Netflix Renews Cobra Kai Early for Season 5

Cobra Kai will keep on keeping on as Netflix announced it has renewed The Karate Kid continuation series for a fifth season.

Season 4 of Cobra Kai isn’t even out yet, but Netflix wants fans to stay in its dojo with the early season renewal announcement. Season 4 is set to premiere in December.

Cobra Kai stars Johnny Lawrence and Daniel LaRusso decades after LaRusso beat Lawrence in The Karate Kid. Older and washed up, Lawrence and LaRusso’s rivalry reignites after Lawrence begins teaching karate and re-opens the Cobra Kai dojo.

The series originally premiered on YouTube Red, YouTube’s shelved original programming service. While YouTube Red was eventually shuttered, Cobra Kai was regarded as one of the best shows on the platform and Netflix took over the series starting with season 3.

IGN praised Cobra Kai’s last season as a delightful sequel that balances drama with utter ridiculousness. Or check out our analysis of how YouTube can move forward with original programming after Cobra Kai.

Hasbro Announces Next Transformers HasLab Project: Victory Saber

The next Transformers HasLab project from Hasbro is Victory Saber, an absolutely massive new figure that will come to production only if enough backers support it before its campaign end date on October 10 of this year.

Check out the prototype images of Victory Saber in the gallery below:

According to Hasbro, Victory Saber includes the following:

  • 1-inch Brain of Courage Brainmaster figure
  • 5-inch Autobot Saber figure
  • 8.5-inch V-Star jet
  • 7.5-inch Victory Leo figure
  • Sword of Justice accessory

If you're unfamiliar with Victory Saber, he's the supreme Autobot leader in the anime Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers: Victory, which differs from the Transformers lore you might be more familiar with. According to Hasbro, should this figure reach its backing goal, it will mark the "first time in 30 years" Japanese canon has been introduced "into the Transformers line."

The HasLab line has been used to great effect in the past to bring us the Mandalorian's Razor Crest and perhaps the coolest HasLab creation of all, the massive HasLab Unicron figure.

If you're keen to see Victory Saber in production, you can back the project now at Hasbro Pulse for $179.99.

Note: this story was updated to change the campaign end date to its correct October 10 date.

Marvel Developing Halloween Special for Disney+, Reportedly Based on Werewolf by Night

Marvel Studios is reportedly developing a Halloween special for Disney Plus, which may take inspiration from Werewolf by Night.

According to The Wrap, Marvel Studios has started searching for an actor to lead the cast of the Halloween special, which is said to be "centered on a werewolf character." The studio is believed to be looking for a "Latino male in his 30s," and it's noted that "individuals with knowledge" of the project suggested the character may be based on Werewolf by Night.

Werewolf by Night is the name adopted by two separate characters appearing across the pages of Marvel comics. The first, Jack Russell, debuted in a 1972 issue of Marvel Spotlight. The series ran for a total of 43 issues and one of those featured the first appearance of Moon Knight, who is now set to headline his own Disney+ show with Oscar Issac in the titular role.

The second incarnation of the character, Jake Gomez, a Native American with a cursed family, showed up last year in the third volume of Werewolf by Night. Gomez's recent appearance in Marvel comics may mean he's the one that fans may initially associate with the Werewolf by Night character, though it's unknown which version will star in the Halloween special.

The special is eyeing a production start in early 2022, so there's a lot of MCU to come before that. Marvel's What If...? recently marked the MCU's very first foray into animation. The nine-episode series will draw to close on October 6, with Hawkeye lined up as the next MCU show to hit Disney+ in November. Ms. Marvel is pencilled in for 2022 along with Moon Knight.

There's plenty coming on the big screen, too. Marvel's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is lined up to be the next Phase 4 movie, releasing in September, with Eternals in November, and Spider-Man: No Way Home in December. After that, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will premiere, serving as the first Marvel movie of 2022.

New Saints Row Gameplay Shows Off Laser Gun Battles and ‘Keep It Strange’ Motto

Volition and Deep Silver have revealed new gameplay from Saints Row, and its shows that there’s still a little wild madness in the game, despite the more grounded nature of the reboot.

The new “Welcome to Santo Ileso” trailer, which you can watch below, is a seven-minute long introduction to the Saints Row reboot, with developer insights as well as a healthy showing of gameplay. While the overall vibe of the game appears to be closer to Watch Dogs 2, there’s definitely some of Saints Row’s more weird personality here. Enemies can be seen firing laser guns, and explosive helicopter battles and picking beef with huge, militarized international corporations is more akin to the Saints Row games of the past than the more serious-ish GTA games.

The city’s motto is also “Keep it strange”, which suggests that there will be weirdness, even if it’s not on the absurd levels of Saints Row 4 and its superpowers and alien invasions.

The trailer also offers a closer look at the main characters, as well as their adversaries. The Saints is a group of four friends headed up by The Boss, a customisable character controlled by the player. While The Boss has been shown to be a woman by default, the trailer does show a brief glimpse of character customisation options, and shows that a male protagonist can also be chosen, as well as a variety of body types.

The Boss is joined by Eli, an investor looking to make The Saints an enterprise rather than just a group of criminals. Nina is the group’s mechanic and getaway driver, and Kevin is a persistently shirtless wannabe chef. Volition emphasises that the group has “heart”, suggesting a sort of Fast & Furious family vibe for the reboot.

The Saints will butt heads with at least three different enemy factions, each of which has its own territory in Santo Ileso. Marshall is a huge international corporation that employs strategic assassins and high tech equipment - including laser weapons - and intends to secure areas and lock you down. Panteros, meanwhile, is a much more rough-and-ready gang that have bruiser-style troops and attack with melee and heavy weapons. The final group shown in the trailer are the Idols, a bunch of anarchists wearing deadmau5 style helmets that defeat their foes using overwhelming numbers and swarm tactics.

For more from Saints Row, check out our first preview, the first trailer, and the developer's reaction to the initial fan backlash.
