Tiger King ‘Sequel’ Series Investigating Carole Baskin Has Been Greenlit

Netflix's true-crime series Tiger King is the hottest show on TV at the moment so it should come as no surprise that more content about its oddball characters is in the works. But what might surprise you is that the new show won't be on Netflix. Investigation Discovery announced Monday that they have greenlit a new series, Investigating the Strange World of Joe Exotic, that will explore the show's other most notorious figure, Carole Baskin, along with the other colorful characters that populated Tiger King - Doc Antle and Jeff Lowe. [ignvideo width=610 height=374 url=https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/04/01/tiger-king-whos-the-worst] According to the press release, Investigating the Strange World of Joe Exotic promises to document "the investigation you didn’t get to see, revealing the secrets only Joe knows, the exclusive footage that has never been shown, and the search to answer the one question every person in America is asking themselves right now: although she’s denied it, is Carole Baskin responsible for the disappearance of her husband, Don Lewis?" The show will also explore, according to ID's official announcement, "What skeletons is Joe still hiding within his untold past? Is his conviction truly justified? Who is Jeff Lowe and what does the FBI really know? What secrets lie hidden within Doc Antle’s walls?" ID describes the show as a "definitive sequel," but it must be noted that as of now the only person from Netflix's Tiger King who is officially involved is the Tiger King himself, the currently incarcerated Joseph “Joe Exotic” Maldonado-Passage, and Tiger King filmmakers Eric Goode and Rebecca Chaiklin aren't associated with the project. Theresa McKeown and Colin Whelan will executive produce Investigating the Strange World of Joe Exotic, with Rebecca Sirmons as co-executive producer. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=best-true-crime-shows-and-movies-to-watch-online&captions=true"] Lowe also reportedly revealed that a new episode of Tiger King will be coming to Netflix this week, but Netflix has yet to confirm the news. “Viewers are understandably riveted by Netflix’s Tiger King, but the millions of true crime fans around the world were left wanting more,” said Henry Schleiff, Group President ID, Travel Channel, American Heroes Channel, and Destination America. “ID is the perfect place to find the inevitable sequel to this drama – featuring a missing husband, a hit man, and the illegal business of exotic animals. It's time to let the cat out of the bag and address the lingering questions that viewers demand be answered.” [caption id="attachment_2332918" align="alignnone" width="720"]Carole Baskin in Netflix's Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness. Carole Baskin in Netflix's Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness.[/caption] Tiger King documented the vicious rivalry between big cat enthusiasts Joe Exotic and Carole Baskin, with the former making it his personal crusade to destroy Baskin (ultimately becoming convicted in a plot to try to murder her). Exotic repeatedly resurfaced rumors that Baskin murdered her husband Don Lewis, whose disappearance has never been solved. After Tiger King debuted, a Florida sheriff made a plea for new leads in the 1997 cold case of Lewis' disappearance. Baskin still operates her Big Cat Rescue out of Tampa, Florida. Neil deGrasse Tyson Talks Cosmos Series and How it Honors Carl Sagan

When asked to become the new host for the continuation of the 1980 science documentary from the late Carl Sagan, Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson didn't immediately jump at the opportunity. Yet here he is, in the show’s third season with Cosmos: Possible Worlds.

"I was initially reluctant because I don’t like doing things that I know other people can do. I could list a dozen people who could host Cosmos, so I didn’t really need to do it. I would rather do things that no one can do. In fact, if we all expressed our talents in that way, imagine what kind of world that would be," Tyson explained in a phone interview with IGN.

"But then I thought about it," Tyson continued, "and I met Carl when I was 17 and he had this influence on me. He’s been a mentor, not in a 1-on-1 way, but a mentor by example and I thought, you know, there are things I could bring to the screen that others couldn’t, and maybe my hosting would represent a unique opportunity or make a unique statement."

[widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=cosmos-possible-worlds-gallery&captions=true"]

Neil deGrasse Tyson on Cosmos' Resurgence

The idea to continue the work of Carl Sagan with Cosmos was not previously planned but became a necessary continuation in the eyes of Ann Druyan, producer and writer on the show and wife of Sagan, as the current state of the world continues to shift over time.

“She [Druyan] realized there were other challenges that civilization was facing, that differed from what we faced in 1980," Tyson said. "In 1980 it was still the Cold War. The world was still held hostage by conflicts of political ideologies, and the cosmic perspective – something that Cosmos delivers magnificently – was something that as any astrophysicist knows, can completely change your outlook on the world. So, Ann felt the time had come."

Tyson explained the decision for Druyan also came from the rise of anti-science and climate change denials around the year 2010.

The second season – or continuation as it's more so described – of Cosmos premiered in 2014, titled Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey, with the third installment, Cosmos: Possible Worlds premiering it's first two episodes on March 9, 2020, and with subsequent episodes being released in pairs every Monday starting at 8:00 pm EDT / 7:00 pm CDT / 5:00pm PDT on National Geographic Channel.

Tyson explained the creative team considered many more stories than those that actually made it to air, but the ones that do – including the 13 episodes of the most recent season – had the best balance of science, human interest, visual effects, and compelling mission statements.

"By the time you’ve seen it and felt it and experienced it, you’re just going to rise up from the couch and say, 'I want to change the world because I need to,'" Tyson said.

Carl Sagan's Continued Influence

The connection to the original Cosmos documentary and influence from Sagan is apparent in the new seasons, all the way down to small details like a dandelion seed in the opening of the show to the Ship of the Imagination that fans will recognized received an upgrade, which are directly linked to the 1980 documentary.

"The look and feel and mission statement is the DNA of Cosmos. It’s not just science – if it were, it would just be another documentary. But you never felt that watching any episode of Cosmos. It’s a different contract between what’s on the screen and you, the viewer, as a consumer of that content. And that contract is, you will be enlightened by the science, but that’s not your takeaway," Tyson said.

"Your takeaway is you’re going to learn why that science matters to you, to your family, to your fellow humans, to Earth. You’re going to find out why that matters, and you’re going to feel empowered to do something about it. That’s the DNA of Cosmos."

[widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=behind-the-scenes-of-cosmos-possible-worlds&captions=true"]

The Future of Cosmos

In terms of another season, Tyson said he spoke with Druyan and she's already been thinking of a fourth season – yet Tyson said he doesn't need to host himself.

"I think each Cosmos should really have a next person hosted, who’s from a next-generation, so you keep it moving – like a torch that is passed. She's [Druyan] the engine for the stories that are being told, and if she’s 70 years old and has the energy to generate a whole other set of stories, more power to her."

“The world in 5 years may have a whole other set of challenges that will come front and center with Cosmos, that we don’t even foresee today," Tyson elaborated. "Or we can get an update on whatever role Cosmos played in getting people to become better shepherds of civilization compared to how we once were so our descendants would be proud of us for what we have put into motion, rather than embarrassed of us by what we have done.”

The third season of Cosmos is executive produced, written and directed by creator Ann Druyan, with Seth MacFarlane, Brannon Braga, and Jason Clark also serving as executive producers. The creative team includes acclaimed costume designer Ruth E. Carter, cinematographer Karl Walter Lindenlaub, and iconic composer Alan Silvestri. Voiceover artists include well known actors such as Sir Patrick Stewart, Seth MacFarlane, Viggo Mortensen, and Judd Hirsch.

Along with Cosmos: Possible Worlds premiering on National Geographic weekly, the complete season will air on Fox this summer. TCL’s First 5G Smartphone Costs Only $400

Earlier this year at CES 2020, TCL announced a trio of smartphones – the TCL 10L, 10 Pro, and 10 5G – to the US. The only problem is the company wasn’t ready to announce pricing and specs, but now we’re finally getting all of the information on these handsets and they look impressive. Of the three phones, the TCL 10 5G looks mighty interesting simply due to it being one of the first budget 5G phones that’ll come to market for $400. Every other current 5G phone to this point has cost about $1,000 or more. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=tcl-10-5g&captions=true"] The TCL 10 5G features a 6.53-inch Full HD+ LCD display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G processor, plus 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage (which users can expand with an up to 1TB microSD card). You get a sizable 4,500mAh battery with wireless charging, a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. While you might have expected the TCL 10 5G would come rocking the Snapdragon 865 like other 5G phones, the Snapdragon 765G is actually Qualcomm’s first chip to feature an integrated 5G modem. Comparatively, the Snapdragon 865 still requires a separate 5G modem chip. It also has a ton of cameras including a 64MP main camera, an 8MP ultrawide camera with a 118-degree field of view, a 5MP macro camera, and a 2MP depth sensor. On the front, there’s a 16MP camera sitting behind the cutout on the display. Unfortunately, there isn’t any concrete availability information for the TCL 10 5G as the company has only stated that it will release in the US sometime this year. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=tcl-10-pro&captions=true"]

TCL 10 Pro and TCL 10L

The TCL 10 Pro is the real flagship of this trio and it’s a pretty solid device for $449. The phone comes with a 6.47-inch AMOLED display complete with the curved sides and in-display fingerprint reader you might expect from a flagship device. It also has a Snapdragon 675 processor, 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage with a microSD card slot, 4,500mAh battery, and it even has a headphone jack. The camera setup on the TCL 10 Pro includes a 64MP main camera, a dedicated low light camera, super wide-angle and macro cameras, and a 24MP front-facing camera. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=tcl-10l&captions=true"] Lastly, the TCL 10L is the most budget option, flying in at $249. This low-cost device offers up a 6.53-inch display Snapdragon 665 processor, 6GB of RAM, 64GB of storage with a microSD card slot for expansion. What’s more, this affordable handset still packs four cameras, including a 48MP main, 8MP ultrawide, 2MP macro, 2MP depth sensor, and a 16MP front camera. There’s no mention of water-resistance on either the TCL 10 Pro or 10L, and neither device supports wireless charging. Both of these smartphones are slated for release this quarter, which should last until June, though there’s no exact date. Kingdom Keepers: Kevin Smith Reveals Canceled Disney Plus Series

Filmmaker Kevin Smith revealed he once worked on a Kingdom Keepers series for Disney+, at least until it was canceled by a new executive in charge of the streaming service. Smith said on a recent episode of his Fatman Beyond podcast that he witnessed the unique screen technology used on Disney Plus' The Mandalorian when he visited Disney studios for a tech day while working on a potential Kingdom Keepers show, as originally reported by Attractions Magazine. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=disney-plus-spotlight-april-2020&captions=true"] "I saw that wall in real life, when we were working on the...potential Disney Plus show Kingdom Keepers," Smith said. "They brought me in for...a tech day and they were like, 'this wall here can duplicate any background,'." Smith quote tweeted Attraction Magazine's story on Twitter on April 5 and added that he wrote the potential Kingdom Keepers show two years ago. He said it was planned as one of the first shows to launch on what we now know as Disney+. "Then a new exec was put in charge of the app and killed KK," he said. "Said we used too much Disney IP in one project (every character in the park comes to life)." You can check out the original tweet below. If you're unfamiliar with the Kingdom Keepers series, it's a series of books written by Ridley Pearson that features a cast of characters hired by Disney to be holographic guides at theme parks like Disney World's Magic Kingdom. When the parks close at night, Disney characters come out to play. Naturally, villains like Maleficent have grander plans. The cast of characters, or the Kingdom Keepers as it were, fight to protect the parks and the outside world from these Disney villains come to life. Smith followed up his tweet and said the executive that scrapped Kingdom Keepers is the same person who decided to put Star Wars and Marvel shows on Disney+. "So as much as I would've liked to make my show, I'm much happier watching #TheMandalorian and can't wait for #WandaVision. #FanFirstFilmmakerSecond," he said in the tweet. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/11/11/disney-plus-how-to-watch-on-tvs-game-consoles-and-more-ign-now"] Smith responded to another person on Twitter and said Kingdom Keepers was written with love by a kid (referring to himself) who grew up watching "The Wonderful World of Disney" with his family every Sunday night. He said he renamed the main character after the original team of Imagineers that worked with Walt Disney himself. "Felt like they overpaid me to write Disney fan fiction," he said in a tweet. While Kingdom Keepers won't be coming to Disney+, Marvel's What If...? show will and you can read our story about the Marvel's What If...? Disney Plus animated series explained. You can also check out how Disney's Artemis Fowl is now slated to release on Disney Plus after its theatrical release was canceled. Read up on everything coming to Disney Plus in April 2020. At Home With Olaf: Disney Animation Launches All-New Series of Frozen Shorts

Walt Disney Animation Studios has announced an all-new series of Frozen shorts, featuring the beloved character Olaf in 20 unique vignettes. In a tweet on Monday, the company unveiled the first video in the 'At Home With Olaf' web series, which has been created by Disney animator Hyrum Osmond and voice artist Josh Gad from the comfort of their own homes. The 41-second clip sees the lovable singing-talking snowman having fun with snow, as he starts throwing a stack of pre-made snowballs into the Arendelle forest one by one. Then, out of nowhere, a Snowgie appears. Olaf accidentally sends it flying through the air and onto the ice, as the two partake in an unconventional game of fetch. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/02/03/frozen-2-exclusive-deleted-scene"] "My friends Jennifer Lee and Hyrum Osmond called me up one day and asked me if I would be able to record some dialogue and sounds as Olaf from home," Gad explained on Twitter. "These little shorts done from home by Hyrum and the Disney Animation team are so charming and hopefully provide a smile during these scary times." Disney has yet to share a release schedule for the rest of the At Home With Olaf shorts, but they are expected to be uploaded to the new Disney Magic Moments video portal, together with Walt Disney Animation Studios' YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram channels. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=46-movies-that-made-1-billion-at-the-box-office&captions=true"] The Walt Disney Company has been maximising its efforts to spread smiles and create magic amid the COVID-19 crisis. In March, the House of Mouse acknowledged the "challenging times" that people are experiencing around the world, as the company unveiled its plans to release Frozen 2 on Disney+ three months earlier than planned for families to enjoy from home. Mafia 2 And Mafia 3 Definitive Editions Listed By Ratings Board

Mafia 2 and Mafia 3 Definitive Editions have been rated by the Taiwan Digital Game Rating Committee. The news arrives thanks to a tweet from Nibellion, which links to the website of the ratings board where the games were found to be registered by Take-Two Asia Pte Ltd. Each game is rated in three instances for PC, PS4 and Xbox One, suggesting that the game will land on all current-gen platforms at launch. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2016/10/11/mafia-3-review"] If you click on any of the individual trademarks you'll see that the publisher is listed as 2K Games, with Mafia 3 studio Hangar 13 developing the project. You may remember that Mafia II was developed by 2K Czech, which has now been merged into Hangar 13. The developer has studios in Novato, Brighton, Prague and Brno. We first heard rumours of a return for the Mafia franchise back in August of 2019, when initial trademarks were filed. Over the weekend, we heard from Gematsu that the Definitive Edition for Mafia 2 was rated in Korea, which backs up the credibility of this remaster. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2016/06/05/mafia-in-five-minutes"] There's no information about a potential release date for either of these Definitive Editions but we'll no doubt hear more about them soon. For more on Mafia 2, check out our review of the game from 2010, where we called it "a solid little game that will give you a fun ride." Cooking Mama: Cookstar Creators Move to Quash Cryptomining Speculation

The developer and publisher for Cooking Mama: Cookstar have moved to quash speculation that the game allows for background cryptocurrency mining when running on Switch. Last week, IGN reported on the confusing release and provenance of the new Cooking Mama game, which has seen the digital version pulled from Nintendo eShop, while making its way to select stores as a boxed game. Subsequently, a tweet including a supposed screenshot from Discord chat about the game began circulating. That screenshot alleged that, while running, the game is "Usiing your system to mine Crypto Currency and potentially handig your personal info as well [sp]". Cryptocurrency mining (a.k.a. cryptomining) is a process of authenticating cryptocurrency payments, earning a small payment in the process - if true, this would mean your Switch hardware was being used to earn money for a third party. A reply to that original message includes a series of follow-up details, some of which are drawn from IGN's report, and several of which are provably false. Following that tweet, both developer 1st Playable and publisher Planet Entertainment (through the Cookstar Twitter account) have refuted the allegation. Tweeting for the first time since 2017, 1st Playable explained: "As the developers we can say with certainty there is no cryptocurrency or data collection or blockchain or anything else shady in the code. The Nintendo Switch is a very safe platform, with none of the data and privacy issues associated with some mobile and PC games." The Cookstar Twitter account echoed the same point, and referred to a much-discussed 2019 press release that indicated publisher Planet Entertainment did aim to add blockchain technology to its games, including Cooking Mama - a goal it says never came to fruition. "We looked at these options as a means to allow players to trade in-game assets", reads a follow-up tweet. "However, we only explored the theory behind the concept, not the implementation. Cooking Mama: Cookstar, nor any of our other titles in the past or near future will utilize crypto technology." [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=cooking-mama-cookstar-screenshots&captions=true"] Independent sources have supported the developer and publisher's statements. Several Twitter users that reverse engineer games have reported that the game contains no code related to blockchain or cryptomining. IGN has verified with players that do own the game that claims of it causing the Switch to overheat also appear to be false, although battery drain does seem to be an issue (this could be down to any number of factors, however). Cookstar can also be played offline, contrary to claims that it was an always-online game to allow for background cryptomining. This controversy has also has helped clear up some of the previous confusion around Cooking Mama: Cookstar, primarily who made the game, and its connection to blockchain technology. However, aside from acknowledging "distribution issues", neither developer or publisher has addressed why the game was pulled from Nintendo eShop in the first place. IGN has, once again, reached out for comment. [poilib element="accentDivider"]
