Detroit: Become Human’s Revolution Can Become Violent

In a demo session of Detroit: Become Human at E3 today, Quantic Dream asked a simple question: How far is too far?

Like Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls before it, Detroit: Become Human is an examination of the choices we make. Every decision carries weight, and every action has consequences. How far is too far? Looking upon the burning remains of a section of the city, it’s a question worth asking.

Our demo focused on Markus, the newly-revealed third protagonist of Detroit: Become Human, another self-aware android who joins the previously-revealed playable characters Connor and Kara. Markus is a deviant, and he’s converting other androids, waking them up and recruiting them as part of his cause: he’s going to send humanity a message.

More Wii U Games on Switch Is ‘Active Discussion’

Nintendo isn’t ruling out bringing versions of more Wii U games to Nintendo Switch.

With Mario Kart 8 now officially the fastest-selling Mario Kart game and a deluxe version of Pokken Tournament on the way, we asked Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime if he sees this as an opportunity to give more Wii U games a second life on Nintendo’s new portable console.

“The internal conversations we have is that on one hand, the development teams would love to showcase their content to a wider base, and certainly in short order the install base on Nintendo Switch will be larger than the install base we ended with Wii U,” Fils-Aime told IGN.

“So there is that opportunity. What also drives the discussion, though is ‘what more will there be?’ Meaning, let’s take Mario Kart 8 Deluxe as an example," he continued. "It needed to be the definitive version of that software for the consumer to be as excited as they are. Pokken Tournament DX with the additional fighters, the additional Pokemon, that was important for it to be an element of the game. What we are internally resisting is just a pure port, versus thinking about how not only do we showcase a game to a wider audience, but how do we make sure that there’s something more? So it’s an active discussion.”

Could Ubisoft Return to Prince of Persia, Splinter Cell?

Though Ubisoft has announced a host of new entries in some of its major franchises, the studio isn't opposed to revisiting others, like Splinter Cell and Prince of Persia, that haven't been seen in several years.

Speaking to IGN during E3 as part of a larger discussion of Ubisoft's Canadian studios, Ubisoft Montreal CEO Yannis Mallat said the company is open to revisiting dormant franchises given the right ideas.

"I like to think of the studio as a huge...creative collective. So, if some of the creative comes to us and says 'Hey, by the way, I have this crazy idea' about a brand that we haven't done anything with for many years, we will listen," Mallat said.

Metal Gear Survive Doesn’t Understand the Series’ Strengths

No one really asked for Metal Gear Survive. The base-building, wave-based co-op survival game is a major departure from the tactical espionage action that has earned the series such critical acclaim over the years, and without a riveting story directed by Hideo Kojima and team’s unique brand of weird, it just doesn’t feel right. But even with my fangirl gripes, my 30 minute session with this odd spin-off’s four-player co-op wasn’t as bad as I feared it would be — it just wasn't very interesting.

This admittedly early build still felt a little unbalanced and stiff, but the squad dynamic and loadout customization have the potential to create some fun multiplayer moments. I just can’t shake the feeling that other Metal Gear games, including Metal Gear Online, have already nailed most of these same elements, but better.

Why Nintendo Revealed Metroid Prime 4 So Early

Nintendo carefully considers a lot of factors before it makes an announcement. While some major products like the Switch itself have a short turnaround between reveal and release, others like the recently-unveiled Metroid Prime 4 make sense to announce earlier in the development cycle.

IGN spoke to Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime at E3 this week about holding news versus sharing it, and why some games can be shown earlier than others.

“You know, for us, we believe that having hands-on opportunity married to an announcement is really the best way to do it,” Fils-Aime told IGN. “And so let’s take Super Mario Odyssey for example. We could have announced it months ago, but we weren’t yet ready, the team wasn’t ready, to show it and to let the consumer really understand visually how the hat mechanic works, how the capture mechanic comes into play. And so that’s how we think these through.”
