The CW Cancels Batwoman After Three Seasons

The Batwoman showrunner for The CW, Caroline Dries, has announced on Twitter that the DC superhero show will not be returning for a new season.

In a Tweet Dries writes, "Just got the sad news that #Batwoman will not be seeing an S4. I am bummed, but full of gratitude." Dries added that it was an honor to make 51 episodes and thanked the show's producers, cast, crew, and fans.

Batwoman premiered in 2019 as part of The CW's DC universe of TV shows. The series originally starred Ruby Rose as Kate Kane, Bruce Wayne's cousin who takes on a cowl herself to fight crime.

After the first season, Rose announced she would be leaving the show with both Rose and CW offering different reasons for the split. The original plan was to recast Rose's character but this changed and instead, Batwoman's title was inherited by a new character, Ryan Wilder played by Javicia Leslie.

Leslie played Wilder's Batwoman for two seasons, the most recent of which premiered on October 13, 2021. It would end up being the final season for the character.

No reason has been given for why The CW canceled Batwoman, but the news follows reports that CW owners Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global are looking to sell the network. Despite the report, The CW is still exploring new DC shows, including Gotham Knights while renewing others like The Flash for a ninth season.

Captain Marvel 2 and Ant-Man 3 Swap Release Dates

Marvel Studios is a massive movie-making machine, but even machines need to shift gears every now and then. Today, Disney announced that two of its 2023 films will be changing release dates. Well, to be more specific, they're swapping dates.

Captain Marvel sequel The Marvels was originally scheduled for release on February 17, 2023, while Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania was scheduled on July 28, 2023. The films have simply traded places. IGN has learned that Quantumania is now coming in February, while The Marvels now releases in July.

Why are the films shifting? An easy guess points to problems in the delayed production. Insiders tell Variety that the change is simply due to one film being further along in the production process. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has already finished principal photography, while The Marvels still has a bit more to go.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania stars Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Douglas, Michelle Pfieffer, and Kathryn Newton as the recast Cassie Lang. The film will take the whole Ant-Man family to the quantum realm and pit them against Kang the Conqueror, played by Jonathan Majors. The film now releases on February 17, 2023.

The Marvels is the next adventure for Captain Marvel, played by Brie Larson. This time around, she'll be joined by Iman Vellani as Ms. Marvel and Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau, hence the film's title. Sam Jackson also reprises his role as Nick Fury. Korean star Park Seo-joon and Zawe Ashton are in the film in undisclosed roles. The Marvels is coming out on July 28, 2023.

Neal Adams, Batman Artist and Comic Book Legend, Dies at 80

Neal Adams, the acclaimed comic book creator who worked on titles like Batman, The X-Men and The Avengers, has passed away at 80.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the sad news, with Adams' wife Marilyn confirming he died from complications due to sepsis.

Following an early career working in comic strips and advertising, Adams became a major name at Marvel and DC in the late 1960's. Adams was notable for bringing a very different storytelling sensibility to comics, one that emphasized dynamic angles and detailed anatomy and facial expressions. Alongside contemporaries like Jim Aparo, Adams helped redefine the look of Batman, presenting a Dark Knight who was lean and lithe like a gymnast rather than the burly brawler of earlier Golden and Silver Age stories.

Adams is probably best known for his work on the monthly Detective Comics and Batman books, where he helped bring the franchise back to its darker roots following the cancellation of the 1966 TV series. Working frequently with writer Denny O'Neil, Adams introduced key new villains like Ra's al Ghul, Talia al Ghul and Man-Bat and revamped existing villains like Joker and Two-Face. 1973's Batman #251, titled "The Joker's Five-Way Revenge," is largely credited with transforming the Clown Prince of Crime from a comedic antagonist into Batman's deadliest foe. IGN previously ranked Adams at #2 in the list of the ten greatest Batman artists.

Adams and O'Neil also collaborated on the hugely influential Green Lantern/Green Arrow, which paired the two philosophically opposed heroes on a series of adventures steeped in real-world politics and conflicts (very rare in superhero comics at the time). That was the series that featured Hal Jordan being lambasted for ignoring the plight of African Americans, as well as the shocking reveal that Green Arrow's sidekick Speedy was addicted to heroin.

Adams' resume also includes the seminal Avengers storyline "The Kree Skrull War," the Deadman-focused Strange Adventures and the crossover special Superman vs. Muhammad Ali. He remained fairly prolific even in recent years, releasing books like Batman: Odyssey and The Coming of the Superman at DC and The First X-Men at Marvel.

In addition to his Marvel and DC work, Adams was an early voice in the battle for increased creator rights in comics. He helped spearhead an early comics union called the Comics Creators Guild and formed an artists studio called Coniniuity Associates (which also led to the creation of an independent publisher called Continuity Comics). Adams was instrumental in leading public pressure against DC to give official credit and financial compensation to Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, especially as the release of 1978's Superman: The Movie drew new attention to Siegel and Shuster's dire financial straits.

Adams certainly belongs on the Mount Rushmore of Batman creators, but his influence and impact on the industry extend far beyond Gotham City.

Holy Mother of Zavala, Guardians! Finally some good Fenchurching food! All three exotics are pretty bananas this week, but none more so than the deliciously God-rolled Nezarec's Sin, with an insane 69 stat points in some good spots. The other two are also pretty high, although the stat distributions are perhaps not totally ideal unless you've got a unique build.

  • Alloy Magazine
  • Rangefinder
  • Combat Grip

Dead Man's Tale - Exotic Scout Rifle

Hawkmoon and Dead Man's Tale are great weapons normally and once again we've got another pretty great rolls for both. Hawkmoon's roll this week is probably one of the best Xur has ever offered, so I highly recommend picking it up. Dead Man's Tale also has vorpal this week, so will be a pretty good pick, though certainly not a God roll.

Some interesting rolls this week! I always recommend snagging the Jian 7 when it's in stock (one of my favorite energy pulses) and the roll this week is pretty great. Also may want to pick up the False Promises roll in case Bungie's ambition to buff auto rifles next season makes them more viable.

Xbox Games With Gold for May 2022 Revealed

Microsoft has announced that May 2022's Games with Gold are Yoku's Island Express, The Inner World - The Last Wind Monk, Hydro Thunder Hurricane, and Viva Piñata: Party Animals.

As revealed on Xbox Wire, the four Games with Gold will be available to anyone with Xbox Live Gold or Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, with Yoku's Island Express and Hydro Thunder Hurricane available starting on May 1.

Yoku's Island Express is an open-world pinball game with Metroidvania and platforming elements. Players take on the role of Yoku, a pint-sized mailman turned hero as he traverses and works to save Mokumana Island.

We named it among our top ten Metroidvania games (that aren't Metroid or Castlevania), and in our 8/10 review said: "Yoku’s Island Express is a novel Metroidvania-pinball hybrid that stands as something wholly unique and incredibly fun."

Also available on May 1, but only until May 15, is Hydro Thunder Hurricane. This rocket-powered speedboat racing game from 2010 didn't receive as much of IGN's favor.

"Between uninspired references to the original game and its reliance on aged arcade racer elements," we said in our 5/10 review, "Hydro Thunder Hurricane is a dull, monotonous experience that shows its hand early and fails to deliver on its pedigree."

Available later in the month on May 16 is The Inner World - The Last Wind Monk, a sequel to the 2013 point and click adventure game. Players take on three characters - Robert, Laura, and Peck the pigeon - as they embark on an adventure to save their friends in a completely wacky world.

Last but not least, Viva Piñata: Party Animals is available on the same day but only available for two weeks until May 31. This isn't a traditional Viva Piñata but a party game instead, featuring a number of minigames that players take part in using beloved characters of the franchise.

IGN didn't love this one either, as in another 5/10 review, we said: "The inherent problem that really bogs down the action in Viva Pinata's aesthetic successor is that the mini-games simply don't stem from a fun design scheme."

Be sure to redeem April 2022's Xbox Games with Gold before they leave the service, which includes Another Sight, Hue, Outpost Kaloki X, and MX vs ATV Alive.

New PlayStation Plus Explained: What Happens to My Current Membership?

The all-new PlayStation Plus is set to launch this summer, with a whole slew of benefits packed in for those who are willing to pay a little more. It's effectively a combination of PS Plus and PS Now as we currently know it, but with a few extra features to boot. For example, the new Premium tier of the service will have over 700 games to play, stream, and download after the launch in June.

But, what happens to our current PS Plus memberships? There are plenty of PlayStation fans who have years of PS Plus or PS Now already stacked up, and some might even want to upgrade to the new Extra or Premium tiers as well. Well, have no fear, because we've got all the answers right here. Moreover, there's even some new info to check out when it comes to using pre-paid PS Plus or Now vouchers after the new service launches.

PlayStation Plus: It's Essential for Current Members

In case you missed it, there are three tiers for the new PS Plus. Essential, Extra, and Premium. Essential is what the service is today, including multiplayer access, free monthly games, discounts, and cloud storage. So, it's an easy transition for current members of PS Plus, you'll simply be moved over into the Essential tier at launch. The Essential tier will also cost the same as the current PS Plus, so you won't be paying any more either.

Stacking Memberships Is Currently Disabled

Sony has confirmed it's stopped PS Plus and PS Now code stacking for existing members prior to the new PS Plus launch. If you've purchased a code and haven't been able to activate it, you'll need to wait until your membership expires, or when the new PS Plus launches.

If you want to redeem the voucher then, whether you let your PS Plus expire, or you are now a Premium or Extra member, Sony has provided new information for converting these codes, which will be based on the "monetary value of the voucher you are redeeming." For example, if you become a PS Plus Premium member but want to redeem a code for 12-months of standard PS Plus, this will therefore be converted to about 6-months instead. We've included Sony's FAQ breakdown chart of these conversion rates across all PS Plus tiers below as well.

How to Upgrade to PS Plus Premium and Extra

So once the new service launches and you become a PS Plus Essential member, you may be wondering, how do I get all the new features? To do that, you'll need to upgrade to PS Plus Extra, or PS Plus Premium. Each tier will bring new benefits, so make sure you read up on the new PS Plus before committing.

To upgrade to another tier, Sony's PS Plus FAQ page states: "You will be charged a pro-rated fee to level up the remaining time on your existing membership to the desired level."

So breaking this down, if you've got any time left on your PS Plus membership, you will have to pay the difference in cost to upgrade to the more expensive tiers. For example, if you paid for 12-months of PS Plus ($59.99/year), and you want to upgrade to PS Plus Premium ($119.99/year), you'll have to pay another $60 to complete the upgrade and so forth.

PS Now Members Will Get a Premium Upgrade

When the new PlayStation Plus launches, all PS Now members will be rolled into the new Premium tier for the remainder of their subscription time. This is the tier with the most benefits, and it's also the most expensive tier available.

When this was first announced, a few PlayStation users did quickly take advantage and effectively secured themselves PS Plus Premium for half price. But, this loophole has since been shut down.

What About Those with Both PS Plus and PS Now?

Sony has confirmed that PlayStation users who currently have both a PS Now and PS Plus membership will also get upgraded to PS Plus Premium when it launches. The length of this membership will then be equal to the longest subscription you own.

So, for example, if you have PS Now subscribed up until August 2022 and an active PS Plus membership until September 2025 - that means you’ll be upgraded to PS Plus premium until September 2025. This is probably the best deal possible, as you won't have to pay any upgrade fees.

Sonic 2 Is the Highest Grossing Video Game Movie Ever In the U.S.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is the highest grossing video game movie ever in the U.S.

As pointed out by star Ben Schwartz, the sequel has now outperformed the first Sonic film, the previous record holder. Sonic 2 has hit $147 million (and counting) compared to the original's $146 million.

Sonic 2 didn't conquer the global market but still did pretty well, making $287.8 million according to Deadline. While still an impressive amount, the film falls short of 2016's World of Warcraft which made $439 million.

The Blue Blur got off to a hot start in the U.S. by winning the domestic weekend box office, outperforming Morbius and Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum's The Lost City with $71 million.

The film has a star-studded cast that includes Jim Carrey, Idris Elba, and Ben Schwartz, but it's currently unknown which members will be returning for Sonic 3, which Paramount announced in February.

Carrey said ahead of Sonic 2's release that this may be his last film ever, saying "I might continue down the road, but I'm taking a break," and Paramount has already said it wouldn't even try to replace him.

Schwartz, who plays Sonic, and Elba, as Knuckles, will likely be returning however, and the latter is even getting his own spin-off show as the Sonic cinematic universe was announced in February.

In our 7/10 review of the film, IGN said: "Sonic the Hedgehog 2 brings all the humour and charm of its predecessor, while also being delightfully more loyal to its source material."

Borderlands Movie Gets a Faithful First Look at CinemaCon 2022

The first look at the Borderlands movie was revealed at CinemaCon 2022, and it looks to be a faithful adaptation of the beloved video game franchise.

While we only saw about a minute of footage, it was immediately clear that this film is set in the Borderlands universe. From the artstyle to hearing Jack Black as Claptrap to seeing Cate Blanchett as Lilith, Jamie Lee Curtis as Dr. Patricia Tannis, and Kevin Hart as Roland, all the familiar beats from Borderlands are being hit, albeit with a bit of Hollywood starpower being thrown in.

Production on the Borderlands movie wrapped in June 2021 and the crew shared a glimpse of Claptrap to celebrate the moment.

The film will follow Blanchett's Lilith and her quest to return to the planet of Pandora to recover the missing daughter of "the universe's most powerful S.O.B., Atlas." Alongside the previously mentioned cast members, Blanchett will also be joined by Ariana Greenblatt's Tiny Tina, Edgar Ramirez's Atlas, Gina Gershon's Moxxi, Janina Gavankar's Commander Knox, and Florian Munteanu's Krieg.

Eli Roth is the director of the Borderlands movie and Chernobyl's Craig Mazin wrote the script with Roth.

For more, check out our review of the Borderlands spin-off Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, our look at the 10 best Borderlands DLC of all time, why Edgar Ramirez thinks fans of the games should be excited for the film, and how Krieg won't be "exactly the same" as his video game counterpart.

The Hunger Games prequel film The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes will be released in theaters on November 17, 2023.

Revealed at CinemaCon 2022, the prequel story will be based on Suzanne Collins' book of the same name and will "focus on Coriolanus Snow at age 18, years before he would become the tyrannical President of Panem."

"Young Coriolanus is handsome and charming, and though the Snow family has fallen on hard times, he sees a chance for a change in his fortunes when he is chosen to be a mentor for the Tenth Hunger Games… only to have his elation dashed when he is assigned to mentor the girl tribute from impoverished District 12," the official description continues.

Lionsgate announced The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes in 2020, and confirmed that Francis Lawrence, who directed Catching Fire and Mockingjay Part 1 & 2, would return to lead this new story. Collins' novel was released on May 19, 2020.

No casting has been revealed for the film, but we do know that Collins will write the film's treatment and will serve as an executive producer. Oscar-winner Michael Arndt will adapt the sceenplay.

“Suzanne’s new book has been worth the wait. It offers everything fans could hope for and expect from The Hunger Games while also breaking new ground and introducing an entirely new canvas of characters," said Joe Drake, chairman of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, in the announcement. "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is creatively thrilling and takes this world to complex new dimensions that open up amazing cinematic possibilities. We’re thrilled to reunite this filmmaking team with this very unique franchise, and we can’t wait to begin production.”
