Someone Added Realtime Ray Tracing to SNES Games

Ray tracing is one of the biggest advancements in gaming technology and is utilized by high-end PCs, the PlayStation 5, and both the Xbox Series X and S. Oh, and also some Super Nintendo games thanks to one incredible modder. Ray tracing is a rendering technique the simulates the way light bounces off objects, which can create much more realistic shadows, reflections, and lighting effects, and game developer and software engineer Ben Carter of Shironeko Labs took on the challenge on making it work on the SNES with his SuperRT chip. You can see it in action here. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/10/18/the-100-best-games-of-all-time-in-10-minutes"] Carter wanted to do something similar to Nintendo's Super FX chip that was used in games like Star Fox to add advanced 3D graphics and special effects, and created a new field-programmable gate array (FGPA) chip that would render the ray tracing for the SNES, or more specifically Carter's Super Famicom. The SuperRT chip can produce single-bounce reflections and direction light shadows, and Carter made it possible by removing the top case of the Super Famicom to make room for cabling and sacrificing an "awful Pachinko game" to allow the Super Famicom to connect into a DE10-Nano FPGA development board with a Cyclone V FPGA," which is a similar chip to the one being used for the upcoming Analogue Pocket. Update: WarnerMedia Disputes Ray Fisher’s Recent Allegations Against Walter Hamada

Update 3 - January 14 WarnerMedia's chair and CEO Ann Sarnoff has released a statement backing DC Films president Walter Hamada after Ray Fisher's recent allegations against him. According to The Hollywood Reporter, WarnerMedia issued a statement supporting Hamada, a day after Fisher posted a lengthy Twitter statement in which he reiterated his previous allegations against the DC boss. In his statement, posted on Wednesday, Fisher accused Hamada of "interfering" with the studio's investigation into the alleged workplace misconduct on the set of Joss Whedon's Justice League. "I believe in Walter Hamada and that he did not impede or interfere in the investigation," Sarnoff said in her statement. "Furthermore, I have full confidence in the investigation's process and findings. Walter is a well-respected leader, known by his colleagues, peers, and me as a man of great character and integrity. As I said in Walter's recent deal extension announcement, I'm excited about where he's taking DC Films and look forward to working with him and the rest of the team to build out the DC Multiverse." WarnerMedia touched on the Justice League investigation in a statement outside of the one that Sarnoff provided. The company said its "extensive" investigation was "conducted by an outside law firm, led by a former federal judge who has assured WarnerMedia that there were no impediments to the investigation." The company then addressed Cyborg's removal from The Flash movie. "Last summer, Mr. Fisher was offered the opportunity to reprise his role as Cyborg in The Flash," WarnerMedia said in the full statement, obtained by Variety. "Given his statement that he will not participate in any film associated with Mr. Hamada, our production is now moving on. Warner Bros. remains in business with Geoff Johns who continues to produce Stargirl, Batwoman, Doom Patrol, Superman & Lois, and Titans for the studio, among other projects." Fisher previously stated that he would no longer participate in any productions associated with Hamada. "Walter Hamada is the most dangerous kind of enabler," Fisher tweeted. "His lies, and WB PR's failed Sept. 4th hit-piece, sought to undermine the very real issues of the 'Justice League' investigation. I will not participate in any production associated with him." A week later, it was announced that Hamada had renewed his deal with DC, and would be continuing as president of the studio through to 2023. Update 2 - January 13 Ray Fisher tweeted Wednesday that Warner Bros. has officially removed him from the cast of the upcoming Flash movie. "I strongly disagree with their decision, but it is one that is unsurprising," Fisher said, adding that Cyborg's role in The Flash was meant to be larger than a mere cameo. Fisher also reiterated his allegations that DC Films president Walter Hamada protected former co-president Geoff Johns during the studio's investigation of workplace misconduct, and that Hamada allegedly spread "lies and misinformation" about Fisher. "If the end of my time as Cyborg is the cost for helping to bring awareness and accountability to Walter Hamada's actions -- I'll pay it gladly," Fisher concluded. Fisher's full statement can be read below. ErpjQAAXUAkMXaH ErpjQAAXEAAtfaa Warner Bros. has not responded to IGN's request for comment as of time of publishing. Update 1: Variety reports that DC Films president Walter Hamada has renewed his deal with DC, and will continue as president of the studio through 2023. This comes a week after Cyborg actor Ray Fisher stated that he would no longer participate in any productions associated with Hamada. Hamada was thrust into the public spotlight after Fisher accused Hamada of enabling a toxic work environment from Joss Whedon, who took over director duties on Justice League after Zack Snyder's departure. Hamada was not president of DC Films at the time of principal photography. Fisher has not yet made any comment on DC Film's decision to renew Hamada. Original story as follows: Justice League star Ray Fisher has said that he will no longer participate in any productions associated with DC Films president Walter Hamada. As reported by Variety, Fisher's response comes after WarnerMedia's investigation into allegations made by Fisher of a toxic, hostile working environment under Joss Whedon, the director of the reshoots of 2017's Justice League. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/08/22/justice-league-the-snyder-cut-trailer"] “Walter Hamada is the most dangerous kind of enabler,” Fisher tweeted. “His lies, and WB PR’s failed Sept. 4th hit-piece, sought to undermine the very real issues of the ‘Justice League’ investigation. I will not participate in any production associated with him.” Fisher also included Hamada's New York Times interview in his tweet where he discussed the future of DC films and how the upcoming Snyder Cut of the Justice League is "a storytelling cul-de-sac" with no link to DC's upcoming projects, and that Snyder is "not currently involved in the studio's future." WarnerMedia recently confirmed that the Justice League investigation was concluded and that "remedial action" had been taken over Ray Fisher's claims. WarnerMedia's third-party investigation began in August following Fisher's allegations of Whedon's toxic set and how former DC Films co-chairs Geoff Johns and Jon Berg enabled the behavior. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=justice-league-snyder-cut-all-the-known-differences-from-the-theatrical-version&captions=true"] Fisher had also previously stated that Hamada pressed him to "relent on Geoff Johns." The "failed Sept. 4th hit-piece" Fisher was referring to was WarnerMedia's response to the allegations, denial of Fisher's claims about Hamada, and statement that Fisher had refused to meet with their third-party investigator to discuss the case. Ray Fisher shot additional footage for The Snyder Cut and said that he had reshot almost all of his scenes when Joss Whedon took over, saying only a single scene of his from Snyder's original version made it into the theatrical release. A Black Hole in the Milky Way Galaxy Seemingly Changed the Color of Nearby Stars

The supermassive black hole known as Sagittarius A* in the Milky Way galaxy seemingly changed the color of nearby stars, according to astrophysicists. Sagittarius A* is the Milky Way's central black hole and an immeasurable amount of stars reside within 1.6 light-years of it, but it has less red giants stars than expected and according to a new report from Science News, astrophysicists theorize that Sagittarius A* is the culprit. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=nasa-black-hole-gallery&captions=true"] According to the theory, the black hole launched a powerful jet of gas that ripped off the outer layers of the galaxy's red giants, which saw the red part of the star removed as the star grew hotter and bluer as a result. That's the belief of Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw astrophysicist, Michal Zajaček, who published this theory on Nov. 12 in the Astrophysical Journal. There aren't any powerful jets of gas coming from Sagittarius these days, but above and below the center of the Milky Way sits two large bubbles of gamma-ray emitting gas, which is possible evidence of the powerful jet that caused red giants near it to lose their outer layer 4 million years ago. "The jet preferentially acts on large red giants," Zajaček said. "They can be effectively ablated by the jet." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2016/04/07/scientists-discover-theory-changing-supermassive-black-hole-ign-news"] Zajaček says red giant stars are more vulnerable than others to jets like this because of how large they are. These types of stars form when the center of smaller stars get so full of helium that it can no longer burn its hydrogen fuel and instead burns the hydrogen in a layer surrounding the center. This causes the star's outer layer to expand, which in turns causes the surface to cool and turn red. The resulting size makes red giants a prime target for jets like that of Sagittarius A*. As these red giants orbit Sagittarius A*, they must pass through the jet Zajaček describes hundreds or thousands of times before the outer layer is ripped away and the red becomes blue. His team calculates that the jet is most effective at ripping off the outer layer of red giants within .13 light-years of the black hole. University of California, Los Angeles astronomer, Tuan Do, says, however, that he believes it "may take a combination of several of these kinds of mechanisms to fully explain the lack of the red giants," according to Science News. He says it's likely something other than a jet that has caused the lack of red giants further away from the black hole. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2017/12/26/newly-discovered-black-hole-is-farthest-ever-found-ign-news"] Both Do and Zajaček theorize that it might be the work of a large disk of gas that circled the black hole millions of years ago. As the red giants orbited the black hole, they likely found themselves going through said disk and the disk's gas may have torn off their outer layers in the process. For more black hole science, read about the recent discovery of the black hole closest to Earth and then read about this black hole that's nine times larger than the sun that is pulling in space and time. PlayStation Plus Games for January 2021 Announced

Sony has announced that the PlayStation Plus games for January 2021 are the PS5 version of Maneater and the PS4 versions of both Shadow of the Tomb Raider and GreedFall. Revealed on PlayStation.Blog, all of these games will be available from Tuesday, January 5 through Monday, February 1, and its important to note that the PS4 version of Maneater is not available in this round of games and Maneater is not available in Saudi Arabia. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/05/22/maneater-review"] Furthermore, GreedFall is not available in the Middle East (replaced with Assetto Corsa), Japan, or South Korea (replaced with Mistover). In our review of Maneater, we said "It’s absolutely fun to play as mutant Jaws on steroids! Maneater chews the metaphorical scenery as often as it has you devouring humans and the diverse aquatic inhabitants of the Gulf of Mexico, and that’s some good dumb entertainment – for a while." In our review of Shadow of the Tomb Raider, we said "With a story that manages to satisfactorily tread the line between high-concept fun and grounded character exploration, Shadow of the Tomb Raider meaningfully wraps up the journey Lara began in 2013 and convincingly leaves her in a place resembling where she was when we were first introduced to her more than 20 years ago." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2018/09/10/shadow-of-the-tomb-raider-review"] In our review of GreedFall, we said "I enjoyed myself just about every step of the way through GreedFall’s epic, morally complex tale of exploration and swashbuckling. The Technomancer was disappointing, but I still wanted to see other games try the ambitious things it was attempting with more success - and GreedFall delivers on that promise." If you have yet to redeem the PlayStation Plus games for December 2020 - which include Just Cause 4, Worms Rumble, and Rocket Arena - you still have until January 4, 2021.
