LEGO DC Super-Villains Makes Being Bad Feel So Good

I've been playing LEGO video games since I introduced my then-four-year-old son to LEGO Star Wars 2. In the decade since, it's been a pleasure seeing LEGO games evolve and become bigger, better, and funnier. In my time with LEGO DC Super-Villains, I took the first step toward super villainery, helped Joker and Harley make it to the top of a clock tower, and broke Lex Luthor out of Strikers Island.

LEGO DC Super-Villains feels comfortably familiar, with classic LEGO-game sound effects like stud collection and building mixing well with the DC villain characters. TT Games has the LEGO minifigure models down pat, with subtle textures that make them look like their real-world plastic counterparts. There are even LEGO logos visible on the arms, bringing the graphics closer to the ultra-realism seen in The LEGO Movie and LEGO Batman. But what really popped for me is just how bright and exciting the color palette is.

Fortnite Supports Built-in Voice Chat on Switch

Switch players won't need to rely on Nintendo's voice chat app to communicate with each other while playing Fortnite for very long.

During Nintendo's E3 Treehouse stream today, Epic Games announced that Fortnite, which released today on Nintendo's console, will support voice chat directly through the Switch's headphone jack beginning Thursday.

Switch's voice chat app released in July 2017. While many gamers have found it to be a peculiar and frustrating solution, Nintendo views it as being an ideal means for communication on Switch.

Rage 2 Is Full of Ways to Murder Goons With Superpowers

Rage 2 has a lot going on. There’s a post-apocalypse wasteland. There's rubble and debris, just, everywhere. And there are a bunch of kaleidoscopic mohawked goons crawling all over it. But when I went hands-on with a small chunk of it at E3 2018, it’s clear there’s also a lot going on with its combat.

You’re a Ranger, a kind of wasteland super soldier, that’s just lousy with nanotech coursing through your veins. That gives you access to powerful abilities called Nanotrites which compliment a huge weapon wheel full of the three-Gs: guns, gadgets, and grenades.

This essentially gives you a million options when it comes to killing goons. While in my hands-on demo I didn’t get to see any of the driving or open-world exploration -- Bethesda said it plans to show that off soon -- I did kill so, so many goons that I might not have left any for you when the game releases Spring 2019.

My Hero One’s Justice Nails Quirks for a Fun, Imbalanced Fighting Game

If there were to be an overpowered character in a My Hero Academia video game I’d assume it’d be All Might (he deserves it), but, to borrow the words from an onlooker, it seems someone on the development really likes Ochaco Uraraka. From what I played in my E3 demo, My Hero One’s Justice does a great job of adapting characters’ Quirks for fun moves, but certainly needs some balancing and a steadier frame rate.

A quick note: there are spoilers for villain Quirks in My Hero: One’s Justice, which is something I didn’t really expect going in. If you’re not caught up on the My Hero Academia anime, you’re definitely in spoiler territory. And even if you are caught up, some villain Quirks that haven’t been shown in the anime are revealed through gameplay. This preview is spoiler-free.

Cyberpunk 2077 Doesn’t Look Like The Witcher, But It Does Look Incredible

Six Years after its first reveal, I have seen a live demo of Cyberpunk 2077, and it looks like everything I was hoping it would be. A beautiful and sprawling RPG set in an alternate future that sits somewhere between Dredd, Blade Runner, and The Fifth Element.

The biggest surprise is that the gameplay is almost entirely first-person. With a helluva lot of guns to fire and damage values popping up as your bullets hit enemies, the combat plays out more like Borderlands or Deus Ex than it does The Witcher 3. There are tons of abilities to use during combat, including bullet ricocheting and a bullet time slow down that came in handy quite a bit during the 45 minute demo I saw.

Why Spider-Man PS4’s Web-Swinging Feels So Good

Nearly every piece of media featuring Spider-Man wants to nail the sensation of just how fun it must be to swing around as the webhead. Because, boy, does it look like he has a lot of fun, and, thankfully, I absolutely had a blast playing Insomniac Games’ PS4 Spider-Man E3 2018 demo.

From my first swing, the demo made it evident immediately that Insomniac wants its web-swinging to be easy to grasp but multifaceted enough to allow for an enjoyable level of improvisation. Much like with Insomniac's Sunset Overdrive, I always knew another, platform or wall would allow me to continue my momentum.

This is a Peter Parker who knows his way around the city, and who’s been traversing its building tops for a few years now. I wasn’t quite as graceful as Spidey should be in my first few swings, but Insomniac has assembled a variety of web-swinging mechanics that soon made me feel exactly like Spider-Man...or at least, how I imagine he must feel.
