Westworld Will Keep Subverting Expectations

Warning: Full spoilers for the Westworld series premiere below.

The first episode of Westworld definitely plays with audience expectations in its first few minutes, as we meet Teddy (James Marsden), a return visitor to town, who clearly has a thing for Evan Rachel Wood’s android, Dolores. But as it turns out, Teddy isn’t the human he appears to be and is in fact an android himself – one who is powerless to stop the sadistic Westworld “guest” known only as the Man in Black (Ed Harris) from murdering him and raping Dolores, in what it turns out is a tragic loop Teddy and Dolores are trapped in without their knowledge.

I spoke to Marsden about his role in Westworld and how Teddy and Dolores are unable to ever be together simply because that’s not what their programing allows. We also spoke about the scale of the show, working with executive producers J.J. Abrams, Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy and more.

Adjusted for inflation, however, most of those systems, including the NES, Sega Master System, and Nintendo 64, would almost all retail today for between $300 and $500. (A notable exception is the Atari 2600 — released in the 70's, the console would now command around a $840 price point when adjusted for inflation.) [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/09/17/ps5-price-release-date-launch-games-and-more-beyond-episode-666"] Those numbers line up largely within the price range of the last few systems that have been released — the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One's original price points would come to around $450 and $550, respectively, today, while the Switch would now cost over $300 when adjusted for inflation. Noting groups of consoles released roughly within two to three years of each other, the price differences rarely have varied outside of $100 to $200. (Notable exceptions include systems like the 3DO and Neo-Geo, which, adjusted for inflation, would cost well over $1,000.) Following the premiere of Westworld earlier this week, HBO has now made the debut episode of its new sci-fi drama series free for everyone.

Westworld boasts a top-notch cast that includes Anthony Hopkins as Dr. Robert Ford, Sidse Babett Knudsen as Theresa Cullen, Evan Rachel Wood as Dolores Abernathy, Ed Harris as The Man in Black, Rodrigo Santoro as Hector Escaton, and James Marsden as Teddy.

While the series offers a new take on Michael Crichton's 1973 film of the same name, showrunner Jonathan Nolan just recently revealed that Westworld also draws inspiration from several video games, including BioShock and Skyrim.

Skyrim, Red Dead, BioShock Inspired Westworld

In addition to being based off of Michael Crichton's original 1973 film, HBO's new drama series Westworld draws inspiration from a number of video games, including BioShock, Red Dead Redemption and Skyrim.

In an interview with VICE, Westworld showrunner Jonathan Nolan said he believes "a lot of interesting storytelling that's happening right now is in video games" and while he's never worked in game development, he's "fascinated by the concept of writing a story in which the protagonists' actions aren't part of the story."

The Flash: Flashpoint Creates a ‘Whole Different Dynamic’

Flashpoint is coming for The Flash, and big changes are afoot in the series' Season 3 premiere.

After Barry Allen changed the past and stopped Reverse-Flash from killing his mother in Season 2's finale, he created an alternate timeline where he has the happy life that was taken from him.

"When we pick up Flashpoint, Barry has everything he wants," Grant Gustin explained to IGN during a recent visit to The Flash's set. "He made this choice, consciously, and he's got Eobard locked in a cell and he's got the upper hand. It's a fun, different dynamic. ... It creates a whole different dynamic for Barry."

Snag a Mask for Halloween

Today only, Amazon's Gold Box sale is crammed full of Halloween costumes and accessories. I've broken out some of my favorites below, including a sweet (and surprisingly detailed) Night's King mask from Game of Thrones, but you should give the whole thing a browse and save yourself from last minute costume shopping or going as a lame ghost in a sheet or a poorly wrapped toilet paper mummy.
