Peter Jackson’s Favorite Lord of the Rings Scene Wasn’t Made by Him

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy director Peter Jackson has revealed that his favorite scene from the three films was not written or directed by him. As reported by IndieWire (via The Independent), Jackson was speaking to Stephen Colbert and was asked to pick his favorite scene. While there are many iconic choices, it wasn't Helm's Deep, it wasn't Sam helping Frodo climb Mount Doom, but it was Gollum's monologue where he was having a conversation with himself as Sméagol from The Two Towers. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2014/12/22/ranking-peter-jacksons-lord-of-the-rings-and-hobbit-movies"] “We were shooting ‘Two Towers’ and it was introducing Gollum,” Jackson said. “A key thing with Gollum is that most people know he’s Sméagol and he’s Gollum, it’s like a split. But we hadn’t got a scene where you really got the idea of it…‘This guy is two people.’ So we knew that we needed it but we had no time to shoot it.” Jackson was busy with other parts of production at the time, and had asked his co-writer and co-producer Fran Walsh to create this scene where the two halves of Gollum were interacting with each other. Not only did Walsh write the scene, she also went on to direct it. “Fran wrote a scene where Sam and Frodo are asleep, so they can be just lumps in the bed, we don’t even have to have Elijah [Wood] and Sean [Astin],” Jackson said. “We didn’t have anyone to direct it, so I said to Fran, ‘You wrote it, you should shoot it.’ So she went in for a day and she wrote and directed a scene which has become pretty famous now.” [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=amazons-the-lord-of-the-rings-every-confirmed-actor&captions=true"] Jackson was out helping promote the 4K released of both The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and The Hobbit, both of which we included in our Best Gifts for Movie Lovers for 2020. Justice League: Snyder Cut May Get an R-Rated Theatrical Release

While Zack Snyder's Justice League will be making its debut on HBO Max in 2021, Snyder himself thinks it might get a R-rated theatrical release - complete with "an F-bomb-dropping Batman." As reported by EW, Snyder began discussing how he is sure that his cut of the Justice League would get an R-rating if it were to make its way to theaters. "Here's one piece of information nobody knows: The movie is insane and so epic and is probably rated R — that's one thing I think will happen, that it will be an R-rated version, for sure," Snyder told EW. "We haven't heard from the MPAA, but that's my gut." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/08/22/justice-league-the-snyder-cut-trailer"] When asked why it would receive a R-rating, Snyder explained that one of the biggest reasons was due to the previously mentioned F-bomb by the Dark Knight himself and more. "There's one scene where Batman drops an F-bomb. Cyborg is not too happy with what's going on with his life before he meets the Justice League, and he tends to speak his mind. And Steppenwolf is pretty much just hacking people in half. So [the rating would be due to] violence and profanity, probably both." As for making the theatrical release a reality, Snyder had previously said that it is his preference to also have a "big-screen rollout" for Justice League, and that steps are being taken to make that happen, although no decision has been made one way or the other. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=justice-league-snyder-cut-trailer-screenshots&captions=true"] "I'm a huge fan and a big supporter of the cinematic experience, and we're already talking about Justice League playing theatrically at the same time it's coming to HBO Max," Snyder says. "So weirdly, it's the reverse [of the trend]." This trend he was speaking of is Warner Bros.' decision to release every one of its 2021 films on HBO Max the same time they are released in theaters. Snyder also discussed his feeling on the move, as Christopher Nolan and Denis Villeneuve did before him. "It felt like a pretty bold move and that maybe the implication wasn't 100 percent thought out," he says. "I feel like there's a lot of people panicking during COVID. I hope that, in the end, that's what this was — some sort of knee-jerk to COVID and not some sort of greater move to disrupt the theatrical experience. I thought we were kind of already getting very close to the ideal theatrical window where you still had marketing material out there and you hadn't forgotten about the film by the time it came out on DVD or streaming. I thought we were starting to hone in on that sweet spot, but this kind of throws a monkey wrench in the works." Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Patch Fixes Many Quest Bugs, Improves Performance

Assassin's Creed Valhalla's Title Update 1.1.0 will arrive tomorrow, December 15, and includes fixes for a lot of quest bugs and improves performance of the game on all platforms. As revealed on Ubisoft.com, Title Update 1.1.0 will fix over 30 Quest, World Event, and Side Activity issues, many that would prevent players from proceeding due to glitches and problems. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/11/16/is-assassins-creed-valhalla-the-best-in-the-franchise-the-review-crew-ep-1"] Many of the issues being fixed are related to characters not appearing in the right places, allies not helping Eivor opening doors at certain points, bosses getting stuck underground or not progressing to their next phase, certain weapons not being able to perform heavy attacks, and so much more. In addition, Title Update 1.1.0 tweaks NPC power level behavior, addresses some specific actions that would cause freezes, fixed graphics and clipping issues, and, perhaps most importantly, will make sure NPCs will cut wheat instead of the air when farming. In addition to bug fixes, this new update will bring support for both the Settlement expansion and the Yule Festival. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=every-ign-assassins-creed-review&captions=true"] Assassin's Creed Valhalla was released alongside Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 and, in our review, we said "is a big, bold, and ridiculously beautiful entry to the series that finally delivers on the much-requested era of the Viking and the messy, political melting pot of England’s Dark Ages." Mortal Kombat, Tom & Jerry Movies Get New 2021 Release Dates

Warner Bros. has announced new release dates for the Mortal Kombat movie and the new Tom & Jerry movie. Mortal Kombat will open Wednesday, April 16, 2021, in theaters and, in the U.S.-only, on HBO Max the same day. Warner Bros. also released a brand new poster and logo for the movie on Monday in a press release. Meanwhile, Tom & Jerry moves up a week to February 26. It's likely a response to Disney's news this past week that their new animated movie, Raya and the Last Dragon, is set for March 5, which would've put it up against Tom & Jerry. [caption id="attachment_2452684" align="aligncenter" width="1200"]A new logo and poster for the upcoming live-action Mortal Kombat movie. A new logo and poster for the upcoming live-action Mortal Kombat movie.[/caption] Warner Bros. announced that its entire 2021 movie slate will debut in theaters and on HBO Max. In the weeks since, Christopher Nolan and Denis Villeneuve have publicly criticized the move in their own separate statements. Villeneuve directed one of the movies that will be going to HBO Max, Dune, and he wrote a statement in Variety to voice his displeasure. "My team and I devoted more than three years of our lives to make [Dune] a unique big screen experience," Villeneuve said. "Our movie’s image and sound were meticulously designed to be seen in theaters. I’m speaking on my own behalf, though I stand in solidarity with the sixteen other filmmakers who now face the same fate." Villeneuve also said that he was not aware of WarnerMedia's decision ahead of time. Not only did he find out in the news, but he saw images from Dune being used to promote the announcement. One of the producers of the Mortal Kombat movie also said as recently as November that they wouldn't even release a Mortal Kombat trailer until more movie theaters open. Hasbro Reveals New Bo-Katan and Baby Yoda Figures for Mando Monday

Another Mando Monday has arrived, which means Hasbro is offering a sneak peek at some upcoming Star Wars figures inspired by the current season of The Mandalorian. That includes a brand new figure depicting Clone Wars fan-favorite Bo-Katan Kryze based on her very first live-action appearance. Check out the slideshow gallery below to get a closer look at Bo-Katan, along with a new lineup of Baby Yoda merch and some long-awaited rereleases in the Star Wars: The Black Series Archive line: [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=the-mandalorians-bo-katan-kryze-gets-the-action-figure-she-deserves&captions=true"] Not counting Din Djarin and Grogu, Bo-Katan is the first Black Series figure inspired directly by The Mandalorian: Season 2. The new figure features a very accurate likeness of actress Katee Sackhoff, who finally made her live-action debut in the role after voicing Bo-Katan in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels. If you're so inclined, the figure also comes with an alternate, helmeted head. With Hasbro recently revealing new Ahsoka Tano toys inspired by both The Clone Wars and Rebels, we can only assume a Mandalorian version modeled after actress Rosario Dawson is high on Hasbro's priority list for 2021. Along with this new reveal, Hasbro is also teasing the next four additions to its Black Series Archive line. These figures are re-releases of older, harder to find Black Series toys. This particular wave looks to be targeting the army builders in the collecting world, as it includes three Rogue One troopers (the Deathtrooper, the Shoretrooper and the Hovertank Driver) as well as a Tusken Raider. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/12/04/the-mandalorian-season-2-why-ahsoka-tano-is-hunting-grand-admiral-thrawn"] Finally, and not at all surprisingly, Hasbro will be releasing new baby Yoda toys in the months ahead. This week the company is teasing a second series of Bounty Collection figurines, which feature cutesy, two-inch version of Grogu in various adorable poses, and a new plushy that can be folded inside out to form a hover pram. Hasbro's previous Mando Monday reveals have included a life-size Din Djarin helmet and a line of retro figures inspired by the classic Kenner toys of old. Chris Pine to Star in New Dungeons & Dragons Movie

Wonder Woman 1984 and Star Trek's Chris Pine is in talks to star in Paramount and eOne's Dungeons & Dragons feature film. As reported by THR, Spider-Man: Homecoming's Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley are set to direct the feature that is based on the popular role-playing game owned by Wizards of the Coast. Goldstein and Daley also wrote the latest version of the script that was based off a previous draft by Michael Gilio. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/02/19/chris-pratt-and-tom-holland-want-to-start-an-avengers-cast-dungeons-and-dragons-party"] No plot details were given for this new Dungeons & Dragon movie, but it will be the first feature film based on the property since Jeremy Irons' starred in New Line's adaptation in 2000. The film rights for Dungeons & Dragons have been at the center of legal battles for many years, and a 2015 settlement appeared to make it possible for Warner Bros. to take control. Ansel Elgort was in early talks to star. Things have changed since Paramount struck a production and distribution deal with Hasbro, who is the owner of Wizards of the coast, and this news gives a bit more clarity as to their plans. Former Marvel Studios executive Jeremy Latcham is onboard as producer for eOne, and it is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 27, 2022 following delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=every-delayed-movie-due-to-coronavirus-so-far&captions=true"] In our review of 2000's Dungeons & Dragons, we said "if making a movie is akin to running a marathon, then Dungeons & Dragons is like an infant trying to crawl. This film truly gives the already legendary Battlefield Earth legitimate competition as the worst, most inept big-budget movie released by a major studio in recent memory. Though it doesn't have Battlefield Earth's extra camp factors (the Scientology connection, Travolta), it may well actually be even worse. Quite an achievement." The Office Seasons 1-2 Free on Peacock, Seasons 3-9 Under Paywall

The Office is headed to Peacock in 2021, but fans will be able to sample the series on its new home without having to fork over a monthly fee. NBCUniversal has revealed the first two seasons of the hit sitcom will be available on Peacock's free tier. Seasons 3-9 of The Office will be exclusive to Peacock Premium, which is available in ad-supported form for $4.99 per month and ad-free for $9.99 per month. Also exclusive to Peacock Premium are "Superfan Episodes," special extended cuts of various episodes from Seasons 3-9 that feature previously deleted scenes and other new footage. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=everything-coming-to-nbcuniversals-peacock&captions=true"] Peacock has revealed other The Office bonus content that will be available when the series hits Peacock on January 1, 2021. Spanish-language audio and subtitles will be included, as will various behind-the-scenes featurettes, interviews and blooper reels. Peacock will also feature themed playlists of episode clips geared around Jim's best Dwight pranks, Michael Scott's various words of wisdom and the series' most memorable romantic moments. Fans can even stream a special Office Zen channel, a continuous stream of office-related ambient noise deigned to make the workday go a little bit faster. Peacock launched in July 2020, though without The Office, which remains on Netflix until the end of 2020, or the 2020 Summer Olympics, which was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Those key omissions were part of the reason IGN's David Griffin gave Peacock a 6 out of 10 in his review, saying, "There’s little doubt that most, if not all of these technical and interface shortcomings will be fixed in future updates, but it’s still disappointing to see a prestigious company like NBCUniversal fail to provide some of the basic features we’ve come to expect from a modern-day streaming platform at launch." Though to be fair, Peacock was hardly the only new streaming service to struggle in 2020. Quibi has already shut down completely, and HBO Max has seen sluggish growth in its first year. However, the recent news that many 2021 Warner Bros. films will debut on HBO Max and in theaters simultaneously should give that particular service a boost. On the other hand, that surprise move has already drawn the wrath of directors and theater chains alike, with Christopher Nolan slamming HBO Max as "the worst streaming service." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/08/08/peacock-streaming-service-review"] In other The Office news, Netflix recently made the call to edit a episode, removing a controversial blackface scene from Season 9's "Dwight's Christmas." That edit has the support of creator Greg Daniels and is expected to carry over to Peacock's library. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Jesse is a mild-mannered staff writer for IGN. "With the inclusion of diverse filmmakers, we are not trying to set records but rather to set the record straight by spotlighting the astonishing contributions women and people of colour have made to American cinema, despite facing often-overwhelming hurdles," Carla Hayden, the Librarian of Congress, said in a statement alongside the announcement. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=ranking-the-batman-movies&captions=true"] "This is not only a great honour for all of us who worked on The Dark Knight, this is also a tribute to all of the amazing artists and writers who have worked on the great mythology of Batman over the decades," added Christopher Nolan, the director of The Dark Knight, in respect of his entry into the National Film Registry this year. Following on the heels of Batman Begins, The Dark Knight quickly became one of the most hyped movies of the past decade. Helped by its amazing viral marketing campaign, the sequel quickly took on legendary status as the summer's most anticipated movie. Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Partner on Commitment to Safer Gaming

Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo have partnered together in an effort to protect the safety of their players in our connected and socially-focused world. Announced on Xbox Wire, Corporate Vice President of Xbox Operations Dave McCarthy discussed how he and the team believe that "gaming is for all people of all ages, including our youngest and most vulnerable players." However, protecting players online is not an easy task and "requires a multidisciplinary approach" that is only enhanced when working together with the likes of Nintendo and PlayStation. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/09/24/the-best-xbox-one-games-fall-2020-update"] "At Xbox, we are aligned with both Nintendo, on behalf of the community of Nintendo Switch players, and PlayStation in our belief that protecting players online requires a multidisciplinary approach – one that combines the benefits of advanced technology, a supportive community, and skilled human oversight," McCarthy wrote. "We can accomplish more when we work toward the same goal, and so we will each continue investing in, evolving, and amplifying our approaches to user safety. As we continue this work, we will prioritize protecting the safety of our players, especially those most vulnerable." McCarthy also discussed the principles that guide their work towards this safer future for gamers around the world, and they are as follows; Prevention: Empower players and parents to understand and control gaming experiences.
  • We provide controls that let players customize their gaming experience.  We support parents with the tools and information necessary to create appropriate gaming experiences for their children.
  • We recognize that for safety features to be useful, they must be easy to use. We will promote the availability of our safety tools through our platforms, support channels, services, on our websites and in retail stores to reach more players and parents.
  • We continually inform our parents and players through our codes of conduct, terms of use, and our enforcement practices.
  • We invest in technology to help thwart improper conduct and content before a player is subject to harm.
[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/11/24/the-best-nintendo-switch-games-fall-2020-update"] Partnership: We commit to partnering with the industry, regulators, law enforcement, and our communities to advance user safety.
  • The industry’s commitment to safety is central. We believe that we have an opportunity to collaborate for the benefit of the video game industry and all players to offer a safer gaming experience.
  • We work with industry trade organizations, industry members, regulators, law enforcement, and experts to develop and advance online safety initiatives.
  • We commit to conducting shared research for the benefit of the industry.
  • We believe that hate and harassment or exploitation of younger players in any way have no place in gaming. We partner with our community to promote safe gaming behavior and encourage the use of reporting tools to call out bad actors.
  • We partner with ratings agencies such as the ESRB and PEGI to ensure that our games are rated for the appropriate audience.
Responsibility: We hold ourselves accountable for making our platforms as safe as possible for all players.
  • We make it easy for players to report violations of our code of conduct and, in addition to removing content, we take appropriate enforcement actions for violations, including restricting players from using our services for misconduct.
  • We comply with all local laws and will respond to all lawful requests from law enforcement. We promptly notify law enforcement if we observe unlawful conduct or where we believe a player is at risk of imminent harm.
  • We publish our rules and requirements and we ensure that players who have been reported understand the requirements for continued engagement with our platforms.
[widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=the-best-ps5-games&captions=true"] In closing, McCarthy writes that protecting players is a challenge, especially in a "digitally and often instantaneously connected world." This partnership was forged in hopes to make that battle easier won, as "no one company or industry will solve these challenges alone." This isn't the first time these companies have worked together to help create a brighter future for video games, as just last year Sony and Microsoft teamed up to improve cloud gaming and streaming platforms.
