Opinion: Are Professional Gamers Athletes?
My name is Hunter Hillenmeyer. I spent 8 years as a linebacker in the NFL with the Chicago Bears. For the last three years, I’ve been immersed in the gaming industry at Overdog, where I’ve largely been a spectator to the debate concerning whether competitive gaming is a sport. Earlier this week, an office debate prompted me to do some research and form my own opinion.
Overdog is hosting a Mountain Dew Game Fuel event on Friday that involves two NBA stars and several prominent gaming influencers playing Call of Duty Black Ops 3: Zombie Mode. In planning for the event, one of our employees, a former competitive gamer, posed the question: who would fare better, a pro gamer on an NBA court, or Memphis Grizzlies guard Mike Conley in a Call of Duty tourney with elite gamers?
