Christopher Nolan Writes Op-Ed About the Importance of Saving Movie Theaters

Christopher Nolan, director of The Dark Knight and Dunkirk, and a fervent advocate of the movie theater-going experience, has penned a piece for The Washington Post, calling for government, studio, and societal support of movie theaters as crowd-heavy businesses both big and small go dark during the coronavirus crisis. In an op-ed titled "Movie theaters are a vital part of American social life. They will need our help," Nolan writes “When people think about movies, their minds first go to the stars, the studios, the glamour. But the movie business is about everybody: the people working the concession stands, running the equipment, taking tickets, booking movies, selling advertising and cleaning bathrooms in local theaters.” [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/12/19/tenet-official-trailer"] In this time of "unprecedented challenge and uncertainty," Nolan calls on Congress, when considering monetary aid sent out to support shuttered businesses, to see "our community for what it really is: a vital part of social life, providing jobs for many and entertainment for all. These are places of joyful mingling where workers serve up stories and treats to the crowds that come to enjoy an evening out with friends and family. As a filmmaker, my work can never be complete without those workers and the audiences they welcome." Nolan concludes with “When this crisis passes, the need for collective human engagement, the need to live and love and laugh and cry together, will be more powerful than ever. We need what movies can offer us. Maybe, like me, you thought you were going to the movies for surround sound, or Goobers, or soda and popcorn, or movie stars. But we weren’t. We were there for each other." [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=tenet-cast&captions=true"] Unlike the many Spring movies that have been delayed due to COVID-19, Nolan's Tenet, starring John David Washington and Robert Pattinson, is still set to come out on July 17. For more on Tenet, be sure to read our thorough breakdown of everything in the as-yet-unreleased trailer. You Have to See These Hilarious WrestleMania 36 Shirts

With WWE moving WrestleMania 36 from Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida to the company's Performance Center in Orlando -- and the event being changed to a fan-less two-night PPV -- a couple of new shirts available at their online store are having a bit of fun with the unenviable situation. Two tees over at WWE Shop are taking a tongue-in-cheek approach to "event only exclusive" shirts WWE usually sells at major PPVs. Instead of the traditional "I Was There," these threads proudly display "I Wasn't There." Take a look... Screen Shot 2020-03-21 at 10.42.40 AM Screen Shot 2020-03-21 at 10.42.31 AM As you can see, WWE is trying to make the best of a brutal situation. Hopefully their mirth will pay off. Also, hopefully 'Mania 36 will still be pirate-themed. Check out how the matches for WrestleMania 36 will be divided between two nights. In other entertainment news, Paramount's The Lovebirds, starring Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani, is now bypassing theaters and heading to Netflix. Plus, Disney has released Pixar's Onward to on-demand and the movie is coming to Disney+ on April 3. Warner Bros' Birds of Prey is coming to on-demand on March 24 and Universal is releasing Trolls World Tour on-demand on April 10, the movie's original theatrical date. The company has already put The Invisible Man, Emma, and The Hunt on-demand. WrestleMania 36 is Now a Two-Night Event

This past week, WWE announced that, instead of cancelling or postponing WrestleMania 36 in Tampa, they were moving the annual mega-event to their own Performance Center in Orlando, with no fans in the stands. Now the event has changed even more, with WWE, a few days ago, releasing the news that WrestleMania 36 will take place over two nights - on April 4 and April 5. Per WWE, "WrestleMania, for the first time ever, will be held as a two-night event streaming on Saturday, April 4 and Sunday, April 5 at 7 pm ET on WWE Network and available on pay-per-view. The two-night pop culture extravaganza will be hosted by three-time Super Bowl Champion Rob Gronkowski." [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=every-delayed-movie-due-to-coronavirus-so-far&captions=true"] While this isn't the full WrestleMania 36 card, here's how the main matches are reportedly being broken down over the two nights: Sat, April 4

  • Drew McIntyre vs. WWE Champion Brock Lesnar
  • Charlotte Flair vs. WWE NXT Women's Champion Rhea Ripley
  • The Undertaker vs. AJ Styles
  • Kevin Owens vs. Seth Rollins

Sun, April 5

  • Roman Reigns vs. WWE Universal Champion Bill Goldberg
  • Shayna Baszler vs. RAW Women's Champion Becky Lynch
  • John Cena vs. "The Fiend" Bray Wyatt
  • Edge vs Randy Orton

Leading up to WrestleMania 36, encore presentations of historic WrestleMania events will air over the next three Sundays on ESPN and streaming via the ESPN App.

  • WrestleMania 30 (airs Sunday, March 22, 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT) – from April 6, 2014
  • WrestleMania 32 (airs Sunday, March 29, 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT) – from April 3, 2016
  • WrestleMania 35 (airs Sunday, April 5, 3 p.m. ET/ 12 p.m. PT) – from April 7, 2019

The Walking Dead: World Beyond Postponed

The latest coronavirus-related delay in the entertainment world comes to us from The Walking Dead universe, which already had to halt production on Fear the Walking Dead's sixth season. The Walking Dead's second spinoff, The Walking Dead: World Beyond, has now been pushed back to later this year, to a date yet to be determined. The Walking Dead: World Beyond has actually wrapped shooting, but still needs to complete post-production on a few more episodes and that process has been impacted by fears of spreading COVID-19. So, like FX's Fargo: Season 4, its April airdate is being changed. World Beyond was set to start on Sunday, April 12 at 10 PM ET right after the Season 10 finale of The Walking Dead. The first season (of this two-season limited series) consists of 10 episodes. World Beyond centers on a group of teens, who are the first generation to grow up in a zompocalypse, venturing out of their safe and walled community to find a missing scientist. It stars Alexa Mansour, Nicolas Cantu, Hal Cumpston, Aliyah Royale, Annet Mahendru, and Nico Tortorella. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/11/25/the-walking-dead-world-beyond-trailer"] For those "social distancing," here are 12 movies that are being released to VOD early. You can also check out all the movies, and productions, that have been delayed due to the outbreak. GameStop Decides To Close California Stores

GameStop stores will close in California where the governor of the state enacted a full lockdown policy, according to the video game retailer. The news arrives a day after GameStop told stores to remain open and should consider themselves “essential” businesses because of its supply of tech hardware like keyboards and webcams. GameStop confirmed to IGN that stores in California have been closed to comply with the state’s full lockdown mandate (as reported by Kotaku). The order from Gov. Gavin Newsom requires all of the state’s residents to stay at home except for essential activities such as grocery shopping, work, or travel. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=gamestop-in-the-news-timeline&captions=true"] One GameStop employee told IGN under conditions of anonymity that the order to close California stores came down this morning. GameStop did not comment on whether this order would expand to other states like New York which issued similar lockdown orders. The retailer was expected to remain open and told stores to continue operating as they should be considered essential businesses. In a statement to IGN yesterday, the company said that the company offers “a wide array of products and devices that are important to facilitate remote work, distance learning, and virtual connectivity.” This includes webcams and microphones, items that businesses like IGN do indeed require for remote work. But the order from California’s governor appears to tighten that classification to necessities like food and supplies. GameStop stores that remain open have implemented social distancing practices such as only allowing 10 customers in at a time, and canceling midnight launches for major game releases for the foreseeable future. Spider-Man Voice Actor Wants to Cheer Up Bored Kids Stuck at Home

If your children are bored at home, the voice of Peter B. Parker from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse will send them a quick message of encouragement to brighten their day. Jake Johnson, who voiced the version of Peter Parker who fought alongside Miles Morales for most of the movie, mentioned in an Instagram post how he had been asked by several parents to send encouraging messages to kids. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=new-movies-coming-to-vod-early&captions=true"] "Since the quarantine, a lot of parents have DM'd me saying they've been watching Spiderverse with their kids," Johnson said in. "So , here's my idea. If your child is home from school and wants a quick encouraging message from Peter B Parker, then send me an email with their name and I'll try and send over a short voice note." "If I don't get to you, I apologize," Johnson continued. "Email here if you wanna try this: peterbparkersayshi@gmail.com." Sony's Into the Spider-Verse was released in 2018 and its many iterations of Spider-Man quickly grew to be fan favorites, including Jake Johnson's Peter B. Parker. The entire arc of this Peter Parker focused on a down-in-the-dumps Spider-Man relearning what it means to be a hero and why it's important to be a hero, and now, your child could receive a personalized message from Spider-Man himself. Johnson's post has thousands of likes and, at the time of this writing, 2924 comments with parents thanking him for doing this and requests to hear back from some of Johnson's other famous characters, like Nick Miller from New Girl. Paramount Shifts The Lovebirds Release to Netflix

Paramount Pictures will no longer release The Lovebirds, starring Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani, as originally planned and has placed the film with Netflix instead. The Lovebirds was due out in theaters on April 3, but after theaters around the world have closed their doors in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the movie's studio, Paramount, pulled the movie from theaters. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it's not known at this time when The Lovebirds is set to debut on Netflix. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=new-movies-coming-to-vod-early&captions=true"] Paramount has sent its movies to Netflix before, namely 2018's Annihilation (internationally) and The Cloverfield Paradox, but in those instances, it wasn't due to an ongoing pandemic or theater closings. While The Lovebirds is unique in that it's heading to Netflix, it's not the first movie to see an early release to homes around the world as a result of the COVID-19 crisis. Paramount announced on Friday, March 20, that Sonic would be getting an early digital release on March 31. The studio has already pulled its theatrical releases for A Quiet Place II and Blue Story. [ignvideo width=610 height=374 url=https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/01/16/the-lovebirds-official-trailer-1] Disney is releasing Pixar's Onward on-demand tonight and the movie is coming to Disney+ on April 3. In a world void of COVID-19, Onward would likely have still been in theaters on April 3. Warner Bros' Birds of Prey is coming to on-demand on March 24 and Universal is releasing Trolls World Tour on-demand on April 10, the movie's original theatrical date. The company has already put The Invisible Man, Emma, and The Hunt on-demand. 12 New Movies Coming to On-Demand Early

With theater chains closing throughout the world, including AMC Theaters and Regal Cinemas here in the US, movie studios are not only delaying the releases of their next big films they're also shifting a slew of their latest and even some of their upcoming films to VOD services (video on demand) instead. These digital platforms include Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, Vudu, Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, among others. For some of the titles that were recently released in theaters, like The Invisible Man and Pixar's Onward, there is a premium-tier rental charge that can go as high as $19.99 USD. While there are many titles coming early to VOD in the coming weeks, here are the 12 biggest titles coming to streaming platforms. Read on or click through the slideshow below to see which early-release films made our list: [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=new-movies-coming-to-vod-early&captions=true"] [poilib element="accentDivider"]

Onward: March 20

tmp_qFl30f_82d77dd068e3140d_g_onward_03_18369_6926ffa3_1_   Pixar's Onward will be released on VOD on March 20 for $19.99 USD, and on Disney+ on April 3. Starring Chris Pratt and Tom Holland, the film was originally opened on March 3. In our review, we say, "Filmmaker Dan Scanlon has crafted an adventure that gleefully flies high with its fantasy elements, yet never loses touch with its grounded family tale. In that regard, it feels like '80s Amblin, but without being a stodgy homage. It's got charm from its playful production design to its exuberant voice cast to some deeply silly visual gags."

The Invisible Man: March 20

the-invisible-man   Universal Pictures will release The Invisible Man on VOD on March 20 for $19.99 USD. Elizabeth Moss stars in the phycological thriller, which was originally released on February 28. In our review, we say, "While this dark new take on the classic Universal Monster might not be for every audience, its inventive use of abuse and narcissism as a structural outline for horror means that this uniquely grim outing for The Invisible Man largely works. Leigh Whannell's dedication to crafting terror from abuse without necessarily making a statement might rub some viewers the wrong way, but The Invisible Man's stark settings, solid performances, and great production design."

Emma: March 20

Emma-large   Focus Features will release Emma on VOD on March 20 for $19.99 USD. Emma is the latest movie adaption of the Jane Austen novel, this one starring Anya Taylor-Joy in the title role. The film was originally released on February 21. According to a synopsis from Focus, "Emma Woodhouse is a restless 'queen bee' without rivals in her sleepy little English town. In this glittering satire of social class, Emma must navigate her way through the challenges of growing up, misguided matches and romantic missteps to realize the love that has been there all along."

The Hunt: March 20

hunt2.0   Universal Pictures will release The Hunt on VOD on March 20 for $19.99 USD. The political thriller was originally released on March 13. In our review, we say, "Before anybody saw it, Universal and Blumhouse’s The Hunt was the subject of much controversy last year, but it turns out that the actual film and its hyper-violent social commentary is smarter than it was given credit for back then."

Bloodshot: March 24

Bloodshot-Poster-featured-1280x720Sony and Columbia Pictures are releasing Bloodshot on VOD on March 24, for $19.99 USD. Starring Vin Diesel, Bloodshot was originally released in theaters on March 13. In our review, we say, "Bloodshot is unapologetically a popcorn movie of the switch-off-your-brain-and-kick-back variety. Diesel and company soldier through a wonky plot to deliver glowers, superhero poses, and loads of action. Director Wilson brings the heat with solid visual effects and a relentless pace."

The Gentlemen: March 24

200117155743-the-gentlemen-full-169STXfilms will release The Gentlemen on VOD on March 24 for $19.99 USD. Directed by Guy Ritchie and starring Matthew McConaughey and Charlie Hunnam, the film was originally released on January 24 in the US. In our review, we say, "[Hugh Grant] and Hunnam have an easy chemistry and provide most of The Gentlemen’s genuine laughs. Grant’s transition from playing charming leading men to less savory characters has been fun to watch and it’s hard to resist the temptation of believing his Hollywood-obsessed Fletcher could be a relative of Paddington 2’s wacky actor antagonist, Phoenix Buchanan."

Birds of Prey: March 24

birdsofprey-blogroll3-1580335266204Warner Bros. Pictures will release Birds of Prey on VOD on March 24 for $19.99 USD. The film was originally released on February 7, starring Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as The Huntress, and Ewan McGregor as Black Mask. In our review, we say, "In terms of sheer fun, Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) delivers in spades. Its zany energy, visceral fight sequences, and focus on one of DC’s most fascinating characters ensure that it continues Warner Bros.’ winning streak of big, bombastic comic book adaptations that are unafraid to embrace their inherent ridiculousness."

The Way Back: March 24

blood_benWarner Bros. will release The Way Back on VOD on March 24 for $19.99. Directed by Gavin O'Connor and starring Ben Affleck, this film was originally released on March 6. In our review, we say, "The Way Back is a gratifying sports movie that is made better than the average by some sadness, some realism, and Ben Affleck's performance. The Way Back might serve as an excellent double feature with Gavin O'Connor's Warrior, another sports movie that spices up (o.k., one last food metaphor) a perhaps-known sports narrative with excellent performances and a central drama that leaves the story without a proper underdog."

I Still Believe: March 27

c4be81b075c15a6124c89c44a21228f8Lionsgate and Kingdom Story Company will release I Still Believe on VOD on March 27. Starring KJ Apa and Britt Robertson, the film originally opened on March 13. I Still Believe centers on "young couple’s remarkable journey that proves hope can survive great tragedy and that love tested is the only love worth sharing," according to a synopsis from Lionsgate.

Sonic the Hedgehog: March 31

dimsParamount Pictures will release Sonic the Hedgehog on VOD on March 31. Originally released on February 14, the film stars Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic and Jim Carrey as the villainous Dr. Robotnik. In our review, we say, "While this family-friendly action-comedy suffers from a simplistic story and leans too heavily on tired visual cliches, Sonic the Hedgehog is nevertheless boosted by solid performances from Ben Schwartz as Sonic and Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik. Their ongoing cat-and-mouse game is entertaining, and passionate fans of the Sega franchise should appreciate all the nods to Sonic’s history. Make no mistake, this frantically-paced film is made first and foremost for Sonic fans."

Trolls World Tour

FotoJetAfter being originally slated for a wide theatrical release, Universal will release Trolls World Tour on April 10 for $19.99 USD. Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake return to star in the sequel to the 2016 musical hit, Trolls. The studio describes the film as "an adventure that will take them well beyond what they've known before, Poppy (Kendrick) and Branch (Timberlake) discover that they are but one of six different Troll tribes scattered over six different lands and devoted to six different kinds of music: Funk, Country, Techno, Classical, Pop, and Rock. Their world is about to get a lot bigger and a whole lot louder."

Arkansas: May 1

arkansas-movie-HD-posters-and-stills-8Lionsgate will release Arkansas straight to VOD on May 1. The crime thriller features an impressive cast, including Liam Hemsworth, Michael Kenneth Williams, John Malkovich, and Vince Vaughn. Here's how the studio describes the film: "Kyle (Hemsworth) and Swin (Duke) live by the orders of an Arkansas-based drug kingpin named Frog (Vaughn), whom they’ve never met. Posing as park rangers by day, they operate as low-level drug couriers by night under the watchful eye of Frog’s proxies (Malkovich, Vivica A. Fox). However, after one too many inept decisions, Kyle and Swin find themselves directly in Frog’s crosshairs, who mistakenly sees them as a threat to his empire." MLB The Show 20 Review – Bases Loaded

MLB The Show 20 suddenly finds itself in an unprecedented position. The COVID-19 coronavirus has disrupted sports across the globe, and baseball is no different, as Opening Day of the 2020 Major League Baseball season was recently postponed for at least the next two months--and even that seems optimistic. It's an unfathomable turn of events, yet it also means Sony San Diego's latest baseball sim is now one of the only ways to experience the 2020 season of America's favorite pastime. It's a good job, then, that MLB 20 maintains the series' consistently high quality. Refinements to fielding and hitting may only be incremental this year, but they add more depth to what is still one of the most compelling sports games on the market, while new additions and modes off the field increase the game's variety as you chart a course towards World Series glory.

Fielding and defense received a lot of love in last year's game, so MLB 20 adds a few more wrinkles without rocking the boat too much. The distinction between Gold Glove caliber outfielders and mere mortals is now slightly more pronounced, particularly when the CPU is in control. The best outfielders in the game are much more dialed in this year, reacting to the ball off the bat with authentic accuracy and a dependable first-step. On the flip side, the square peg you've lodged into the round hole in left field might struggle when it comes to reading the flight of the ball, committing a fair few errors over the course of a season as balls careen off the edge of his glove instead of nesting in its palm.

There's also a new Extreme Catch Indicator that identifies those bloop singles and hard-sinking line drives that are right on the edge of being catchable. If you have a player like Minnesota Twins center fielder Byron Buxton patrolling the outfield, you might take a chance and attempt a risky diving catch on one of these tough-to-reach balls, knowing full well that he's skilled enough to pull off a spectacular grab. With an average defender hustling towards the ball, however, you might prefer to play it safe and get yourself in position to gather the ball after it bounces. Surrendering a single is a much more positive outcome than laying out for a catch and completely missing the ball, resulting in a triple for the fortunate hitter.
