Niantic Buys Company to Add Social Functionality to Pokemon GO
Niantic has acquired the developers behind social media startup Evertoon to help enhance its mobile apps, including Pokemon GO.
Niantic revealed the news in a statement on their company blog from CEO John Hanke.
Hanke explains that Niantic gains a "wealth of talent and experience" from the acquisition, and the Evertoon team will "help build social systems that will benefit our entire community."
Evertoon's original app allowed users to create animated shorts that can be controlled with emoji commands and avatars. The videos could then be shared across a range of social media platforms.
It is unclear if Niantic will use Evertoon's animated short social network within games like Pokemon GO, though Hanke's statement implies Evertoon will be creating systems for Niantic's existing apps.
