Rollback Netcode Is Coming to Dragon Ball FighterZ

Dragon Ball FighterZ fans have finally gathered the seven Dragon Balls to make their wishes come true, as Bandai Namco announced that rollback netcode is coming to the popular fighting game.

Revealed after the Dragon Ball FighterZ Grand Finals at EVO 2022, Producer Tomoko Hiroki shared a message with fans saying that the long-awaited feature is finally coming Dragon Ball FighterZ.

Hiroki also confirmed that PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions of Dragon Ball FighterZ are in development. If you want to take advantage of the game's upcoming rollback netcode functionality, you'll need to play on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or PC.

Fortunately, Hiroki said Bandai Namco is planning a way for owners of the PS4 and Xbox One versions to upgrade to the current-gen release once it's available. There was no mention of rollback netcode support for the Nintendo Switch version of the game. No timetable for rollback netcode or the current-gen release was given.

Rollback netcode is a huge deal for a fighting game's online viability and longevity. If you're unfamiliar with the term, rollback netcode is designed to create a nearly lagless online experience for fighting game players. In games with delay-based netcode, players have to deal with a noticeable amount of input delay when playing online. In a fighting game, where every frame of gameplay matters, even the slightest delay can ruin a game's competitive online scene.

Rollback netcode is as close as online play can get to in-person competition, making virtual tournaments and events competively viable. The Dragon Ball FighterZ community has been asking for rollback netcode for years now. Earlier this year, Bandai Namco postponed the Dragon Ball FighterZ World Championship Finals due to COVID-19. While games with rollback netcode may have been able to transition events like this to the internet, Dragon Ball FighterZ fans just had to wait, as their online gameplay wasn't suited for a competitive tournament.

Beyond the big rollback netcode reveal, Hiroki said that there are no current plans to add more fighters or balance changes to the game, meaning Dragon Ball FighterZ is essentially content complete.

Dragon Ball FighterZ originally released in 2018 on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. A Switch version was later released. In our original review, we said, "Dragon Ball FighterZ is an inviting gateway into the world of fighting games for newcomers — whether you’re a Dragon Ball fan or not." The game also topped our list of the best anime to video game adaptations.

Giancarlo Esposito Has Talked With Marvel, Wants to Play Professor X

It seems most high-profile actors are making their way to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and now Giancarlo Esposito is hinting that he'd like to join the MCU.

In a TikTok posted by coundownsitygeeks, Esposito was shown taking the stage at the TJH Superhero Car Show & Comic Con in San Antonio, Texas. Responding to a fan question, Esposito said that while the internet would love to see him as an iconic villain like Magneto, or even Doctor Doom, he'd love to play Professor X.

"I have not worked for Marvel yet. I've been in the room with them and talked to them," Esposito said, "I'm gonna go for something that's a little bit different. I'm gonna go and put it out in the universe that [I'd like to play] Professor X."

Esposito is best known for his role as Gus Fring in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. He has also appeared in The Boys and The Mandalorian. Video game fans will also recognize him in Far Cry 6, where he plays the main villain Anton Castillo. The actor is often cast as the bid bag, so a turn as Professor X would be a shakeup for him and for fans.

Charles Xavier is the founder and occasional leader of the X-Men in Marvel Comics. On the big screen, both Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy played the character in Fox's X-Men universe. Stewart briefly reprised the role in Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness, but that appearance is best described as no more than a cameo. So, we're still waiting for the MCU's version of Professor X to arrive.

Fans have been waiting for mutants to join the MCU ever since Disney's acquisition of Fox in 2019. While we haven't seen any X-Men show up outside of cameos, the Ms. Marvel Disney+ series did make a big reference toward the group of superhero mutants.

We know that the MCU's Phase 6 includes a Fantastic Four movie and two Avengers films, so it's possible that whatever comes after The Infinity Saga could be the big arrival party for the MCU's mutants. While fans wait for more info about X-Men in the MCU, they can look forward to the X-Men '97 series coming to Disney+ next year.

French Physicist’s Beautiful Proxima Centauri Photo Turns Out to Be a Piece of Chorizo

Earlier this week, French physicist Etienne Klein seemed to post a photo of Proxima Centauri, the closest known star to our own, located some 4.2 light years away. The photo was gorgeous and quickly amassed thousands of likes.

There was just one problem: the photo was actually just a bit of chorizo.

As translated by IGN, Klein originally posted the photo with the caption, "Closest photo of Proxima Centauri, the star that's closest to the sun, located 4.2 light years away from us. It was taken by the [James Webb Space Telescope]. This level of detail…a new world is revealed day after day."

It quickly emerged that the photo was fake; one scientist's practical joke.

"Well, when it’s time for the aperitif, cognitive biases seem to have a field day, so watch out for them," Klein tweeted. "According to the contemporary cosmology, no object belonging to Spanish charcuterie exists anywhere but on Earth."

He then warned against online misinformation.

"When seeing certain comments, I feel an obligation to specify the tweet showing an alleged snapshot of Proxima Centauri was a form of amusement. After this we have to beware of arguments from authority as much as the spontaneous eloquence of certain images."

If Klein wanted to draw attention to misinformation, then mission accomplished. The tweet was reported in several major publications worldwide and continues to circulate online.

Thankfully, there are plenty of actual photos from the James Webb Space Telescope, which was successfully deployed on January 24. The telescope's mission is to view objects too distance and faint for the Hubble Space Telescope. Its first image was tweeted by President Biden, and it has subsequently returned other images as well.

Amazon’s Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power Reportedly Wanted Peter Jackson, Then Ghosted Him

Peter Jackson is famously not involved in Amazon's Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power series, which is deliberately trying to keep itself separate from Jackson's famous trilogy. But there was evidently a point when the studio was at least willing to entertain the possibility, even going so far as to reach out to Jackson directly. When the director asked for scripts, though, Amazon apparently abruptly went silent.

“They asked me if I wanted to be involved – [writer and producer Fran Walsh] and I – and I said, ‘That’s an impossible question to answer without seeing a script,'” Jackson told The Hollywood Reporter. "So they said, 'As soon as we get the first couple scripts, we'll send them to you.' And the scripts never showed up. That's the last thing I heard, which is fine. No complaints at all."

Jackson jumpstarted the epic fantasy genre 20 years ago with his Lord of the Rings trilogy, paving the way for Game of Thrones and many other shows. He is a big reason why Amazon is betting big on the new series, spending hundreds of millions dollars on the rights and the production.

Amazon responded in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, "In pursuing the rights for our show, we were obligated to keep the series distinct and separate from the films. We have the utmost respect for Peter Jackson and The Lord of The Rings films and are thrilled that he is looking forward to the watching The Rings of Power."

Nevertheless, the Rings of Power showrunners are said to be fans of Jackson's and were interested in making overtures, THR reports. Former head of genre programming Sharon Tal Yguado was also reportedly interested in getting Jackson involved. However, the hurdles would have been significant, with the Tolkien Estate among the stakeholders reportedly opposed to him having a role in the show owing to Christopher Tolkien's criticism of the original movies.

Amazon originally spent $250 million in a bidding war to acquire the rights to Lord of the Rings, giving the streaming giant access to The Fellow of the Rings, The Two Towers, Return of the King, and The Hobbit — but not The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, or The History of Middle-earth.

The Rings of Power will focus on Lord of the Rings' Second Age, thousands of years before the original Lord of the Rings takes place. It will include familiar faces like Elrond, though other names like Gandalf are yet to be confirmed.

As for Jackson, he says he bears the show no ill will. "I’ll be watching it. I'm not the sort of guy who wishes ill will. Filmmaking is hard enough. If somebody makes a good film or TV show, it’s something to celebrate. The one thing I am looking forward to is actually seeing it as a perfectly neutral viewer.”

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will release on September 2. Check out all of our coverage, including why the show was a winner at San Diego Comic-Con as well as five exclusive clips from the show.

Mario Kart 8’s Coconut Mall Track Got a Wild Update, And the Internet Is Taking Notice

This week, Nintendo released the second wave of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's Booster Course Pass DLC, which included Sky High Sundae — an entirely new addition to the Mario Kart franchise.

Nintendo's announcement was followed up with a video that that took the Internet by surprise. It revealed that Coconut Mall, a course first introduced on the Wii, would be receiving a slight update. In the new version, the Shy Guy drivers waiting near the finish line — the last obstacle drivers face upon reaching the finish line — will do chaotic donut spins in their attempts to slow down players.

Something like this best seen, so here’s the video linked that shows you the update, and how the Shy Guys try to donut spin you way off the course.

The video, showing Princess Peach getting slammed by a Shy Guy after being blasted by a red shell, went viral, as of now generating over 33 thousand likes and more than 700,000 views.

The internet obviously couldn’t resist the meme potential this latest gem possessed.

@TheNCSmaster tweeting out this hilarious video comparison of how the Shy Guys are basically competing in the same donut-spining competition that Mordecai and Rigby enter, in order to get a cameo in their favorite cop show in the episode Carter and Briggs of Regular Show.

@ElliotDuby didn’t exactly Call Saul, but he did reference the Breaking Bad episode where Walter White goes crazy doing donut spins in Walter Jr.’s red Dodge Challenger SRT8.

Most hilarious though, was the out of context Ronald McDonald page, @McDonaldsOOC, tweeting this funny video of good ol’ Ron spinning out in a weird McDonald’s mobile.

But of course, the meme potential is unlimited, and this is only a highlight of the more than 2,800 quote tweets attached, so go check out the rest for yourself in the original tweet linked above!

Tarantino ‘Loved’ Top Gun Maverick: ‘A True Cinematic Spectacle’

Surprisingly, or maybe not, filmmaker Quentin Tarantino absolutely loved Top Gun: Maverick.

During an interview with the ReelBlend Podcast, the 59-year-old filmmaker explained that he doesn’t usually weigh in on popular movies… but he couldn’t hold back his love for the Top Gun sequel.

“I f**king love Top Gun: Maverick,” he said. “I thought it was fantastic. I saw it at the theaters… That and [Steven] Spielberg’s West Side Story both provided a true cinematic spectacle, the kind that I’d almost thought that I wasn’t going to see anymore. It was fantastic.”

“I don’t like to talk about new films because then I’m only forced to say good things, or else I’m ‘slamming’ someone,” he explained. “I don’t want to do that.”

Tarantino certainly echoes the sentiments of many critics – Top Gun: Maverick was the kind of big, loud blockbuster that we haven’t seen for a few years. After all, the effect of COVID-19 on the film industry all but decimated the summer tentpole.

But when Top Gun: Maverick blew away audiences earlier this year, it was taken as a sign that big, loud, event cinema was back. Whether or not it has a longer-term effect remains to be seen. But for Tarantino, it was also a quite personal affair.

“There was just this lovely, lovely aspect because I love both [Top Gun director] Tony Scott’s cinema so much, and I love Tony so much that that’s as close as we’re ever going to get to seeing one more Tony Scott movie,” he added. “[Director Joseph Kosinski] did a great job. The respect and the love of Tony was in every frame. It was almost in every decision. It was consciously right there, but in this really cool way that was really respectful. I think it was in every decision Tom [Cruise] made on the film. It’s the closest we’re ever going get to seeing one more Tony Scott movie, and it was a fucking terrific one.”

Tarantino wrote True Romance which was directed by Scott and also worked with the famed filmmaker on Crimson Tide.

He also explained that he approached Tom Cruise before the film was released to ask how they could possibly make it without Scott behind the camera. Cruise reportedly replied: “I know; that’s why I said no all these years — for that exact reason. We figured out a way.”

Conversely, he was almost pushed away by the almost-cheesy reunion between Cruise and his nemesis, Val Kilmer’s Iceman. Almost.

“It was almost too cheap, but it absolutely works,” he said. “It’s a bit like Charlie Chaplin dying onstage for the last scene of Limelight… but it fucking works. You’re waiting for it and the fucking scene delivers.”

Top Gun: Maverick has made more money at the U.S. box office than the original Avengers movie, and has become Paramount’s top-grossing film of all time.
