Remembering the First and Only Mario FPS
Every year dozens of classic video games celebrate milestone anniversaries. There always seem to be a few major releases highlighted above the rest, but last year may have been the biggest yet for Nintendo fans. 2018 saw the 30th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. 3, the 25th anniversary of Star Fox, and the 20th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, just to name a few.

Netflix has announced it’s developing an original Greek Mythology-based anime series called Gods & Heroes.
The streaming giant has officially ordered eight episodes of the show, which tells the story of "a young man who, cast aside by his people, learns that he is the illegitimate son of Zeus. He alone can save both Heaven and Earth but to do so he must survive the vengeful wrath of a goddess who wants him dead and the monstrous forces of evil she aligns against him."
The show will include the vocal talents of Jason O’Mara, Mamie Gummer, Derek Phillips, Chris Diamantopoulos, Jessica Henwick, Melina Kanakaredes, Claudia Christian and Elias Toufexis. Charley and Vlas Parlapanides, who worked on Immortals and Death Note, will serve as the show’s creators, writers and executive producers. Castlevania’s Powerhouse Animation will be the studio behind Gods & Heroes. A poster for the show can be seen below.
Sony Teases 7 Years of Marvel Movies and TV
Sony, which has released the financially successful Venom and highly critically successful Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, is teasing it has the next “seven or eight years” of its Marvel properties laid out, for both movies and TV.
In an interview with Variety, Sony Pictures Entertainment chairman Tony Vinciquerra and Sony Pictures Television chairman Mike Hopkins discussed Sony’s plans for its Spider-Man related properties in the future, and it appears Sony has a pretty clear vision of where they're going.
“We have the next seven or eight years laid out as to what we’re going to do with that asset, and that will not only be on the film side — it’ll be on the TV side,” said Vinciquerra. “Our television group will have its own set of characters from within that universe that we will seek to develop.”
Spyro Reignited Trilogy Finally Adds Subtitles
The Spyro Reignited Trilogy is finally receiving subtitles and the option to toggle on and off motion blur following months of fans requesting these features.
Included in the patch notes for the Reignited Trilogy’s PlayStation 4 Patch 1.03 and Xbox One Patch 1.02, Developer Toys for Bob has added subtitles in all supported languages across the three games for previously unsupported cinematics. This includes character headers to identify active speakers, succinct line splits for readability and colored text for improved character association in most languages - while unconfirmed, this seems like it would make Spyro’s text purple, Hunter’s orange, etc. Subtitles can be toggled on and off in the options menu.

Why Did a First-Time Game Developer Turn Down 12 Publishers?
Wlad Marhulets seems to be one of those people who's just good at everything. He’s traditionally made his living as a composer, writing everything from clarinet concertos to the score for an upcoming VR film about Eminem (I don’t know either). You’d think he’d be happy with the several awards he’s won for that work but, in 2015, he decided to try something new in his spare time, a little creative hobby project. “I downloaded Unity and learned a little bit of coding and 3D modeling”, he tells me over email. “A month later I had a little demo - it was 2-3 minutes of gameplay maybe, it was barely playable.”
What he'd created was the first version of Darq, a horror-soaked puzzle-platformer about a boy who becomes aware that he’s inside his own nightmare, and uses the fluidity of lucid dreaming to get out. After a friend urged him to create a trailer and upload it to the now-defunct Steam Greenlight, it became one of the top 10 most upvoted games on the service (of almost 2,000) within two weeks. Articles were written, social media discussion was had, and Marhulets made the fairly radical decision to turn Darq into his full-time job.
Correction: Fortnite Cross-Platform Play Pools Reorganized
Editor's note and update: An earlier version of this story inaccurately and falsely explained the latest changes to Fortnite's cross-platform play feature. The article previously and incorrectly stating cross-play had been restricted on the Nintendo Switch to only be functional with mobile players, which is not in fact the case — the starting pools of cross-platform players is what has been adjusted.
A representative for Epic confirmed to IGN our misreading of the patch notes, notes that Switch players platform can still play and party up with players on any other platform and that no restrictions have been made.
IGN regrets this error and apologizes to our readers for this incorrect information. An updated story follows.
