Star Wars: Rian Johnson Responds to Last Jedi Luke Skywalker Criticism
Rian Johnson, the writer and director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, has defended his portrayal of Luke Skywalker in Episode VIII in response to a detailed critique of the character development in the film.
Johnson vocalised his opinion of Luke's characterization on Twitter, as he directly replied to someone who had shared a detailed post from another user, critiquing how the hero's story arc differs in The Last Jedi compared to the original trilogy.
The case study, from an account titled 'Not Rian's Luke', highlights key scenes from the franchise to illustrate the author's personal issues with Luke's attitude and behaviour at pivotal moments in The Last Jedi, which they argue "undermines the central conflict of the original trilogy AND the prequels", claiming Johnson "attempts to overwrite six films-worth of arcs of the main franchise characters (Anakin and Luke)."

The Best Lead Performer in a Movie in 2019
IGN's Best Lead Performer in a Movie category focuses on the performances that were indelible in 2019, actors and actresses who inhabited their roles and became someone else entirely. Some played real historical figures, some revived beloved and iconic roles from yesteryear, some created entirely new characters, but all were amazing.
This is our winner for the Best Lead Performer in a Movie of 2019.
Best Lead Performer in a Movie in 2019: Joaquin Phoenix (Joker)
The Best Supporting Performer in a Movie in 2019
IGN's Best Supporting Performer in a Movie category recognizes the actors and actresses who were not quite the stars of their films, but who made a big impression nonetheless. 2019's nominees run the gamut from players in comedies to thrillers to horror to straight-up dramas, but they all left their mark on the year in film.

The Best Movie Ensemble in 2019
Sometimes a movie's cast is the real star, and there were certainly many cases like this in 2019, where no one actor was as important to the proceedings as the entire ensemble. With this category, we seek to recognize the many over the one.
This is our winner for the Best Movie Ensemble in 2019.
Best Movie Ensemble of 2019: Avengers: Endgame
While Infinity War did its best to juggle an enormous roster of heroes spanning the entirety of the MCU’s history (to mixed results, depending on who you ask), Endgame rightly narrows its focus to the original six Avengers (with an assist from their fellow survivors), giving them each a well-deserved moment -- or several -- in the spotlight. While the cost of sidelining so many characters is high, it pays off brilliantly, with fans of the MCU’s holy trinity of Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor getting plenty of iconic moments to satisfy them.
The Best Movie Director in 2019
IGN's Best Movie Director category zooms in on the all-important person behind the camera who made the best films of the year possible. Sometimes the result is a great superhero movie, sometimes it's a gripping drama, and once in a while it's an unforgettable comedy. But none of these movies would be possible without the directors who brought them to life.
This is our winner for the Best Movie Director in 2019.
