Nintendo 3DS Production Has Ended After 9 Years

Nintendo has officially ended production of the Nintendo 3DS family of systems after 10 years. As first reported by Japanese Nintendo, the confirmation has appeared on both Nintendo Japanese's website and the Nintendo 3DS UK page, bringing an end to the story of the handheld system that has sold more than 75.87 million units. Nintendo America's 3DS page now just simply redirects to the home page. The Nintendo 3DS was first released in 2011 at $250 and was able to display stereoscopic 3D to the player without the need of 3D glasses. It launched with games like Pilotwings Resort, Steel Diver, and Nintendogs + Cats, and new services like StreetPass and SpotPass, but it didn't quite hit the mark at the start. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2017/03/30/top-25-nintendo-3ds-games-spring-2017-update"] In our review of the original Nintendo 3DS, we said "The 3DS is truly a remarkable device and a compelling expansion to Nintendo's handheld gaming platform, but it is far from perfect. Though the 3D experience has its moments of absolute brilliance, it can be short-lived due to the imprecise nature of glasses-free 3D technology, with distortion, ghosting, and user discomfort." Less than six months after the Nintendo 3DS' launch, Nintendo dropped the price from $250 to $169, and offered those who had already purchased a 3DS the Ambassador Program which included 10 NES and 10 Gameboy Advance games. The Nintendo 3DS saw multiple redesigns, including the New Nintendo 3DS, the New Nintendo 3DS XL, the Nintendo 2DS, and the New Nintendo 2DS XL. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=a-history-of-nintendo-hardware-1977-to-now&captions=true"] We've ranked our 25 Best Nintendo 3DS Games, and our list is led by Pokemon Sun & Moon, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Super Mario 3D Land, Fire Emblem Awakening, and The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds. The Nintendo 3DS and Wii U were the final two systems that had Nintendo co-developing for each. With the release of the Switch in 2017, Nintendo focused its home console and handheld development into one system. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Have a tip for us? Myst VR Announced for Oculus Quest

Oculus has announced that Myst VR will be headed to the Oculus Quest platform later this year. Myst VR will let players experience "a fresh take on their Myst experience from 1993." Myst VR is being developed by Cyan Worlds, the indie studio that created the original Myst. The return of Myst in VR was announced at yesterday's Facebook Connect, an event that revealed the Oculus Quest 2, new VR Assassin's Creed and Splinter Cell games, and much more. The Oculus Quest 2 will be shipping out on October 13, 2020, and features a more powerful Qualcomm XR2 VR-optimized processor and a higher resolution (nearly 2K per eye). The Oculus Quest 2 will cost $300 for the 64GB model and $400 for the 256GB model. These are a full $100 cheaper than the original Quest's pricing. PS5 Will Be Backwards Compatible with ’99 Percent’ of PS4 Games

Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO and President Jim Ryan has stated that "99 percent" of the "thousands" of PlayStation 4 games its tested will be playable on PlayStation 5 via backwards compatibility. Speaking to The Washington Post, Ryan also discussed Sony's new PS Plus Collection, which will offer "18 PS4 first-party titles for download to subscribers to the PlayStation online service." Ryan continued to say that he "expects up to four years for the PlayStation 4's expected life span." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/god-of-war-ragnarok-teaser-trailer"] "The PS4 community will continue to be incredibly important to us for three or four years," Ryan said. "Many will transition to PS5, we hope if we do our job well, but tens of millions will still be engaged with the PS4." This commitment to PS4 was echoed with Sony's announcement that Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Sackboy a Big Adventure, and Horizon Forbidden West will also launch on PS4. However, this decision does seem to go against Ryan's previous statement that he was not interested in making PS4 versions of PS5 games. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=every-game-and-announcement-featured-in-the-playstation-5-showcase-event&captions=true"] This interview followed the PlayStation 5 Showcase event that revealed the price and release date of the PS5, Final Fantasy XVI, a sequel to 2018's God of War, Hogwarts Legacy, and so much more. Fisher’s Claims Reportedly Started After Being Offered Small Cameo in The Flash

A new report claims Cyborg actor Ray Fisher didn't begin his campaign against Warner Bros. over working on the Justice League reshoots until after he was offered only a small cameo in The Flash, the upcoming movie starring Fisher's Justice League co-stars Ezra Miller and Ben Affleck as well as Michael Keaton. The Wrap, citing two anonymous insiders with purported knowledge of the situation, reports that Warner Bros. has not heard back from Fisher's team since he was offered a small role in The Flash in June. (The inclusion of Cyborg in the long-gestating Flash movie was first revealed by Justice League executive producer Deborah Snyder in 2016.) Fisher's reps at Paradigm Agency and Management 360 issued the following statement to The Wrap, which points out that their response doesn't address the size of the role, the current state of negotiations, or the timing of it all:

“Mr. Fisher is, and has been, under contract with WB Pictures since 2014. ... Per the terms of that pre-negotiated contract, the option to include Mr. Fisher as the character of Victor Stone (aka Cyborg) has always rested in the hands in WB Pictures.”

Fisher had been attached to a solo Cyborg movie, which was first announced back in 2014 for a 2020 release, but which The Wrap claims was stopped in its development back in 2016. The Wrap also claims Warner Bros. didn't respond to their request for comment. Ray Fisher responded to The Wrap's report on Twitter without refuting any of its specifics except to refer to it as "a trash article": Fisher's first tweet claiming he wanted to retract his past praise for Justice League reshoots director Joss Whedon came on June 29, which The Wrap claims came after Warners had offered Fisher the cameo in The Flash. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=the-flash-movies-possible-dceu-cameos&captions=true"] Then, in July, Fisher stepped up his campaign against Warners and Whedon alleging a toxic and hostile working environment on Whedon's set and that former DC Films bosses Geoff Johns and Jon Berg enabled it. (Berg denies this.) While Fisher was initially encouraging in his social media about the news in August that Warner Bros. was launching an investigation into the actor's claims, by September he claimed DC Films president Walter Hamada was covering for Geoff Johns and impeding the investigation. Warner Bros. issued a denial, claiming Fisher has refused to cooperate with the investigation. Fisher denied this and questioned the independence of the investigation led by an outside firm hired by WarnerMedia. Since then, Justice League co-star Jason Momoa has come out in support of Ray Fisher's campaign against Warner Bros., notably the only Justice League cast member to do so. Barring any pandemic-related delays, The Flash is aiming to begin production in March 2021 under the direction of Andy Muschietti (the It films). Both Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck will reprise their respective roles as Batman for the film, the latter announcement of which Fisher recently blasted as a public relations stunt on the part of Warner Bros. to distract from the investigation. Producer Barbara Muschietti revealed at DC FanDome that The Flash will be a soft reboot of the DCEU. Final Fantasy 16 and Demon’s Souls PC Announcements Were Just Mysteriously Scrubbed

During today’s PS5 event Final Fantasy 16 and Demon’s Souls were announced for PC alongside PlayStation 5. But now it’s become unclear what the PC release details are looking like for either of those two titles. During today’s PS5 event, trailers for both Final Fantasy 16 and Demon’s Souls included small print at the end that indicated some kind of release on PC. You can see the small print as captured below. also on pc ds_pc However, since those trailers went live any mention of a PC release for both Final Fantasy 16 and Demon’s Souls appear to have been mysteriously scrubbed. In the case of FF 16, Square Enix asked IGN to remove mention of PC from our initial FF 16 news story, and when asked for a statement a Square Enix spokesperson said, “We have no further information on if Final Fantasy XVI will be released on platforms other than the PS5.” As for Demon's Souls, IGN has been told that the text, "stating the remake would be coming to PC and “other consoles” was included in error." Indeed, the FF 16 trailer no longer includes any small print that indicates another platform besides the PS5. And the Demon’s Souls trailer has been taken down as of the time of this report. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/09/16/final-fantasy-16-reveal-trailer"] For now it seems the PC release for either FF 16 and Demon’s Souls has become murkier.
