Call of Duty: WW2 Hands-Off Single-Player Impressions

Call of Duty: WW2’s return to its historical roots is not just a sudden change of scenery for the more recently high-tech franchise — it’s also a return to a more grounded kind of shooter in general. The advanced weaponry and enhanced mobility mechanics of the series’ last handful of games are obviously gone in favor of period-appropriate firearms and movement that doesn’t get much fancier than vaulting over cover.

But Call of Duty: WW2 seems to be doing a bit more to magnify your character’s vulnerability in its single-player campaign, based on the 15-20 minute hands-off preview I saw at E3 2017. Those looking for the type of power fantasy offered by Advanced Warfare might not get the same kick out of crawling through the mud and having bell towers crumble down on you and your teammates, but it seems there are still plenty of big, cinematic set pieces to keep the experience as thrilling — just in new ways. Whether or not that’s compatible with the “authentic” World War experience its creative directors seem to be aiming for is another story. Then again, how many of us are looking for a touching, meaningful meditation on war’s atrocities from a series known for its action flick-style bombast?

Fargo Creator on Nikki, Gloria, and Legion: Season 2

Warning: Spoilers follow for the first eight episodes of Fargo: Season 3 and Legion: Season 1...

Last week on Fargo, we saw Mary Elizabeth Winstead's Nikki find a fortunate ally in the form of Season 1's Mr. Wrench (Russell Harvard) as she once again evaded certain death after a brutal battle in the snowy woods. We'll have to see what fate awaits Nikki, now that the story's jumped ahead by three months, in Wednesday's new episode, the penultimate Season 3 episode, "Aporia," when it airs at 10/9c on FX.

I had the chance to speak to Fargo and Legion creator Noah Hawley at the ATX Television Festival this week, where I asked him all about tenacious Nikki's tendency to cheat death, Gloria's lost and adrift nature, the supernatural elements that we experienced in the bowling alley last week, and - finally - a little bit about what David Haller's journey will be like in Legion: Season 2.

E3 2017: Metal Gear Survive Delayed

Metal Gear Survive has been delayed and will now release in early 2018 for PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One.

The four-player survival co-op game was previously due for release sometime in late 2017. Konami representatives confirmed to Polygon that the team behind Metal Gear Survive needs more time to polish the game and, as a result, it has been "pushed back a few months."

Announced by Konami last year, Metal Gear Survive is set within the Metal Gear universe and takes place directly after the events of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes. Players will be tasked with fighting off zombie-like enemies with a slew of brand new weaponry.

Bungie Confirms Destiny 2 Is 30FPS on Xbox One X

Xbox One X won't run Destiny 2 at 60 frames per second, Bungie has confirmed.

Bungie did not provide any specific details regarding why Destiny 2 won't run at 60 frames per second on Microsoft's upcoming $499 console.

Walking Dead Coming to VR in Multiple New Games

The terrifying world of The Walking Dead will be coming to a VR headset near you thanks to a new partnership between Robert Kirkman and David Alpert's Skybound Entertainment and David Ellison's Skydance Interactive.

During E3 2017, the two companies announced a new partnership to develop multiple original virtual reality titles set within the universe of The Walking Dead. The inaugural title developed through this partnership will be a Walking Dead VR game featuring a new setting and cast of characters, "which players will experience through an innovative contextual interaction system."

The Walking Dead continues to dominate the pop culture space with the success of Kirkman and Charlie Adlard's comics and the AMC drama remains the top-rated show on TV. The companion series, Fear the Walking Dead, recently returned for its third season, while The Walking Dead Telltale Games helped carve out a new subgenre of video games with their ongoing, episodic storytelling. So it only makes sense that Skybound would look to expand the zombie-filled world to virtual reality.

Sony Defends PS4’s Lack of Cross-Play

PlayStation 4 doesn't support cross-play with other platforms for games like Rocket League and Minecraft, and Sony has come forward to defend its decision to block such support.

When asked by Eurogamer why PS4 lacks cross-play support, SIE global sales and marketing head Jim Ryan said, "We've got to be mindful of our responsibility to our install base."

He went on to highlight Minecraft and the importance of protecting that community, which includes many young players. "We have a contract with the people who go online with us, that we look after them and they are within the PlayStation curated universe," he said. "Exposing what in many cases are children to external influences we have no ability to manage or look after, it's something we have to think about very carefully."

13 Unforgettable Universal Monster Moments

This past weekend, Universal launched its all-new take on their classic monster movie pantheon known as the “Dark Universe” with The Mummy, starring Tom Cruise and Sofia Boutella. Naturally, this means it’s time to look back at the original films that inspired this latest iteration, and that’s not difficult to do; when you’re a “monster kid” like so many of us, you’ve been living with these movies throughout your entire life, watching them over and over. And certain moments in particular elevate those movies to the level of “classic,” so let’s look at 13 of them!

I decided to break these down in chronological order, giving you which film in the series it’s from, who participates in the scene in question, and why it’s significant (or at least why I think so). Given the limit of 13 slots, I also picked just one moment per film, and I stuck to just the core movies – that is, the ones with the pantheon of monsters we remember best that eventually dovetail into a connected storyline, and not necessarily other Universal horror entries like The Old Dark House or The Black Cat, or even The Werewolf of London. Even given that restriction, I still threw in The Mummy and The Invisible Man, but I also stopped at the series’ narrative end in House of Dracula, thus relegating the likes of the Creature from the Black Lagoon, the Mole People, or the Monolith Monsters to a future list; hey, you want them here, you write your own! And so, let us return once more to a new world of gods and monsters!

Dark Days: The Forge Reveals Batman’s Terrible Secret

Dark Days: The Forge #1 set the stage for this summer's event comic Dark Nights: metal in a pretty huge way.

DDFORGE_Cv1_ds

Warning: this article contains spoilers for Dark Days: The Forge #1!

The Forge lays the groundwork for the big mystery driving the events of Metal, reintroducing the Carter Hall version of Hawkman and hinting that Thanagarian Nth Metal has ties to something outside the scope of the traditional DC Universe. That's a mystery Batman has already spent years trying to unravel, especially following his encounters with other mysterious, super-powered metals like Electrum in the "Court of Owls" storyline and Dionesium in "Endgame."

Extensive Details on XCOM 2: War of the Chosen

As you might surmise from the thousands of words of detail below, gleaned from a massive, hour-long info dump from XCOM Creative Director Jake Solomon today, XCOM 2: War of the Chosen is a huge expansion. What it promises to revamp and layer on top of an already amazing tactical combat game makes me a little bit frightened at how much time I’m likely to sink into it when it comes out on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 at the end of August. Stay with me, because this gets kind of complex.

First, a big issue for the existing XCOM 2 community: what’s to become of the Rulers, the absolutely vicious boss characters introduced in the Alien Hunters DLC? Once the ultimate threat to XCOM, they’ve been scaled back and reigned in. With War of the Chosen installed, you’ll be notified that certain facilities are guarded by a Ruler; they won’t come after you until you’ve voluntarily attacked their hideout at the time of your choosing. However, once you’ve engaged them if they escape they’re free to pop up in any other mission as normal (unless that mission is also invaded by a Chosen). They’ll also be easier to manage: instead of reacting to every single action any XCOM soldier takes, they’ll now only get a free move for an attack or a movement, and even then only if it happens within the Ruler’s line of sight. That means things like reloads or certain special abilities won’t trigger them, which should give us a little more room to breathe when in combat.
