Is It Time for Star Trek to Grow Up?
Star Trek lives! But not just that. With the announcement this week that a new Star Trek TV series is in the works for 2017, it seems the franchise may finally be in a position to grow up as well.
When Enterprise, the last Trek show to air, finished 10 years ago, television was in a different place, and Star Trek in particular had reached a sort of end point in its life cycle. Trek of some kind had been airing continuously for 18 years, ever since The Next Generation was launched in 1987. To put that into perspective, 18 years was the same amount of time that had passed with no Star Trek on the air between the cancellation of The Original Series in 1969 and TNG’s debut.
Weird Weather Discovered on Sunless Planet
PSO J318.5-22 is a planet drifting through space without a star, and now scientists have discovered it has weird and wonderful weather too.
The fact that it doesn't have a star to orbit made it easier to study, thanks to less interference from light. The researchers found that the light reflected from the planet changed by about 10 percent in just a few hours.
One reason for this could be that the Jupiter-sized planet has multiple layers of clouds made up of molten iron and dust, which could be hotter than 800 degrees Celsius inside.
The findings were published in The Astrophysical Journal, and could be the first observed evidence of weather on a planet outside of our solar system.
