The Star Wars Prequels: What Did George Lucas Get Right?

Note: We're rerunning this feature again because we've produced a companion video for it (embedded above). Enjoy!

It’s easy to hate on the Star Wars prequels, and you wouldn't be wrong to do so. When measured as the sum of their parts, they fall apart faster and harder than clone loyalty towards Jedi Masters post Order 66. Jar Jar is possibly one of the worst characters in movie history. The love story between Padmé Amidala and Anakin Skywalker is cringe-inducingly bad. And Anakin’s decision to go from loving soon-to-be-father to younglings slayer is a bipolar pill that’s difficult to swallow.

It's definitely not all bad, however. What follows is a collection of things that George Lucas got right in the prequel trilogy.

A Beautiful Mind’s John Nash, Wife Alicia Killed in Crash

Nobel Prize-winning mathematician John F. Nash, Jr., 86, and his wife Alicia, 82, -- who were portrayed by Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connelly, respectively, in the Oscar-winning film A Beautiful Mind -- died in a car crash in New Jersey on Saturday.

According to the New York Times, the Nashes "were in a taxi on the New Jersey Turnpike in Monroe Township around 4:30 p.m. when the driver lost control while trying to pass another car and hit a guard rail and another vehicle." They were pronounced dead at the scene.

Sadly, John Forbes Nash, Jr. is perhaps as much known to the general public for his descent into mental illness -- as documented in the aforementioned 2001 film and its source, Sylvia Nasar's 1998 biography of the same name -- as he was for his expertise in the fields of game theory, differential geometry, and partial differential equations.

Tomorrowland Tops Lackluster Weekend Box Office

In one of the weaker recent Memorial Day weekends for Hollywood, Disney's science-fiction adventure Tomorrowland staved off a strong challenge from last weekend's champ Pitch Perfect 2 to open in first place at the North American box office.

Tomorrowland -- from director Brad Bird and producer Damon Lindelof and starring George Clooney -- grossed an estimated $32.2 million, far below industry estimates of between $40-50 million. (Check out this roundup of Memorial Day weekend debuts to see how it compares to past openings during this holiday frame.)

Tomorrowland received a "B" Cinemascore from audiences and mixed-to-negative reviews from critics. It earned another roughly $27 million overseas, which indicates a tough road ahead for the film. The movie, which is inspired by the Disney theme park attraction of the same name, reportedly carries a hefty $150-190 million price tag.

How Neil Patrick Harris Became a Disney Theme Park Star

Neil Patrick Harris is a die hard Disney fan – specifically of Disney parks. As a result, the busy actor has already been involved for quite awhile in various ways with Disney, including taking part each year in Epcot’s Candlelight Processional at Walt Disney World in Orlando, FL and providing the vocal tracks for the California Screamin’ coaster at Disney's California Adventure at Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, CA.

Now, Harris can be seen by guests on a nightly basis in a big way at California Adventure, as he stars, alongside none other than Mickey Mouse, in the newly revamped World of Color show. Tied into several major events Disneyland Resort has launched as part of Disneyland’s 60th anniversary, the new show is called “World of Color – Celebrate! The Wonderful World of Walt Disney” and focuses on the history of Walt Disney himself – from his creation of Mickey Mouse, to his animated films to Disneyland. Harris and Mickey appear throughout the show as part of the large, projected images that appear on walls of water, intermixed with elaborate lighting and special effects to immerse the audience.
