Spielberg’s Issues With Academy’s New Rules

Three-time Oscar winner Steven Spielberg is a "huge supporter of the Academy awards," but can't stand behind the Academy's response to its #OscarsSoWhite controversy. During an episode of The Hollywood Reporter's Awards Chatter podcast, Spielberg explained.

The director—who is nominated this year for Bridge of Spies—was surprised that Straight Outta Compton wasn't nominated for best picture, and that Beasts of No Nation's Idris Elba was snubbed for best supporting actor.

"I've seen Straight Outta Compton—my wife and I saw it when it first opened, the first weekend, and it just rocked our world. It was incredible. I was very surprised to see that omission," Spielberg added.

Silicon Valley was renewed for a third season last year, the day after its season two debut. It also earned a Golden Globe nomination for the most recent season. IGN's review of season two called it a "fantastically funny season" despite a few underdeveloped plotlines and characters. Season three begins April 24.

Google is Working on a Standalone VR Headset

Google's VR plans amount to a lot more than just another iteration of Google Cardboard.

According to The Wall Street Journal, citing people familiar with Google's projects, the company is currently in the middle of developing a standalone virtual reality headset that doesn't require the use of a PC, smartphone or even a game console. It will, however, come equipped with a display, high-end processors and front-facing cameras. Chips made by Movidius Inc. will also be used to track head movements.

The Mountain View company's plans don't end there, either. Alongside the standalone headset, a new version of the cardboard viewer will debut later this year, and its been said that it will include computer chips and sensors.
