Former EverQuest Dev Launches New Studio
EverQuest designer Ryan Barker has moved on from the long-running MMO to open his own independent studio, Stonethunder Games.
In addition to Barker, Stonethunder is staffed by EverQuest II and Splatterhouse artist Steve Merghart, as well as composer Russell Hugo. "My time in the industry has given me some great friends who are even greater creatives," Barker told GamesIndustry. "I'm ecstatic that I'm able to work with them on a project much more personally."
Unlike Barker's prior work at Sony Online Entertainment, the projects at Stonethunder will be much smaller in scope. "After fifteen years of EverQuest, it was time to move on to something else," he continued. "Projects don't get bigger than EverQuest, and I can safely say that our upcoming projects will all be decidedly smaller in comparison. In fact, our first game will fit right on your phone."
Yakuza 5 Release Window Announced
UDPATE: Sega's original post on it's blog has been edited, removing any reference to a possible release window for Yakuza 5. In it's place, Sega comments on problems with "development bugs popping up in localization" and taking time to work those out.
"Everything is more or less back on track," Sega said. "Once we have details, we’ll make sure to share them!"
Stay tuned for more information on Yakuza 5's release date as it becomes available.
Yakuza 5 is set for a mid-November release in the west, SEGA has confirmed.
In a post on its official blog, the company noted that "a few weird development bugs that popped up in localization are taking some time to iron out." That said, Yakuza fans can rest assured that "everything is more or less back on track," with Yakuza 5 expected to arrive next month "if all goes to schedule."
Syfy Cancels Defiance
Update: Trion CEO Scott Hartsman, who runs the developer behind the Defiance MMORPG, issued the following comment to IGN regarding the series' cancelation:
We’ve had a great time working closely with the team of stellar writers, designers, producers, and actors on the Defiance TV show. Like many of you, we’ve all enjoyed the stories they told week in and week out. Let’s treat this as a fond farewell, in celebration of a successful three year run of a show that broke a lot of new ground and brought an incredible quality experience to its viewers.
As for the game and its future, Defiance is Trion’s IP and the game will continue exactly as before. The show has always been a fantastic and interesting partner, but the two were always meant to be able to stand on their own, which is why the show was primarily set in St. Louis and the game in the SF Bay Area.
