7 Big Surprises From Marvel’s Legacy Announcement
Last week Marvel pulled back the curtain on the 52 books that will be a part of the Legacy relaunch this fall. Even though many of these books look to be direct continuations of titles Marvel is currently publishing, there were definitely some surprises in the mix.
From returning characters to unexpected status quo changes to the tease of a huge character death, these are the biggest surprises of the Marvel Legacy reveal.
Neill Blomkamp’s Firebase – Exclusive Concept Art
District 9 and Elysium director, Neill Blomkamp has launched a series of Sci-Fi shorts with Oats Studios. The project attempts to answer a question that he posted on Twitter earlier this year, “If I sold experimental short films on @steam_games as tests for potential full feature films, would people watch them?”
Earlier this month the studio launched a short film called Rakka, which starred Sigourney Weaver and was directed and co-written by Blomkamp. That film generated over 2 million views on YouTube.
The latest short in the series is called Firebase, and we have an exclusive first look at some of the concept art from the film, which you can see below.
inXile Head Calls Kickstarter the ‘Ultimate Honor System’
Back in 2013, inXile Entertainment set the record for the highest-funded video game on Kickstarter with Torment: Tides of Numenera, and studio founder Brian Fargo has come forward to share his thoughts on the crowd-funding platform, describing it as the "ultimate honor system."
On the latest episode of our monthly interview show IGN Unfiltered, Fargo spoke incredibly highly of Kickstarter and the freedom it has offered his studio, which received over $4 million in funding from backers for Torment: Tides of Numenera.
"As a creative person, there are two important factors to me. That you're doing what you want to do... but as important is that you're doing it the way you want to do it," Fargo said. He went on to note that when you have a publisher to answer to, you could be "made to do it in a way that isn't with your style."
Shigeru Miyamoto and the Legacy of Mario
It’s late on the first day of E3, and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto looks very comfortable. In a small meeting room high above Nintendo’s booth, Miyamoto sits under a Super Mario Odyssey poster in what seems like a different, much quieter world than the chaos of the bustling show floor below.
Officially, E3 is in full swing, but Miyamoto has already made his big announcement for the week, appearing on stage with Ubisoft to reveal a new Mario crossover with Rabbids. Even as Nintendo spent the morning on its live show debuting new gameplay of Super Mario Odyssey, producer Yoshiaki Koizumi and director Kenta Motokura took the stage, giving Miyamoto the chance to watch from the sidelines. With such a long legacy behind him, he’s okay with not always being in the spotlight, and, in regard to both Rabbids and Odyssey, he’s happy to see other people making new playgrounds for Mario.
