Epic Releases $12 Million Worth of Paragon Assets for Free
Epic Games has announced the release of $12 million worth of assets from its free-to-play MOBA title, Paragon, with more to follow.
The assets are available for Unreal Engine 4 developers to access, and include 20 "AAA quality" characters along with their skins, dialogue, VFX, and animations, plus over 1,500 "environmental components." They're available to download for free in the Unreal Engine Marketplace.
Epic has gone a step further, offering advice to those looking to use Paragon assets in their own UE4 projects, suggesting they start with Shinbi, whose animation blueprint can be used for animating the characters in the other Paragon packs. There's also a sample map that can be used as a base for a custom environment, or for testing.
The Pacific Rim Characters Who Are Back for Uprising
The filmmakers behind Pacific Rim Uprising, which takes place a decade after the events of the 2013 original, revealed to IGN why only select characters from the first film returned for the sequel.
During two separate, recent phone interviews, producer-star John Boyega and director Steven DeKnight each spoke about why Rinko Kikuchi's Mako Mori was the most important character to bring back for the sequel, which sees Boyega play Jake Pentecost, the son of Idris Elba's late, great Stacker Pentecost.
"Mako was a no-brainer. For me, if Mako wasn’t in it, I wouldn’t have signed on. Because she is the connective bridge between Stacker and Jake," Boyega said. "Her joining the family explains a lot for Jake and Stacker’s problematic relationship. But then also, having much more of younger kids to play the pilots might be seen as a baby-ish move, but for us, I had never seen about the origin story for a pilot. Like, what makes a Jaeger pilot happen?"
God of War’s First 3 Hours Are Way More Emotional Than We Expected
“Everything is different. Try not to dwell on it.”
These are some of the first words that Kratos says to his son, Atreus, in the opening moments of God of War, and while he’s referring to the ever-changing Norse world of Midgard, the developers at Sony Santa Monica could just as easily have been speaking about the franchise.
Kratos, a one-note combustion engine of rage in the original God of War trilogy, has grown up and become a father who’s terrified that he’ll pass his anger on to his son. He can still tear his enemies literally in half – we did that quite a bit in our three hours of hands-on time with the game – but there’s a difference here, an emotional depth and true sense of purpose that was missing from his time scaling Mount Olympus.
Former Division Devs Announce Title Based on ‘Cult Classic’ IP
Ex-Ubisoft Massive employees have formed a new studio and announced its first project, a multiplayer game based on a so-far mysterious "cult classic" IP.
Sharkmob's website states that it's currently working on an unannounced project with an "undisclosed publisher". While the statement says that the studio's limited in what it can share, the title is being developed using the Unreal Engine, and will be a "multi-platform project," described as "action-packed" with a probable M-rating.
The licensed IP it's working on is described as a "cult classic" by Sharkmob CEO, Fredrick Rundqvist in an interview with Venture Beat, who has revealed plans to turn it into a franchise, along with regular content updates and "live services" once it has been released. "Of course, in our opinion, the pure mechanics of that are not interesting if you don’t have the right IP, the right setting, the right fantasy to get people really excited about the game mechanics we provide. I guess that also gives you a hint as to what kind of game we’re making.”
HTC Vive Pro Price Announced, Vive Price Reduced
The HTC Vive Pro, with several improvements over the original HTC Vive, can now be pre-ordered for $799 USD. All Vive Pro units ordered before June 3 come with a 6-month subscription to Viveport at no extra cost.
Additionally, the price of the original HTC Vive is dropping by $100 effective immediately, putting it at $499 USD "across the globe." Last August, HTC dropped the Vive price to $599.
HTC announced the Vive Pro at CES 2018, as well as a Vive wireless adapter to be released at a later time. The improvement that most immediately jumps out is the increased resolution. The Vive Pro uses dual OLED screens for a combined resolution of 2880 x 1600, a "78% increase" over the original Vive headset.
