Fired Walking Dead Showrunner Seeks Over $280M in Lawsuit

Frank Darabont, who developed AMC's hit television series The Walking Dead (and was the original showrunner), is moving forward with his lawsuit against the network, seeking a hefty sum from AMC that amounts to over $280 million in damages.

A certificate of trial readiness was filed on Monday, and AMC has since responded to Darabont's charges, providing The Hollywood Reporter with the following statement: "Plaintiffs' damages claim has no basis in reality and we will continue to vigorously defend against this lawsuit."

Darabont, who was fired during The Walking Dead's second season, is claiming that AMC owes him contingent profits by producing the series and then licensing it to their own cable network affiliate at a low fee -- lower than they would when paying for a show from an outside studio -- to ensure the show wouldn't make enough for those who have a stake in its profits. He also says AMC unfairly lowered his share of the profits by designating him as not fully involved in Season 2, while he insists he was involved in all of the episodes that season, in some capacity. Last year, it was said Darabont was also contending he was owed money tied to Talking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead, as derivative productions of The Walking Dead.

The Strain Will End With Season 4

The Strain has been renewed for a fourth season, which will serve as the series' last, FX Productions has announced.

Showrunner Carlton Cuse, as well as Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan will be back to steer the final chapter, which will premiere sometime next summer.

"We sincerely thank Carlton Cuse, Guillermo del Toro, Chuck Hogan, and their creative team as well as the fantastic cast for three exciting seasons of The Strain," FX original programming president Nick Grad said in a statement accompanying the announcement. "Though we’re sad to see it go, we fully support the way in which they are crafting the fourth season’s dramatic conclusion."

The Strain was originally pitched as a three-season story, but after developing the series, Cuse, del Toro, and Hogan realized they could extend the narrative a bit further. Just last month, Cuse said the end for The Strain was in sight and the team was looking at how to wrap up the series following their work on Season 3.

The History of Westworld

HBO’s new show Westworld is shaping up to be another in the cable net’s long line of great dramas, though interestingly the Jonathan Nolan/Lisa Joy-produced sci-fi series is not a new concept. In fact, the tale of a theme park populated by robots is just the latest incarnation of an idea that has already been made into two movies and a short-lived TV show over the years. It also bears mentioning that a different -- if hugely popular -- franchise was surely informed by Westworld on some level… Jurassic Park.

So with the new Westworld about to make its debut on HBO, let’s take a look back at the previous versions of this classic sci-fi story. Draw!
