PS5 Had the Biggest Console Launch Month in U.S. History

The PlayStation 5 was November 2020's best-selling hardware platform in consumer spending, and it had the highest launch month unit and dollar sales for a video game hardware platform in U.S. history, breaking the previous record held by PlayStation 4 in November 2013. As reported by The NPD Group's Mat Piscatella, even though the PS5 broke those records, the Nintendo Switch was still the best-selling hardware platform in November 2020 in units sold, extending its streak for a record 24 consecutive month. As for Xbox Series X/S, even though they did not set any records, Piscatella notes that they also "immediately and completely sold out." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/12/11/call-of-duty-cold-war-warzone-season-one-trailer"] As far as games, Call of Duty: Black Ops: Cold War was November 2020's best-selling game, and has already become the best-selling game of 2020 year-to-date, beating out Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. This is the 13th consecutive year that a Call of Duty game has been the best-selling game of its launch month. In November 2007, Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock surpassed Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare's sales to take the #1 spot. Assassin's Creed Valhalla took the number two spot and achieved the highest launch month sales for an Assassin's Creed game since Assassin's Creed III in 2012. Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales followed at number three and had the second highest launch month sales of any superhero game on PlayStation platforms in U.S. history, trailing only behind Marvel's Spider-Man. The full list of November 2020's top 20 best-selling games is as follows; [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/12/08/ps5-reviews-one-month-later-the-review-crew"]

The Callisto Protocol Is Set in the PUBG Universe

The Callisto Protocol - the new sci-fi horror from the creator of Dead Space - is definitely set in the universe of PUBG. We just don't quite know how right now. Announced at The Game Awards 2020, The Callisto Protocol comes from Glen Schofield and his new studio Striking Distance, a developer set up specifically to create a "narrative experience" within the world of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds. However, when the Callisto Protocol was shown off, the game looked far more like Dead Space than PUBG. However, speaking to IGN, a spokesperson for Striking Distance confirmed that the game is indeed that same narrative experience, and connected to PUBG - but wouldn't say exactly how. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/12/11/the-callisto-protocol-announcement-trailer"] That connection could be very interesting - PUBG's background narrative has gotten increasingly in-depth over time (including an appearance from Jonathan Frakes among many other things), but Callisto Protocol is set on one of Jupiter's moons in the year 2320, whereas the battle royale is based around the story of a multi-billionaire that organises mercenary battles in his razed fictional homeland. This could be an interesting one to explain. We've definitely spotted some Dead Space connections in the new game, and we've also had thoughts about how to turn PUBG into a narrative game - but neither crosses over quite yet. We'll let you know more as soon as we find it out. The Callisto Protocol was one of many, many new announcements last night - here's everything announced and revealed at The Game Awards 2020. Fall Guys Season 3 Exclusive: New Level Tundra Run Revealed

IGN's very happy to be able to reveal a brand new level coming to Fall Guys in Season 3 - welcome to Tundra Run. Adding to Fall Guys' set of races, this is a rush to qualify by crossing the finish line, but offers perhaps one of the cruellest obstacle courses in the game so far. You can check out a gameplay video below: [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/12/11/fall-guys-season-3-exclusive-tundra-run-level-reveal"] Tundra Run offers major choices about how to proceed through it, each with pros and cons. In all, the level will have you:
  • Climbing a narrow, chicaning hill while trying to avoid growing, cannon-fired snowballs.
  • Passing through a set of presents that fire giant boxing gloves (or creeping around the narrow ledges behind them.
  • Climbing a steep hill, assisted by a fan.
  • Jumping over a set of boxing glove presents, or crossing longer, icy, obstacle strewn paths around them.
  • Climbing a hill covered in pinball-like flippers that shoot you backwards through the level, while a moving fan also blows you back down.
  • Using a set of flippers to reach small floating flippers, which also feature flippers to send you over the obstacle-guarded finishing line (or plummeting to your doom).
[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/08/06/fall-guys-ultimate-knockout-review"] It is, quite frankly, a mean-looking race, and seems to be another step up in the skill levels required after players have mastered the Season 1 and 2 stages. Tundra Run marks one of a several new levels being added in the Winter-themed Season 3 - and stick with IGN for more exclusive drops of the new content. The Acolyte: Star Wars Mystery Thriller Series Sparks Darth Plagueis Theories

The Acolyte, Leslye Headland's mysterious new Star Wars series, has sparked some theories about Darth Plagueis and the Sith Order. During the Disney Investor Day presentation on Thursday, Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy shared a few details about Leslye Headland's upcoming Star Wars project, The Acolyte. While plot specifics were not given for the female-centric Disney+ series, Kennedy revealed that the "mystery thriller" focuses on the "shadowy secrets and emergent dark side powers in the final days of the High Republic era." [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=every-upcoming-star-wars-movie&captions=true"] The High Republic era, which is going to be explored further in Lucasfilm's multi-pronged publishing initiative, takes place hundreds of years before the Skywalker saga. The Acolyte is set in the "final days" of this era, so fans have been speculating over which characters might make an appearance in the new series, with some even wondering whether we could see a live-action debut from Darth Plagueis. As noted by Den of Geek, Plageuis was born sometime between 147 and 120 BBY in the classic Legends continuity, making him at least 20 years old during this era, which ended in 100 BBY. Even though it's unclear how this matches up with Disney canon, fans expressed their excitement over the prospect of seeing more of Plagueis' origins and the rumblings of the Sith leading into the prequels. By definition, an acolyte is a person who "assists a member of the clergy in a liturgical service by performing minor duties," which could refer to the Jedi or those who possess the "emergent dark side powers." Whether that's Plagueis or the Sith remains to be seen, but we do know that there are plenty of other challenges and enemies present during this period, including the Drengir and the Nihil. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/02/27/star-wars-the-high-republic-explained"] The opening crawl for the upcoming High Republic publishing initiative provided fans with an early insight into the state of the galaxy during this era. The text teased a time of peace, hope, and prosperity in a "magnificent renaissance" that becomes endangered by a "frightening new adversary" who threatens to disrupt the harmony of the Jedi heroes. If you want to learn more about this largely unexplored period, read our explainer about Star Wars' ever-growing mythos. Mass Effect: Multiple Members of Original Trilogy Dev Team Back for New Sequel

Multiple members of the teams that worked on the original Mass Effect Trilogy have returned to BioWare and are working on the new installment in the series officially announced last night at The Game Awards. On Twitter, Mass Effect Project Director Mike Gamble singled out narrative designer Dusty Everman (Mass Effect 1, 2, 3, Andromeda) and Parrish Ley (Mass Effect 1, 2, 3) as two of those who had left BioWare, and returned to work on the new Mass Effect project. Gamble adds that "there are more" ex-Bioware developers returning for the new game, and explains "We've heard what Mass Effect means to you." While they've remained at BioWare, Gamble also points out that original Mass Effect art director Derek Watts, and programmer/designer Brenon Holmes are part of the new team. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/12/11/mass-effect-new-installment-announcement-trailer"] After the less well-received Mass Effect: Andromeda, and departure of BioWare general manager and Mass Effect director Casey Hudson, the future of Mass Effect could have been seen to be moving in something of an unknown direction, with a new team in place. Gamble appears to be attempting to counter that assumption by showing the direct line between teams on the much-loved original trilogy and new game. That's held up somewhat by the appearance of the Mass Effect Trilogy's Liara T'Soni in the teaser trailer for the new game. BioWare has already stated that the next Mass Effect game will have a "veteran team". Mass Effect was one of many, many new announcements last night - here's everything announced and revealed at The Game Awards 2020. CD Projekt Red Stock Drops 29% Around Cyberpunk 2077 Launch

Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red has seen its stock price fall in the days around the game’s launch, with a steep decline of 29%. As reported by Gamesindustry.biz, shares are currently priced at PLN (Polish złoty) 313.9, down from PLN 443 on December 4. The decline is likely due to the release and press coverage revealing that Cyberpunk 2077 suffers from a plethora of bugs and glitches, and has notably poor performance on previous generation consoles. Such issues have spread widely via social media. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/12/10/why-cyberpunk-2077-should-not-get-a-pass-on-last-gens-failures"] Share prices appear to have dropped since the embargo on reviews was lifted. A few days later, the release of the game did little to counterbalance the fall, with shares on December 10 slipping from PLN 390.6 to PLN 362. That’s a 7.3% decrease. CD Projekt Red experienced an all-time high in share price back in August, with a share price of PLN 460.8 and a total market cap of 42.5 billion złoty. Overtime that has declined around the announcement of major issues, such as the reports of the studio enforcing mandatory crunch and a delay for Cyberpunk 2077. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=cyberpunk-2077-pc-gameplay-screenshots&captions=true"] While stock may have declined, CD Projekt Red has generated a huge amount of sales for Cyberpunk 2077; the game sold eight million copies before it even released. With over one million concurrent users on day one, it was Steam’s highest peak for a single player game.
