How Kill la Kill Went from Anime to Game

Members of Studio Trigger, Arc System Works, and APlus sat at a long, white table, surrounded by long, white walls. One dirty dry-erase board, a clock, and a calendar served as mild decor for the meeting room. For all the style seen in Trigger anime, I was surprised to find myself in perhaps the bleakest space I've ever been in when I visited the animation studio’s Tokyo office to sit in on a Kill la Kill the Game: IF approval meeting. This is where the three companies come together to make big decisions regarding the Kill la Kill game, and despite the room’s starkness, their impressively efficient meeting was anything but.

In roughly 40 minutes the group discussed what its Nintendo Switch cartridge would look like, merchandise samples, incredibly specific color details for a character’s sailor collar and ribbon, alternate colors for all the fighters that honor Arc System Works characters, the number of life fiber lines as background details on a promotional card, a new TV trailer, upcoming convention plans, how much of the protagonist’s butt could be exposed on a certain system’s cover art… the list goes on. The meeting encapsulated the feeling I got from every interview I’ve done with each of the teams; Kill la Kill the Game: IF is the fruit of an intense collaboration between these three companies, and each of them has something unique to offer to it – and even more unique takeaways from the project.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare to Feature Cross-Play

The recently announced Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is set to feature cross-play and won’t have a season pass.

In an official statement from Infinity Ward, the team plans for Modern Warfare to be played together across PC and console through cross-play support. It wasn’t clarified if this means PlayStation 4 and Xbox One players will be able to play together, or if it simply means PS4 and Xbox One players can join games with PC players separately.

Beyond this news, Infinity Ward revealed it’s eliminating a traditional season pass from Modern Warfare, so the team can “deliver more free maps and content as well as post-launch events to all players.” Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’s season pass runs for $50 and includes 12 additional maps, exclusive characters, additional zombie modes and more.

Why Infinity Ward Decided to Reboot Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

IGN had the chance to speak with Infinity Ward narrative director Taylor Kurosaki about why the studio decided to reboot Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and what that means for its characters and story.

“When we set out to make this game, we asked ourselves ‘what does the word ‘modern’ followed by the word ‘warfare’ mean?’” Kurosaki told IGN. “Modern warfare, in 2019, means the theater of war is even less defined now than it was back when those first games were made. It’s more complex. It’s more grey. It less mimics what traditional warfare meant.”

Kurosaki continued, speaking on how warfare has changed since 2007’s Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. “That was a game that was sort of built on the aftermath of things like 9/11 and Operation Desert Storm, where you saw big phalanxes of tanks rolling across the desert fighting against other enemies that were wearing uniforms and were flying flags – it was sort of traditional, in a more modern sense.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Is a Reboot, Not a Sequel

Developer Infinity Ward and publisher Activision have announced 2019’s Call of Duty game, which is called Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Yes, it’s a reboot of the 2007 classic Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (as had been rumored), not a Modern Warfare remaster, prequel, remake, or sequel.

What is the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Reboot?

The new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will feature returning characters like Captain Price in a new “ripped from the headlines” single-player campaign. It will also include a suite of PvP multiplayer modes, as series tradition dictates, as well as "an all-new cooperative play mode, featuring a collection of strategic co-op missions."

How Jon Favreau Directed The Lion King Inside a Video Game

Disney’s upcoming film The Lion King brings the classic animated feature into the realm of live-action. Not an easy task, what with all the singing and dancing animals. At the helm of this tricky endeavor is director Jon Favreau, who cut his teeth on the animated-to-real life game with 2016’s The Jungle Book. I visited the set of Lion King with a small group of press to witness Favreau’s filmmaking process and was intrigued to see the entire thing was essentially shot in an intricate virtual reality video game.

Explaining Favreau’s Vision

But before we get to the technical particulars, it’s relevant to hear why Favreau felt the need to take the lead on this movie in the first place. After all, many deem the original to be a masterpiece as-is, so why mess with perfection? Favreau pointed to the celebrated Lion King stage show as a worthy adaptation of the animated original -- and to his point, it has earned over $1 billion to become the highest grossing Broadway production of all time -- and his goal is to create a third take on the beloved tale that tells The Lion King’s timeless story with what he described as the spectacle of a BBC wildlife documentary.
