Magic: The Gathering Returns to Comics in April 2021

If you enjoy the lore and characters of Magic: The Gathering as much as the game itself, then you'll be pleased to hear the long-running franchise is returning to the comic book arena in 2021. Publisher BOOM! Studios has struck a new deal with Wizards of the Coast and parent company Hasbro to produce a new line of Magic: The Gathering comics, beginning with an ongoing monthly series simply titled Magic. Magic's creative team includes writer Jed MacKay (Black Cat), artist Ig Guara (Ghost-Spider), colorist Arianna Consonni and letterer Ed Dukeshire. You can get an exclusive first look at the covers to Magic #1 and Guara's character designs in the slideshow gallery below: [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=magic-the-gathering-returns-to-comics-in-april-2021&captions=true"] The series opens in the realm of Ravnica, whose planet-sized city is rocked by assassination attempts against three Guildmasters, Ral Zarek, Vraska, and Kaya. The trio will be forced to put aside their differences and travel to the plane of Zendikar to hunt the assassins. Boom is teasing a climactic showdown with a major Magic: The Gathering character. “Twenty-five years ago when I was digging through the commons and uncommons bin to build my first deck, I would never have thought that one day I would be handed the reins to the Magic: The Gathering comic, but here we are!” said MacKay in the publisher's press release. “I'm extremely psyched to be digging into the world of MAGIC and all that entails, and can't wait for all of you to see what we've been cooking up for you!” “It is amazing to be able to tell a story in the universe of a game I have been playing for over 20 years! I battled the Affinity deck and watched the Phyrexian take over Mirrodin,” said Guara. “I was actually finishing a new Commander deck when the proposal came so you can imagine just how excited I am to be working on this series, and bringing this world alive for fans everywhere!” The Magic franchise has made its home at several different comic book publishers over the years. Most recently, IDW Publishing released several Magic: The Gathering limited series between 2011 and 2018. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/09/23/5-things-you-need-to-know-about-magic-the-gathering-arena"] Magic #1 will release in April 2021. The issue features cover art by Matteo Scalera (Black Science), with variant covers by Guara, InHyuk Lee (Miles Morales: Spider-Man), and Junggeun Yoon (Seven Secrets). The first issue also features a series of Hidden Planeswalker variant covers by artists Miguel Mercado (Mighty Morphin), Taj Tenfold (Abbott), and Magdalena Pagowska (The Library of Esoterica), each spotlighting a different iconic Magic character. Additionally, Boom will offer a "Magic pack" collector bundle that includes the main cover, an exclusive variant by Mirka Andolfo (Mercy). one of the Hidden Planeswalker covers and a blank sketch cover. This is just the latest big release in the Magic: The Gathering line. Recently we learned Wizards of the Coast is releasing a series of cards painted by none other than PBS mainstay Bob Ross, and those cards may be added to Magic: The Gathering Arena in the near future. We also learned Dungeons & Dragons will be getting its own Magic the Gathering set in Q3 2021. Beyond the card game itself, Magic is also headed to Netflix, as Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo are overseeing a new animated series. Several Magic players among the IGN staff weighed in on why this adaptation is such a big deal. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Jesse is a mild-mannered staff writer for IGN. We'll be hosting the Resident Evil Village livestream on our channels across a variety of platforms including YouTube, Twitch, Facebook, and Twitter. Here’s the full list of places you can watch the Resident Evil Showcase:

What Kind of Resident Evil Village News to Expect

As we shared above, you can expect a new trailer, a first-look at gameplay, a guided tour of the village, along with other news and announcements about Resident Evil Village. Resident Evil Village (also known as Resident Evil 8) was revealed back in June during the PS5 game reveal event, and was also confirmed for Xbox Series X and PC via Steam. Details about a deluxe edition and a mode called Re:Verse for Resident Evil Village were leaked via Humble Bundle, but it's unclear if we'll hear more about this during the showcase. So far we know Resident Evil 8 follows RE7's Ethan Winters and takes place in a desolate, snowy village crawling with all sorts of monsters, including zombies, werewolves, witches, and what the internet refers to as the "tall vampire lady" featured in the video of the showcase's announcement tweet. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/09/16/resident-evil-8-village-gameplay-trailer"] During a presentation at Tokyo Game Show, director Morimasa Sato emphasized Village will focus more on player freedom and exploration, describing it as a "horror movie you can play." Producer Peter Fabiano recently told IGN Resident Evil Village is an "accumulation of all the best elements of Resident Evil games from the past 25 years," and that there will be "plenty of puzzles to solve and mysteries to unfold." With a trailer, gameplay, and a guided tour of the village on the table for the showcase, it's possible we'll get to see some, if not, all of that in action today. [poilib element="accentDivider"]

Resident Evil Village: ‘Re:Verse Mode’ and Deluxe Edition Details Leak

A Humble Bundle store page listing has revealed that Resident Evil Village will feature a mode called Re:Verse. Further details about what bonuses will feature in the game's deluxe edition have also been revealed ahead of today's Resident Evil Showcase stream. Twitter user Edward_Outcast first spotted the leak, posting it to Twitter. The copy they've screen-capped is sourced from the Humble Bundle store page for Resident Evil Village, which is still live as of writing. The description mentions that both versions of the game will include a new mode called Re:Verse. It's not clear yet whether this is a multiplayer mode or something else, but the copy surrounding it mentions "end of service" and its availability suggests as such. "Details of the operational period for Resident Evil Re:Verse, including commencement of availability and any potential announcements relating to the end of service, can be found on the official website," the copy reads. "Please note that, depending on the timing of your purchase of Resident Evil Village, Resident Evil Re:Verse may already no longer be available, and/or the title may become available through other means in the future." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/09/16/resident-evil-8-village-gameplay-trailer"] The description also links to a website for Re:Verse, which isn't live just yet. The store page also lists the items contained in the Deluxe Edition of the game. Players who purchase the Deluxe Edition will pick up the 'Trauma Pack' which contains "the "Samurai Edge" weapon, the "Mr. Everywhere" accessory, a screen filter and special safe room background music." There is also a pack of bonus items available to players who pre-order any edition of the game. This includes a Mr. Racoon Weapon Charm, a Survival Resources Pack and a Resident Evil Village Mini Soundtrack. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=resident-evil-village-playstation-5-screenshots&captions=true"] We've also got a short blurb describing the premise of the game "Set a few years after the horrifying events in the critically acclaimed Resident Evil 7 biohazard, the all-new storyline begins with Ethan Winters and his wife Mia living peacefully in a new location, free from their past nightmares," it reads. "Just as they are building their new life together, tragedy befalls them once again." Star Wars Andor Series: Alan Tudyk’s K-2SO Isn’t Part of the Show Yet

While Disney+'s upcoming Star Wars: Andor series will see Diego Luna return as the Rebel Cassian Andor, it appears Alan Tudyk's K-2SO isn't part of the series... yet. Speaking to Collider about his new series Resident Alien, Tudyk mentioned that even though they are shooting the new show now, he is not part of it. "They're shooting it right now, I'm not in it. But, if it stays on the air, stories keep getting told, I'll end up in there." Tudyk said. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/star-wars-andor-official-first-look-trailer-disney"] He acknowledged that, even though he hasn't been brought back as of this writing, he still seems to be pulled into the marketing of the show. "I'm all these announcements for the show, and I had suggested at D23 when we announced the show, that it be called K2 Fast K2 Furious: The Cassian Andor Series and, um, that's not happening, it's called Andor!" Tudyk joked. He also expressed a concern that, as he gets older, it will only get more difficult to perform in the elaborate mo-cap suit needed to bring K-2SO to life. “I do know this: I have to be on stilts for it, because the character is 7'1", and I'm not one of those guys that says, ‘somebody else do the motion capture, and I'll voice it later’. I'll have to do the motion capture, and I turn 50 in March,” Tudyk explained. “So I hope they get to it soon, because I'm not going to be on stilts in, like, five years. I'm not doing it!” [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=every-upcoming-star-wars-movie&captions=true"] All jokes aside, Tudyk is pretty confident K-2SO will be making his return, and he even mentions that series creator and Rogue One co-writer Tony Gilroy already has an idea in mind for him. "I'm going to be in the show. It's just that the story that Tony [Gilroy] is telling doesn't involve K-2SO until later on... I can't be too specific, but I can definitely say that I'm not going to be in the first season.” Tudyk confirmed. Tudyk's comments also seem to say that the Andor series is meant to be an ongoing series, as opposed to the limited Obi-Wan Kenobi series that is also on its way and will see the return of Hayden Christensen's Darth Vader. Star Wars: Andor is scheduled to be released on Disney+ in 2022 and will take place five years before the events of Rogue One. It is one of the many Star Wars projects in the works alongside others like Star Wars: Ahsoka and Star Wars: Rangers of the New Republic. WandaVision Star Confirms the Series Starts ‘Right After’ Avengers: Endgame

WandaVision actress Teyonah Parris has confirmed that the Disney+ series "picks up right after" the events of Avengers: Endgame. In an interview with TVLine, Parris, who portrays the grown-up version of Monica Rambeau on WandaVision, touched on the show's placement in the MCU timeline. In speaking about the events surrounding the series, she revealed that the sitcom takes place chronologically after Endgame, though she didn't specify whether anything has happened in-between the movie's final battle and the series. "[WandaVision] picks up right after the events of [Avengers:] Endgame, and for Monica, it's obviously years later from when we saw her as a girl in Captain Marvel," Parris explained, later adding that viewers will discover more about her character and "what's been happening with her over those years that we missed, how she's grown and evolved." [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=wandavision-all-the-marvel-and-tv-easter-eggs-in-every-episode&captions=true"] Vision was killed by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War when the Mad Titan ripped the Mind Stone from his forehead, however, Paul Bettany, who portrays the super-powered android in the new sitcom-style series, recently outlined a scrapped Avengers: Endgame scene that would have teased his character's prospective return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Despite him being cut from Endgame, the android Avenger remerged in the MCU's phase 4 opener WandaVision, which debuted on Disney+ last Friday. It's possible that Shuri might have downloaded quite a bit of Vision's data at the time of his death, making it possible for him to return, or he could simply be a figment of Wanda's imagination or even an elaborate TV show simulation. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/01/15/wandavision-episodes-1-and-2-review"] The first two episodes of the MCU sitcom focused more heavily on the set-up and introduction of its high-concept ideas than the plot, meaning that we're not much clearer about Vision's return, but with Wanda's involvement in the Doctor Strange sequel it's possible that the Scarlet Witch could end up as broken as she was for a time in the comic books when the series draws to a close. Microsoft Files Patent to Create Chatbots That Imitate Dead People

Microsoft has filed a patent that would allow the company to digitally revive deceased loved ones as chatbots, using the individual's personal information. The Independent reports that the tech giant has raised the possibility of creating an AI-based chatbot that would be built upon the profile of a person, which includes their "images, voice data, social media posts, electronic messages," among other types of personal information. It's understood that the chatbot would then be able to simulate human conversation through voice commands and/or text chats. However, Microsoft has taken the concept a step further by suggesting that a 2D or 3D model of a specific person could potentially be created, using "images and depth information, or video data" of an individual in order to build a chatbot that has the same characteristics and behaviour based on the digital output of a specific person. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2018/01/05/top-10-black-mirror-episodes"] "The specific person [who the chat bot represents] may correspond to a past or present entity (or a version thereof), such as a friend, a relative, an acquaintance, a celebrity, a fictional character, a historical figure, a random entity, etc.," the patent explains. "The specific person may also correspond to oneself (e.g., the user creating/training the chat bot." This entire concept isn't too dissimilar to the plot of the Black Mirror episode "Be Right Back," which tells a simple but effective story about the grief of losing a loved one. In the episode, Hayley Atwell and Domhnall Gleeson star as Martha and Ash. After Ash is killed in a car accident, Martha learns of a technology that can imitate a deceased person based on their online history. The episode stands as a prime example of a very human story that is enhanced with one particular item of future-tech, designed to make lives easier. However, Martha's journey with her AI boyfriend explores many of the potential pros and cons of these types of technological advancements, including some of the implications of living in a digital age.
