Jackman on MCU Rebooting Wolverine: ‘It’s Too Good of a Character Not To’

Hugh Jackman has put the character of Wolverine behind him and is at peace with another actor playing the iconic X-Man in the future, although he does wish the X-Men had joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe back when he was still playing the role. "If seven years ago that [Disney-Fox acquisition and X-Men joining the MCU] had happened I’d be like, 'Oh yeah!' but I knew it was the right time for me to leave the party—not just for me, but for the character," Jackman told The Daily Beast. "Somebody else will pick it up and run with it. It’s too good of a character not to," the actor, who last played Wolverine in 2017's Logan, conceded. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=13-avengersx-menfantastic-four-crossovers-we-wish-were-movies&captions=true"] Jackman likened it to when "you’re on your way home and your friend rings you and goes, 'Oh, dude, a new DJ just came on and the music is awesome, are you going to come back?' And you say, 'Sounds good but… no.' They’re fine with someone else." Jackman has been asked about the Wolverine/MCU dream many times these last few years as the Marvel Cinematic Universe has grown in success. Jackman said in 2015, "The thing I’ve always loved about the comic-book world is how the fun thing was how a writer of a comic book could just pull all these characters together and what became a Friday-night discussion of ‘it would be cool to see Batman fight Wolverine’ and bang, Monday morning they’re working on it, you know. But that’s an idealized world.” [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/07/21/kevin-feige-on-x-men-plans-no-avengers-movie-in-phase-4-comic-con-2019"] In 2017, Jackman again said if the prospect of Wolverine being in the MCU had been a reality at that time then he would've thought twice about hanging up his claws. "If that was on the table when I made my decision [to stop playing the character]," Jackman said, "it certainly would have made me pause. That’s for sure. Because I always love the idea of him within that dynamic, with the Hulk obviously, with Iron Man but there’s a lot of smarter people with MBAs who can’t figure that out." For now, the X-Men's debut in the MCU is still some years away while the studio continues to work on their Phase 4 slate.

JJ Abrams Developing Justice League Dark Show for HBO Max

HBO Max is developing three high-concept projects from J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot - a DC Comics-inspired series using characters from Justice League Dark; a show set at The Shining's infamous Overlook Hotel; and an original 1970s-set drama centered around a getaway driver. All three hourlong dramas have been given production commitments, but given Abrams' track record, it's a fairly safe bet that all three TV shows will make it to series. The trio of shows will be produced by Warner Bros. Television; Bad Robot currently produces Westworld, Castle Rock, and HBO's upcoming Demimonde and Lovecraft Country, along with Apple TV+ series Lisey’s Story, Little Voice, and My Glory Was I Had Such Friends. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/10/30/green-lantern-tv-show-coming-to-hbo-max-ign-now"] Duster, co-written by J.J. Abrams and The Walking Dead's LaToya Morgan is set in the Southwest in the '70s - here's how HBO Max describes it: "The life of a gutsy getaway driver for a growing crime syndicate goes from awful to wildly, stupidly, dangerously awful." Overlook is described as "a horror-thriller series inspired by and featuring iconic characters from Stephen King's masterpiece The Shining. Overlook explores the untold, terrifying stories of the most famous haunted hotel in American fiction." HBO Max declined to give specific details about the DC Comics series, except to say it will be "a major series based on DC characters in the Justice League Dark Universe, details to be revealed soon." Back in January, reports surfaced about multiple Justice League Dark projects in development from Abrams, including movie and TV adaptations, as well as the possibility that some JLD characters could receive solo projects in addition to a team-up. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=everything-coming-to-hbo-max&captions=true"] “What an amazing start to our association with the wildly imaginative Bad Robot team under J.J. and Katie [McGrath],” said Kevin Reilly, Chief Content Officer, HBO Max and President, TNT, TBS, & truTV. “What could be better than an original J.J. idea and then Warner Bros. letting them loose on iconic I.P. from Stephen King and the DC Universe and to provide more must-have programming on HBO Max.” Justice League Dark won't be the only DC-inspired project on HBO Max, which is also developing a Green Lantern series from Arrowverse mastermind Greg Berlanti, as well as Strange Adventures, an anthology series that "will explore close-ended morality tales about the intersecting lives of mortals and superhumans," and DC Super Hero High, a half-hour comedy set at a boarding school following a group of teenagers who are destined to one day join the ranks of DC’s most epic heroes. Overlook marks the latest Stephen King-inspired project from Warner Bros. - the film division released King's Shining sequel Doctor Sleep, starring Ewan McGregor, in 2019, while King's works continue to inspire Hulu's Castle Rock, which recently aired its second season, featuring characters from Misery.

New Green Hornet and Kato Movie in Development

Despite a 2011 film starring Seth Rogen that proved a commercial and critical disappointment, Hollywood is trying to bring old school superhero The Green Hornet back to the big screen one more time. Universal Pictures and Amasia Entertainment have teamed to develop a new feature film project titled The Green Hornet and Kato. Kato, you may recall, began as Green Hornet's sidekick before later incarnations of the story gave the martial artist the respect he deserved and made him a true crime-fighting equal of Green Hornet. “The Green Hornet is one of the most iconic and beloved superhero tales ever created, and it has entertained generations of fans in every form of storytelling," Universal announced Thursday, saying they are "thrilled" to "launch an exciting new cinematic world for Britt Reid, Kato, and the Black Beauty, and we can’t wait to share it with global audiences soon.” [ignvideo width=610 height=374 url=https://www.ign.com/videos/2010/11/24/the-green-hornet-trailer-2] “Universal will be a great home for our new Green Hornet and Kato. The team at Universal shares our passion & enthusiasm for the property and will devote the resources to launch a truly global franchise," said Amasia co-founder Michael Helfant. "And, it’s very cool that Universal was the original distributor of the 1940’s movie serials. Our goal is to make a film that existing fans will love, and new fans will love to discover. With Universal, it feels like we are merging the past and the future, creating a contemporary version of the franchise that is fresh and exciting while respecting its long legacy and history. I can’t wait!” The Green Hornet, aka publisher Britt Reid, is a classic hero of pulp fiction, radio, film serials, and TV. Alongside Kato, he patrolled the streets in his tricked-out car, the Black Beauty. Bruce Lee portrayed Kato in the 1960s Green Hornet TV series opposite Van Williams, which famously saw them cross-over with Adam West's Batman. (Kato and Burt Ward's Robin fought to a draw because the martial arts master Lee refused to lose to the Boy Wonder.) [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=stars-who-were-almost-superheroes&captions=true"] Michel Gondry directed the 2011 film, which starred Rogen, Jay Chou as Kato, Cameron Diaz, and Christoph Waltz. That project, released by Sony, had a very long gestation in development hell, going through numerous studios (including Universal), filmmakers (Kevin Smith), and actors (George Clooney, Jet Li, Jake Gyllenhaal) before Gondry brought it to the screen as an action-comedy. In our review of Gondry's film, we wrote: "While it may not ultimately prove memorable enough to launch a new film franchise, The Green Hornet is still a fun action-comedy and clever superhero satire that's about as close to a cool summer movie as you're going to get in the dead of winter."

Brian Dennehy, Rambo Villain and Tommy Boy’s Dad, Dies at 81

Brian Dennehy, the burly character actor who was Rambo's adversary in the original First Blood and Chris Farley's doting dad in Tommy Boy, has died at the age of 81. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Dennehy died at his home in Connecticut on April 15 of natural causes. His daughter Elizabeth paid tribute to him on Twitter: "It is with heavy hearts we announce that our father, Brian passed away last night from natural causes, not Covid-related. Larger than life, generous to a fault, a proud and devoted father and grandfather, he will be missed by his wife Jennifer, family  and many friends." [caption id="attachment_2338148" align="alignnone" width="720"]Brian Dennehy and Sylvester Stallone in First Blood. Brian Dennehy and Sylvester Stallone in First Blood.[/caption] With his large frame and tough guy bearing, Dennehy was a natural for authority figures, with his turn as the relentless Sheriff Teasle in the original Rambo film, First Blood, launching him to greater notoriety. But Dennehy, a former football player, also lent his characters a blue collar authenticity and could play sympathetic figures, such as the dad in Tommy Boy and Django, the leader of the rats, in Pixar's Ratatouille. The veteran actor appeared in a slew of films from the 1970s to the 2000s, including Cocoon, Presumed Innocent, Silverado, F/X, Best Seller, 10, and the remake of Assault on Precinct 13. He also portrayed Dom Wilkinson on The Blacklist. Dennehy was also an acclaimed stage actor, winning Tonys for his portrayal of Wily Loman in a revival of Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman and for Eugene O'Neill's Long Day's Journey into Night.
