Assassin’s Creed Origins Is the Exploration-Focused Future of the Franchise
Assassin’s Creed Origins is the most open world Assassin’s Creed game Ubisoft has ever created. It stretches and pushes the boundaries of a historical sandbox, fundamentally restructures the way missions are delivered and played, and places an almost singular focus on exploration and discovery.
Origins may be the beginning of the series from a chronological and story standpoint, but from what I’ve seen behind the scenes, its emphasis on open exploration and freedom is creating the future of the franchise.
The first and most prominent change coming to Origins is its fast and loose quest system. In previous Assassin’s Creed games you would have main missions, which in their function were an icon on the map that would trigger a unique encounter with exclusion zones, out of bound areas, and failure conditions that you could only get out of by backing out to the menu.
How to Take Great Photos of the Solar Eclipse, Even With Your Phone
There’s a total solar eclipse in the continental United States on August 21st, for the first time in nearly 40 years. The moon will block out the sun for almost three minutes for the regions that are in the direct path of totality, making things as dark as nighttime during the day. Even those who aren’t in regions where the eclipse is in full force, partial eclipses are uniquely awesome and will be viewable across the entire country, too.
Doctor Who: David Tennant ‘Not Shocked’ By Uproar
Since the announcement that Jodie Whittaker would be taking over from Peter Capaldi as the new lead of the BBC's long-running sci-fi Doctor Who, the Internet has been rife with discussion over the decision to cast a woman as the Doctor for the first time in the show's near-54 year history.
While many have welcomed the casting as a progressive step forward for the show, there has been a vocal minority that has strongly opposed the idea - and no one is less surprised than former Doctor David Tennant.
As Vulture reports, Tennant appeared on The Late Show earlier this week, where the topic of Whittaker's casting came up, revealing that he faced his own kind of backlash when taking over from Christoper Ecclestone - his 'weaselly face' being one point of particular concern - and sharing that he thinks it's par for the course with a new actor inhabiting such an iconic role - "whenever the Doctor changes there’s a backlash because that’s a character that people love, so people get very affectionate about the Doctor they knew".
Learn the Full Story of Doctor Who in America
In the upcoming book Red White and Who: The Story of Doctor Who in America from ATB Publishing, the history of the classic British sci-fi series in the U.S. (and Canada) is traced all the way back to the 1960s. Most American fans of the original show (that is, the pre-2005 Christopher Eccleston relaunch version) first learned of Doctor Who via PBS airings in the 1980s. But the full story of the most famous Time Lord's journey in America started years earlier.
Red White and Who, which will be released on August 21, 2017, is a full color, 704-page work with over 600 images. The book is currently available to pre-order (with free US shipping on all orders placed before August 21), but you can take a peak inside with the following gallery of exclusive images from the title:
Justice League Has a “More Traditional Batman” Than BvS
Batman is a lot more traditional in Justice League than he was in Batman vs. Superman, according to Ben Affleck.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Affleck revealed that the reason why BvS slightly departed from the Batman people have known and loved is because he was filled with rage.
The superhero was angry at Superman and all of his co-workers dying in the beginning of the film, so viewers never got the chance to witness a more heroic Dark Knight.
“He was holding on to a lot of anger, in a little bit of an irrational way,” said Affleck. However, in Justice League Batman is finally doing "things in his own way," and "wants to save people, help people.”
Pokemon Go: 2 Million Players Played Pikachu Outbreak Event
Pokemon Go's Japan-only Pikachu Outbreak event garnered 2 million players in its 7 day duration, with over 120 million Pokemon caught.
Niantic provided details of the Yokohama event - which introduced new Shiny Pokemon and the long-awaited Mewtwo - after it closed.
Held in Yokohama, the event turned kilometers of real-life spaces into Pokemon Go Park, and finished with thousands of trainers competing at Pokemon Go Stadium, attempting to capture Mewtwo to a backdrop of fireworks and giant Pokemon projections.
WWE 2K18: First 47 Playable Superstars Announced
You know what they say about WWE superstars: you wait a whole year for a bunch of new playable ones to be announced and then 47 come along at once! I mean, nobody actually says that but that doesn’t matter because today we’re bringing you the first of many WWE 2K18 roster announcements and we’re starting with what is known in the business as “some absolute bangers” (you can see a full list at the bottom of the story).
WWE and IGN have partnered exclusively to bring you 4 huge roster reveal shows over the coming weeks. In the first episode, WWE’s Renee Young and WWE Raw commentator Corey Graves are joined by the delightfully weird (and playable) superstar Goldust to reveal the first 47 superstars that you can go toe-to-toe with in WWE 2K18.
The Skaven Are Coming to Total War: Warhammer 2
The fourth playable race, the Skaven, will be part of Total War: Warhammer 2 when it releases next month.
The Skaven join the High Elves, Dark Elves and Lizardmen, already announced for the game.
The Ratmen, as they are sometimes known, are led by warlord Queek Headtaker and Lord Skrolk, and are a "highly numerous species who inhabit vast subterranean lairs," coming to the surface to "spread pestilence and mayhem."
Total War: Warhammer 2 was announced back in March, with three of the four races revealed as part of the announcement. Players who own the original Total War: Warhammer will receive a huge map combining areas from the old and the new games.
Underworld Director Joins X-Men TV Series
Underworld director Len Wiseman has joined FOX's upcoming X-Men TV series The Gifted.
Deadline reports Wiseman will serve as an executive producer and will direct the show's second episode, “A New World."
Wiseman will be teaming up with The Gifted creator/showrunner Matt Nix once again, as the duo executive produced the Fox drama A.P.B. Wiseman also recently served as executive producer on FOX's Lucifer and Sleepy Hollow.
The Gifted is set to premiere on October 2, with the pilot being directed by Bryan Singer. It follows the story of two ordinary parents (True Blood's Stephen Moyer and Person of Interest's Amy Acker) who find out their children have mutant powers. The family are forced to run from a hostile government and join an underground network of mutants who are fighting for survival.
