Terminal: Margot Robbie on Her Love of Amoral Characters

In my review of Terminal, I stated that Margot Robbie had found her niche. She is a great actress, hands down. But she excels at playing amoral characters – her Best Actress nominations for her role in I, Tonya speak to this truth. Because of this, it shouldn’t come as a shock to learn that she’s drawn to characters like Harley Quinn, Tonya Harding, and Terminal’s enigmatic sociopath, Annie.

I recently got a chance to talk with Margot Robbie about her desire to take on certain roles. The conversation was enlightening. “I really love playing characters who aren’t good,” Robbie explained over the phone. “Amoral characters are far more interesting to me because they’re so unpredictable. I feel like, moral characters…I know they’re going to do the right thing and I can see

Game of Thrones Originally Pitched as ‘Shakespearian’ and ‘Biblical’

Before HBO greenlit Game of Thrones, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss pitched the fantasy series to the network as being both "Shakespearian" and "Biblical."

On the latest episode of Variety's weekly podcast Strictly Business, HBO chairman and CEO Richard Plepler discussed Benioff and Weiss' original pitch for the show, noting how the fantasy genre wasn't typically associated with the network. "David's comment to me was, 'You're nervous about this. There's dragons in it; it's fantasy. This isn't typical HBO,'" he said.

Gotham: Showrunner Says Neither Valeska Brother is the Real Joker

Now that Cameron Monaghan's psychotic Jerome has been replaced by his twin brother, Jeremiah (also Monaghan, natch), Gotham's about to face a whole new madman - one who's more reserved and plotting than his unhinged twin.

With two episodes left in Season 4, I spoke with Gotham EP/showrunner John Stephens about the "Joker" swap - the switch out that saw Jerome infect his sibling with a modified version of his madness - along with how the show's upcoming "No Man's Land" Season 5 reboot will affect Jim Gordon and the overall plans for ending the show with the arrival of Batman.

In "One Bad Day" - airing Thursday, May 10th - Jeremiah Valeska looks to detonate a series of powerful bombs all over the city. Surely, a huge destructive scheme befitting the Valeska name, but is Jeremiah a...saner version of the Joker? Stephens opened up about the choice to swap out the brothers. "Some of it was born out of the fact that we could never have the Joker-Joker character on the show," he revealed. "We wanted to try to develop a new character who could embody another element of the Joker persona. It felt like Jerome, as great as he was, had gone as far as we could go with him. So we spoke to Cameron
