Google Stadia Going Free Starting Today

Google has announced that, starting today and rolling out over the next 48 hours, Stadia is now free to use in all 14 countries where the games streaming service is supported, so long as users have a Gmail account. New users can sign up at Stadia's website with their Gmail account, with access at the free tier allowing players to purchase games and stream them with up to 1080p/60 fps with stereo surround sound. Players who sign up today during this new free rollout, however, will also receive two free months to Stadia's Pro subscription tier level, with the option to either continue a $9.99/month subscription or opt out afterward. And anyone already subscribed to Stadia Pro will simply not be charged for the next two months of the service. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/11/22/google-stadia-review"] The Pro subscription tier allows players claim free games for their Stadia library on a regular basis, which they will have access to so long as that subscription is held, similar to a PlayStation Plus subscription. The current list of free games Stadia Pro users can claim is:
  • Destiny 2: The Collection
  • GRID
  • Gylt
  • SteamWorld Dig 2
  • SteamWorld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech
  • Serious Sam Collection
  • Spitlings
  • Stacks on Stacks (on Stacks)
  • Thumper
[poilib element="poll" parameters="id=a8c672be-9376-4baf-b37b-a275c92b1506"] Normally, Stadia Pro will also allow users to play games in up to 4K/60fps/HDR format, but Google has also announced today that, in light of the current coronavirus pandemic and the increased strain on internet usage, Google is developing the default screen resolution for all players to be 1080p, though this change is not yet live. "To reduce load on the internet further, we’re working toward a temporary feature that changes the default screen resolution from 4k to 1080p," VP and GM of Stadia Phil Harrison said in a statement alongside the announcement. "With increased demand due to more people at home during this time, we’re taking a responsible approach to internet traffic... The vast majority of people on a desktop or laptop won’t notice a significant drop in gameplay quality, but you can choose your data usage options in the Stadia app." [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=google-stadia-review&captions=true"] Stadia is available to play through an app on both Android and iOS devices, including laptops, desktops through Chrome, tablets, Google Pixel phones and some Android phones. Google has a full list of compatible mice, keyboards, and controllers to use with Stadia games. There are currently 38 games available to purchase through Stadia to play on Google's streaming service, with more than 120 games expected to come to Stadia in 2020. The Stadia Premiere Edition, which comes with a Stadia Controller, and three months of Stadia Pro, is available for $129.99 in the U.S., Canada, U.K., and EU. Stadia is available in the U.S., Canada, U.K., Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Finland, with more territories expected to be added this year. Since Stadia's launch late last year, we've learned that former God of War executive producer Shannon Studstill is heading up a new Stadia dev team, Journey to the Savage Planet developers Typhoon Studios have since joined Google as a Stadia first-party team, and that Gears Tactics co-developer Splash Damage is making a Stadia exclusive.

Cyberpunk 2077 Twitter Account Detailing the Game’s Gangs and Corps

CD Projekt Red has started detailed some of the in-game gangs and corporations that will appear in Cyberpunk 2077, starting with The Mox. The studio shared the news on Twitter, with a short video showcasing the gang's in-game iconography. The Mox or "Moxes" was "formed in 2076 after the death of Elizabeth "Lizzie" Borden, a strip club owner & ex-prostitute who treated her workers fairly and defended them from violent clients." According to the tweet, The Mox's motivation is to "protect working girls and guys from violence and abuse." Their gang name is written in old school text, with a skull doll being their chosen symbol. Global Community Lead Marcin Momot weighed in with a quote retweet, noting that this is the first entry in a "series of posts talking about corporations and gangs that you will be able to encounter in the streets of Night City." Expect a few more of these information drops over the coming months as we approach Cyberpunk 2077's September release date. In other Cyberpunk 2077 news, CD Projekt Red recently revealed an incredible figurine of the game's female protagonist. There are plenty of pictures of the impressive Pure Arts model after the jump. Observer: System Redux Coming to Next-Gen

Bloober Team, creator of Layers of Fear and the Blair Witch game, has teased the release of Observer: System Redux for next-gen consoles. Teased in a tweet with a short teaser trailer (below), it's not entirely clear what System Redux will be, but the title and art used imply a remaster of the original 2017 cyberpunk horror game. It seems we'll learn more about the game from Bloober soon, and we'll be sure to update this story as that new information comes in. Observer starred the late Rutger Hauer - playing a detective in a dystopian, futuristic Krakow - investigating mysterious events in an increasingly terrifying apartment block. We named it one of the best horror games of 2017, one of the 25 scariest games of the current console generation, and one of the best cyberpunk games to tide you over until Cyberpunk 2077 arrives. Given that Observer arrived on all major platforms, it seems likely that System Redux will arrive on both Xbox Series X and PS5. Still not sure which next-gen console you're going to go with? We've got a comparison chart for PS5 and Xbox Series X to help you pick, including a breakdown of their controllers, now that the PS5 DualSense has been revealed. ESRB Reassures on Possibility of Shutdown, Game Delays

The US games rating agency, the ESRB, has played down any possibility that it will shut down during the outbreak of COVID-19, potentially delaying games waiting to receive ratings. This follows the shutdown of Japanese ratings agency, CERO until at least May 6. CERO explained that its ratings process is dependant on reviewers visiting the office and thus cannot continue operations until a country-wide lockdown is lifted. With console games requiring a CERO rating to see release in Japan, it's led to worry about game delays in the country. Speaking to IGN, the ESRB has quelled fears about a similar situation in the US, despite moving to a work-from-home solution in recent weeks: "Thanks to a good deal of advance planning, since March 16 ESRB has been operating remotely due to the COVID-19 outbreak", explained an ESRB spokesperson. "We have seen no delay in assigning ratings. We will continue to assign ratings remotely for as long as required." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2017/10/12/the-esrb-and-the-loot-box-gambling-controversy"] All console manufacturers, and most digital storefronts, require games to receive an ESRB rating to allow a US release, meaning any stoppage of ratings could see games delayed. Thankfully, it seems that won't be a problem. IGN has reached out to PEGI, the ESRB's European equivalent, and the Australian Classification Board to confirm whether the same measures are being taken in those regions, and delays have been avoided. Here are some ways to help others and stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. [poilib element="accentDivider"]

Louisiana Police Apologize for Using The Purge Siren to Signal Lockdown Curfew

Louisiana police have had to apologise for using a siren almost identical to the one used in The Purge to signal a lockdown curfew during the city's coronavirus (COVID-19) quarantine. According to Variety, Crowley police patrolled the streets of Acadia Parish with the noise blaring out of their squad cars to alert residents of the new nightly curfew that is in place between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m., but many found the sound to be eerily familiar to the one from the horror franchise. Officials were made aware of the similarities between the real-life siren, heard in a video posted on the KATC news channel, and the alarm used in the film and TV series to signify the start of an annual government-sanctioned event in which all crime, including murder, becomes legal for 12 continuous hours. You can listen to The Purge siren in the trailer below: [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2018/04/06/the-first-purge-trailer-1"] Speaking to KATC, Crowley Police Chief Jimmy Broussard said he hadn't realised that the siren was associated with the franchise, and that he doesn't plan on using any type of alarm for the curfew going forward. "Last night a 'Purge Siren' was utilized by the Crowley Police Department as part of their starting curfew. We have received numerous complaints with the belief that our agency was involved in this process. We were not involved in the use of the 'Purge Siren' and will not utilize any type of siren for this purpose," said Acadia Parish Sheriff K.P. Gibson in a separate statement to the news station. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=horror-movie-franchises-that-never-stopped-being-entertaining&captions=true"] The Purge is one of the most political horror franchises ever produced, and every instalment offers thoughtful political allegories and hard-edged, disturbing violence. The fifth, and supposedly final, entry into the film series is currently scheduled for release on July 10, but it could yet join the growing list of movie and TV productions affected by COVID-19. CoD: Warzone Season Three Adds Quads, Dog, and a New Operator

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare's Warzone mode has kicked off a new season today, introducing a new operators, a tweaked game mode, plenty of cosmetics and, most importantly, a dog. The Warzone update is now available on all platforms and allows players to form squads of four instead of the initial trio approach. This gives the game a full set of varied squad sizes up to four, following on from the solo queue update which landed in mid-March. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/03/23/call-of-duty-warzone-review"] As well as the new Quads mode, you can expect new playlists, weapons and blueprints (including silenced and non-silenced gun variants) on the ground in Warzone, as well as vehicle skins so you can kit out your quad bikes and trucks in-game. Riley the German Shepherd, the resident good boy from Call of Duty: Ghosts will also make an appearance as a unique finishing move in-game, proving his bite is just as bad as his bark. Outside of Warzone, Season Three introduces a few new maps including a remaster of the original Call of Duty 4's Backlot map and a few new game modes arriving later in the season, including Gun Game Reloaded and Reinfected Ground War. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/11/01/call-of-duty-modern-warfare-review"] The Season Three mascot is none other than Alex, a new operator who you'll be acquainted with if you've played Modern Warfare's campaign mode. His model features a few post-narrative aesthetic tweaks, but no spoilers here! Later in the season, two more operators will arrive in the shape of Ronin and Iskra, available through store bundles. If you're new to the game, Activision has also revealed the Modern Warfare Battle Pass edition, which gives you the full game and 3000 CP, as well as a suite of skins. This means you can unlock the season three battle pass straight away and jump into the action. You can check out the patch notes over on Modern Warfare developer Infinity Ward's website, which detail all of the new content coming to the game with this bumper update. Netflix Updates Parental Controls to Remove Content From Searches, Filter by Rating

Netflix has launched a batch of updated and improved parental controls, allowing more granular control of the content displayed to kids and the ability to lock adult profiles with PINs. Other changes include the ability to see a child’s viewing history and the option to disable autoplay on TV shows in kids’ profiles. Netflix has outlined the updates in a new blog post, attributing the changes to feedback received from members. [caption id="attachment_2333928" align="aligncenter" width="837"]Lock your kids out of your profiles with PINs. Lock your kids out of your profiles with PINs.[/caption] “Choice and control have always been important for our members, especially parents,” wrote Netflix’s Kids Product Manager, Michelle Parsons. “We hope that these additional controls will help parents make the right choices for their families.” Content can be filtered by rating, and the filters are built using the ratings systems relevant to the country you’re accessing Netflix from. Expect More (Small) Movies to Bypass Theatrical for Disney Plus

Expect Disney to shift more movies initially slated for theatrical release to streaming debuts on Disney+ instead due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Disney executive chairman Bob Iger revealed that consumers should expect to see the company push more content (and earlier) to their digital platforms like Disney+ in light of the current global crisis. Iger's comments come just days after the studio announced it had scrapped plans to release Artemis Fowl theatrically, opting to debut the film on Disney+ instead. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/04/03/artemis-fowl-theatrical-release-dropped-will-debut-on-disney-plus"] "There are some we’ve decided to put on Disney+. We already announced one, Artemis Fowl, that would have been released in theaters. Others we’ve simply delayed," Iger informed Barron's. "In terms of movies going ahead after Artemis, there may be a few more that we end up putting directly onto Disney+, but for the most part, a lot of the big tentpole Disney films, we’ll simply wait for slots. In some cases, we’ve announced new ones already, but later on in the calendar." [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=disney-plus-spotlight-april-2020&captions=true"][poilib element="accentDivider"] Iger's emphasis on non-tentpole films shifting to Disney+ probably doesn't bode well for the likes of former Fox titles The New Mutants, The Personal History of David Copperfield, Antlers, and The Woman in the Window. None of those films were given new theatrical release dates in Disney's recent announcement, leading to speculation that they could end up on Disney-owned streaming platforms such as Disney+ or Hulu. All four films had initially been slated to open in theaters.

Disney May Check Visitors Temperatures When Parks Reopen

Disney executive chairman Bob Iger says the company may implement new procedures to screen visitors when their theme parks reopen after the coronavirus pandemic, including taking attendees' temperatures. (A high temperature is a symptom of COVID-19.) Iger informed Barron's that, as Disney did after 9/11, new safety measures and additional scrutiny will be needed to guarantee customer safety even if it means they will have to wait in line longer to enter the theme parks. A return to normalcy, Iger explained, will only be achieved if customers "feel comfortable that they’re safe." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/03/11/spider-man-at-avengers-campus-disney-california-adventure-park"] "Just as we now do bag checks for everybody that goes into our parks, it could be that at some point we add a component of that that takes people’s temperatures, as a for-instance. We’re studying very carefully what China has been trying to do in terms of their return to normalcy," Iger said. "And one of the things that’s obvious is they’ve conscripted a large segment of their population to monitor others in terms of their health. You can’t get on a bus or a subway or a train or enter a high-rise building there -- and I’m sure this will be the case when their schools reopen -- without having your temperature taken." [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=avengers-campus-concept-art&captions=true"] Disneyland and Disney World remain indefinitely closed after Disney scrapped their initial hopes of reopening their U.S. theme park resorts at the end of March. For attractions you can look forward to in the future when the parks reopen, get all the details on Disneyland's upcoming Marvel-themed expansion, Avengers Campus, and the land's new Spider-Man ride featuring Tom Holland. Disney recently announced a slate of new release dates for their movies postponed due to COVID-19, and have pivoted to releasing some of their titles, like Onward, earlier than expected on VOD. The studio also scrapped plans to release Artemis Fowl theatrically, opting to debut the film on Disney+ instead.
