Dark Phoenix Explained: What Is the Real Story Behind the New Movie?

With the (last?) X-Men movie Dark Phoenix hitting theaters, Jean Grey once again loses control and becomes the cosmic destroyer known as the Dark Phoenix.

If you're feeling a sense of deja vu right now, you're not alone. This is actually the second time Fox has adapted the classic Dark Phoenix Saga storyline from the X-Men comics, after 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand. So with the new iteration of the story about to be released, now is as good a time as any for a quick refresher on the Phoenix Force and its role in the X-Men mythos...

Dark Phoenix Explained: The Basics

The Phoenix Force is one of the most powerful and dangerous entities in the Marvel Universe. It exists as a living embodiment of creation and passion. Its sole purpose is to burn away the old and outdated and make room for new life to grow and flourish in its place.

Age of Wonders: Planetfall Is a Sci-Fi 4X with XCOM-Like Tactical Battles

Of all the varied visions of the future we see in games, some of my favorites have always been the ones that include dinosaurs. Age of Wonders: Planetfall doesn’t skimp on these Cretaceous throwbacks, and it’s all the better for it. Combining a detailed 4X campaign layer with XCOM-like tactical battles, Triumph’s first foray into sci-fi has a lot of elements that will look familiar to a turn-based strategy veteran. But the way they’re assembled is not quite like anything I’ve played before.

The backdrop for all this hex-based expanding, exploring, and exterminating is that there used to be a grand, galactic government that ruled over settled space peacefully, and everything was great. You know, unless you were a slave. Every shining beacon of spaceborne civilization has to have a rotting, decadent core after all. But a couple hundred years back, that all fell apart and left scattered groups of ragtag survivors to pick up the pieces and try to make something with them.

Venom Retcons Eddie Brock’s History

Marvel's current Venom comic has already dramatically rewritten the history of the symbiote, and now it's doing the same for its host, Eddie Brock.

Warning: this article contains spoilers for Venom #11!

STL108315

Much of Eddie Brock's story over the past 15 years has been dominated by his battle with cancer. The 2003 Spectacular Spider-Man series first revealed Eddie's cancer diagnosis, while also showing that the symbiote was drawn to Eddie specifically because it feeds on the adrenaline his sick body releases. Later, 2004's Marvel Knights Spider-Man featured a storyline where the dying Eddie auctioned off the symbiote to the highest bidder. And even as other characters like Mac Gargan and Flash Thompson had their stints as Venom, Eddie himself found himself cured by Mister Negative and transformed into Anti-Venom.

5 of the Best Black Lead TV Shows You Can Watch Right Now

In the late '80s and early '90s, black lead TV shows were mostly relegated to sitcoms, like The Cosby Show, Martin, and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. While many of those titles are still popular in syndication, the twenty-first century has ushered in more drama series, like Empire and How to Get Away With Murder.

Most of these creative changes can be attributed to the rise of black showrunners in Hollywood. Scandal creator Shonda Rhimes is the perfect example. She recently signed a lucrative 9-figure deal with Netflix to develop new original programming. While this creative pool of black showrunners is still small when compared to the overall television landscape, it's inspiring to see new diverse perspectives in entertainment.
