Amnesia/SOMA Dev Working on First Non-Horror Game
Frictional Games, creator of Amnesia: The Dark Descent and last year's SOMA, is branching out and starting work on its first non-horror game.
According to Wow247's interview with creative director Thomas Grip, there are two games in the works: "One game is horror... the other is not."
"We want to spread out on what Frictional does," said Grip. "We don't just want to be 'the horror guys.'" While the themes of the new project haven't yet been completely decided, Grip does want to look at taking "depressing facts about the world and making them into an experience."

It may be Comic-Con week, but publishers certainly didn't take a break from releasing new comics. DC's latest wave of Rebirth debuts included Batgirl and the Birds of Prey, Justice League and The Hellblazer. Marvel kicked off a pivotal new chapter of Star Wars while also drawing Miles Morales into the Civil War II conflict. And it was an especially great week for smaller publishers thanks to the debuts of Snotgirl, The Hunt and Black Hammer.

Star Wars Battlefront’s Skirmish Mode Is as Close as You’ll Get to Playing the Original Games
Let's put it this way - this is as close as you're going to get to those nostalgic memories you have of the original Battlefront games right now.
Skirmish mode has arrived, and it finally gives players an option to play the game's standout modes alone or with a friend against hapless AI troopers, offline. Here's a quick blast of us having a go on Walker Assault in split-screen:
As you can see, Skirmish attempts to recreate Battlefront's online matches as perfectly as possible, with no added bells or whistles. It's good news for those who want to play the old-fashioned way, but it won't satisfy those clamoring for a fully-fledged Campaign mode.

New Tomb Raider Movie to be Based on 2013 Game Reboot
The new Tomb Raider movie starring Alicia Vikander will seemingly be based directly on the 2013 game reboot, according to the star herself.
While director Roar Uthaug has previously suggested that the movies will be inspired by Crystal Dynamics' grittier Lara Croft stories, Vikander seems to be much more specific:
“They told me they were doing the film based on the reboot of the game from 2013,” she said to HitFix. “That is more of an origin story. You get into an emotional aspect of getting to know Lara hopefully in an in-depth way. So I hope that doing a film of the rebooted game will bring something new and fresh that’ll stand on its own two legs.”
Company Claims No Man’s Sky Has No License For its ‘Superformula’
A Dutch company is claiming Hello Games is using its 'superformula' without permission in the developer's upcoming game, No Man's Sky.
The Dutch Telegraph (as picked up by NeoGaf and confirmed with Google Translate) reports that Tilburg-based company Genicap owns the 'superformula' Hello Games is using to generate the billions of planets in No Man's Sky. The kicker? Hello Games reportedly doesn't have a license to use it.
“We haven't provided a license to Hello Games,” Genicap's Jeroen Sparrow told the publication. "We certainly don't want to stop the launch, but if the formula is used we'll need to have a talk.”
“Deadly Premonition… in Britain” – Swery Has Written a Book
Iconic Japanese game designer Swery – of Deadly Premonition fame – has been on sabbatical from the games industry since November last year. He’s been on extended sick leave, recovering from reactive hypoglycemia. IGN Japan caught up with him at the recent BitSummit in Kyoto, and what he’s been up to may surprise you.
“I am currently away from work on sick leave, and in my private time I am writing a novel,” he says. “The first reason is that I suddenly had time on my hands, but the next reason is that I was saddened by the death of my cat and I wanted to find a form to express my sadness. So I started writing a book that stars a cat. In a British countryside town, there is a murder case, and a mystery unfolds that is written from the perspective of the cat. It’s like a version of Deadly Premonition but set in Britain. In Deadly Premonition, a protagonist from the city comes to a rural town and experiences being a fish out of water. In my novel, with the British countryside town, the people within the town are all very close, but by making the protagonist something other than human, that creates a filter to keep the reader a step removed.
New Star Wars: Rogue One Character Revealed
Disney and Lucasfilm have revealed a new character in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, aptly named 'Two Tubes'.
From the description on Star Wars' official Facebook page:
"Edrio Two Tubes is a mercenary pilot who flies alongside his eggmate, Benthic. The two share the nickname derived from the breathing apparatus that allows their Tognath physiology to process oxygen atmospheres. Edrio’s home world Yar Togna was conquered and occupied by the Empire, forcing him to flee as a refugee. Desiring to strike back at the Empire, Edrio and Benthic have allied with Saw Gerrera."

Crossy Road Dev Will Now Publish Games, Too
Australian developer Hipster Whale has announced its expansion into publishing, and appointment of former Film Victoria investment manager Clara Reeves as President.
The developer of the hugely successful mobile title Crossy Road, has announced its establishment of a mobile game publishing arm. The company hopes to partner with other mobile developers to produce projects that “put a twist on the conventional approaches to the market,” a sentiment that aligns with the non-exploitative approach it took with Crossy Road’s free-to-play model.
Divergent Reportedly Ending With TV Movie, Spinoff Show
Instead of concluding its Divergent film series on the big screen, Lionsgate is reportedly looking to wrap up its young adult series as a television movie before launching a spinoff TV show that takes place in the same post-apocalyptic setting.
According to Variety, The Divergent Series: Ascendent will be skipping theaters, as an unnamed source told the outlet the studio is in the "early stages" of negotiations to bring the film to television.
The plan is to conclude the stories involving the current cast and work in a brand-new crew that will then lead into a spinoff series. Lionsgate's television group is set to spearhead production, though, there's no word on where it will air, as the studio has reportedly not yet pitched the project to any networks.
