French Fencing Federation Recognizes Lightsaber Duels as Competitive Sport

The force is strong with the French Fencing Federation, which now recognizes lightsaber dueling as a competitive sport.

Per the Associated Press, this now puts George Lucas’ laser swords alongside the foil, epee and sabre - the traditional blades used in the sport. Lightsabers, however, will not be recognized at the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics.

During 3-minute matches, participants use rigid polycarbonate lightsaber replicas, with LED-lighting giving them their iconic glow - some even use the more expensive models that generate sound effects. Allowing lightsaber duels into the French Fencing Federation is largely a move to entice more young people to get into the sport, and to become more active in general.

DCeased Is a Gruesome End-of-the-World Superhero Event

A fast-spreading virus. People instantly turning violent. The world consumed by blood, panic, and death. This isn’t the latest installment of The Walking Dead but a new six-issue DC Comics event starting May 1 called DCeased, spearheaded by writer Tom Taylor with artists Trevor Hairsine, Stefan Gaudiano, James Harren and Rain Beredo. If you recognize Taylor’s name from the mega hit Injustice, then you already know DC’s characters are in for a really, really rough time.

“The idea originated with editor Ben Abernathy. He had an idea to do a horror/zombie tale at DC, and hit me up to ask if I’d like to be involved. At the time I was pretty busy, but over the next few days, my mind was racing,” Taylor told IGN. “I couldn’t stop thinking of new and terrible ways to torture my favorite heroes in ways that made Injustice look tame by comparison.”

Amazon’s Wheel of Time Series Finds Its Director

Amazon's long-anticipated Wheel of Time adaptation has found its director.

IGN can reveal that Westworld helmer Uta Briesewitz will direct the first two episodes of Amazon's sprawling fantasy series, based on the books by Robert Jordan.

Briesewitz is no stranger to high-concept genre offerings - she directed the best episode of Westworld Season 2 - the poetic Kiksuya, which followed Ghost Nation warrior Akecheta's journey to consciousness - and has helmed two episodes of the upcoming Stranger Things Season 3.

She's also directed episodes of Marvel's Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and The Defenders, plus Altered Carbon and The Deuce, so we can't wait to see what she does with Jordan's magical landscape.

Anthem: Day One Patch Will Improve Loading Times

Because the world is strange and confusing, Anthem's day one patch will arrive a week after thousands of people began playing it. Thankfully, it should improve one of the most common complaints about the early version – its loading times.

Arriving on the game's official release date of 22 February (it was made available to EA Origin Access Premier subscribers on the 15th), the patch is wide-ranging to say the least, but puts loading times (and a bug that caused infinite loading screens) right at the top.

To gauge how big a problem that's been, the Anthem subreddit has been ablaze with posts on the subject. One post sees u/dragonoob44 timing how long it takes to exit Freeplay to change gear, then re-enter, which results in over 7 minutes of loading. It's not an out-of-the-ordinary complaint.
