal Kombat movie reboot. This movie wrapped filming in December last year and is expected to be released on January 1, 2021. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Wesley LeBlanc is a freelance news writer and guide maker for IGN. Thor 4: Christian Bale to Play the Villain in Love & Thunder

Christian Bale is set to play the villain in the fourth Thor film subtitled Love and Thunder. ET Online talked to co-star Tessa Thompson who plays Valkyrie and the news that the rumors of Bale joining the cast are true. "Christian Bale is going to play our villain, which is going to be fantastic," said Thompson "I've read the script. I can't tell you much. Lots of exciting text messages exchanged between Natalie and I. We're going to have fun. Taika is writing [and] directing. Some familiar faces. Some new people coming into the mix." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/01/17/lucasfilm-reportedly-wants-taika-waititi-to-direct-new-star-wars"] Thompson didn't offer up any info on which character Bale would be playing but did say that Valkyrie will be in her full role as King of Asgard for the film. "She's king," Thompson explained. "If she can't find her queen, she'll just be king and queen at the same time." Nolan is a storied actor who's perhaps best known for his take on Batman during the Nolan trilogy. Other fans will know him as Patrick Bateman from American Psycho or maybe even as the voice of Howl in the English version of Howl's Moving Castle, which you can watch on Netflix next month. He was most recently co-starring in the Academy Award-nominated film Ford v Ferarri. We have some thoughts on who Bale could be playing in Love and Thunder the slideshow below. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=thor-love-and-thunder-6-characters-christian-bale-could-play&captions=true"]

This next Thor installment is set to be a bit different from Ragnarok and director and writer Taika Watiti has also said it will be even crazier. The film will start shooting this summer and is slated for release on November 5, 2021.

Fortnite to Fix Controversial Legacy Controls

Fortnite Legacy Controls have been a hot-button topic among the competitive battle royale community since the launch of Chapter 2 last year, as some say it offers a distinct advantage to controller players over those using a keyboard and mouse. Epic has decided to step in and starting next week, Legacy Controls, which offer aim assist to controller players, will be removed from the game completely. Epic announced on Twitter and the in-game news feed that it will officially remove its aim assisting Legacy Controls on March 13. Players who are still using Legacy Controls at the cutoff date will have all of their sensitivities reset to the new default settings. To avoid having your settings wiped, Epic has added a "Copy from Legacy" option which will allow players to save their current sensitivities once Legacy Controls are turned off for good. To do this, simply head into the in-game setting menu and navigate to the "Controller Options" tab. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/02/20/fortnite-chapter-2-season-2-top-secret-launch-trailer"] Last year, a "hack" was discovered that allowed controller players to use the Legacy Controls to track players through walls, smoke, and tall grass. Since then, the PC community has been constantly asking Epic to nerf the aim assist controls and level the playing field. With the successful launch of Chapter 2: Season 2, it seems Epic is finally ready to listen. SXSW Canceled Due to Coronavirus Concerns

The city of Austin, Texas has canceled SXSW (south by southwest) the annual music and arts festival that in recent years has featured more video game and entertainment content. The organizers of SXSW announced the news in a blog saying that this is the first time in 34 years of the event that it has been canceled. The organizers of SXSW are clearly stating that the decision was from the city of Austin and not the organizers themselves. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=all-the-big-games-coming-in-2020&captions=true"] “As recently as Wednesday, Austin Public Health stated that ‘there’s no evidence that closing SXSW or any other gatherings will make the community safer,’ However, this situation evolved rapidly, and we honor and respect the City of Austin’s decision.” SXSW is the latest event to cancel or postpone over coronavirus concerns. Check out a full list of events impacted, postponed, or canceled due to coronavirus concerns. Read SXSW's full statement below:
The City of Austin has cancelled the March dates for SXSW and SXSW EDU. SXSW will faithfully follow the City’s directions. We are devastated to share this news with you. “The show must go on” is in our DNA, and this is the first time in 34 years that the March event will not take place. We are now working through the ramifications of this unprecedented situation. As recently as Wednesday, Austin Public Health stated that “there’s no evidence that closing SXSW or any other gatherings will make the community safer.” However, this situation evolved rapidly, and we honor and respect the City of Austin’s decision. We are committed to do our part to help protect our staff, attendees, and fellow Austinites. We are exploring options to reschedule the event and are working to provide a virtual SXSW online experience as soon as possible for 2020 participants, starting with SXSW EDU. For our registrants, clients, and participants we will be in touch as soon as possible and will publish an FAQ. We understand the gravity of the situation for all the creatives who utilize SXSW to accelerate their careers; for the global businesses; and for Austin and the hundreds of small businesses – venues, theatres, vendors, production companies, service industry staff, and other partners that rely so heavily on the increased business that SXSW attracts. We will continue to work hard to bring you the unique events you love. Though it’s true that our March 2020 event will no longer take place in the way that we intended, we continue to strive toward our purpose – helping creative people achieve their goals.

The streaming giant hasn't revealed what metrics it's using to consider one of its shows popular. During an investor earnings call with top Netflix executives, we learned that Season 1 of The Witcher was viewed by 76 million member households in the first four weeks of its release. According to Netflix, a view counts as a subscriber watching at least two minutes of a given movie or TV show. We know that's not much to go on, but when you're a company spending upwards of $17 billion in 2020 with over 150 million subscribers worldwide, apparently no one's going to tell them, "give us the real numbers, Netflix!"
