Everything You Love About the Switch, the Wii U Did First

You know when a plane in a movie falls into an irrecoverable dive, the rocks rising up to meet it, the collision inevitable, the pilot’s eyes locked wide open - but then, somehow, it pulls up at the last second? For you that image might call to mind Goldeneye; for me, a person so British as to make parody impossible, it’s Wallace and Gromit. The point is, it’s the same satisfying trajectory Nintendo fans have witnessed in the two years since the Switch came out.

The extraordinary success of the Switch has been all the more exhilarating for the downward momentum Nintendo had accrued during the Wii U years. For a single company to be responsible for both a console cycle’s most disastrous machinery failure and its soaring surprise recovery? It’s nothing less than the stuff of cinema, if movies were made about game company financials. And in a world where The Big Short wins an Oscar, maybe they will. But the truth is more complex. In fact, everything that has made the Switch the console of a generation was birthed, rather clumsily, by its predecessor.

Google Teases ‘Future of Gaming’ Vision

Google has unveiled a teaser hyping up the company's GDC 2019 keynote happening next week, at which the company promises to "unveil Google's vision for the future of gaming."

The teaser trailer doesn't show off much — it flips through a series of locations, from sci-fi spaceships, to a garage, to backstage of a concert stage — as the camera slowly zooms in at each location toward a white light.

Google doesn't offer many details beyond that teaser about what exactly its plans for the gaming future are. The teaser comes with the tagline to "gather around," with a link to a Google Store sign-up teasing "a new way to play." But the company has been recently making inroads into the gaming market, while rumors abound that the company is planning to unveil a potential console or streaming platform at GDC.

What Captain Marvel’s Supreme Intelligence Looks Like in the Comics

Warning: this article contains spoilers for the Captain Marvel movie!

Among many other new characters, Captain Marvel introduces the Supreme Intelligence. This powerful being is one of the smartest creatures in the entire Marvel Universe, which makes it perfectly suited to lead one of the most powerful cosmic empires around.

However, the movie never actually shows us what the Supreme Intelligence looks like. It only ever appears to Carol in her mind, taking the form of her mentor, Dr. Wendy Lawson, and preying upon her vulnerability. This is a far cry from the Supreme Intelligence of the comics, which is normally depicted as a monstrous, green, tentacled head with four yellow eyes. Not unlike MODOK, the Supreme Intelligence's bloated body is little more than a vessel for its oversized brain.
