Quentin Tarantino to Direct Once Upon a Time Spinoff Series Bounty Law

Quentin Tarantino has revealed that he will direct the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood spinoff series, Bounty Law, based on the fictional TV show within the Oscar-nominated movie. Speaking to Deadline, Tarantino shared his plans to break out the Western drama, originally starring Rick Dalton as gunslinger Jake Cahill, to create a limited series with five half-hour episodes, which he plans to direct. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/10/28/once-upon-a-timein-hollywood-deleted-scene"] "As far as the Bounty Law shows, I want to do that, but it will take me a year and a half," he told the outlet. "It got an introduction from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, but I don't really consider it part of that movie even though it is. This is not about Rick Dalton playing Jake Cahill. It's about Jake Cahill." Tarantino went on to discuss some of the influences behind the Bounty Law series that features in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, as he spoke about the classic Western TV shows that he watched to switch his mindset over to that genre. "Where all this came from was, I ended up watching a bunch of Wanted, Dead or Alive, and The Rifleman, and Tales of Wells Fargo, these half-hour shows to get in the mindset of Bounty Law, the kind of show Rick was on," he said. "I'd liked them before, but I got really into them. The concept of telling a dramatic story in half an hour. You watch and think, wow, there's a helluva lot of storytelling going on in 22 minutes. I thought, I wonder if I can do that? I ended up writing five half-hour episodes. So I'll do them, and I will direct all of them." [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=once-upon-a-time-in-hollywood-gallery&captions=true"] In addition to Bounty Law, we can expect to see more footage from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood in the future, as Tarantino previously hinted that the full four-hour cut could be released "maybe in a year's time." Meanwhile, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood has been nominated for several Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Original Screenplay, as well as Best Director. The comedy-drama was also a contributor to IGN's Most Epic Movie Moments of 2019. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Adele Ankers is a Freelance Entertainment Journalist. You can reach her on Twitter.

Hunt: Showdown Gets PS4 Release Date, Xbox Cross-Play Planned

Crytek has announced the release date and future plans for Hunt: Showdown on PlayStation 4, which includes cross-play with the Xbox One version.

The competitive bounty-hunting shooter will be available on PS4 from February 18, 2020. The physical version of the Xbox One version will be released on the same day.

[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2018/02/01/what-is-hunt-showdown"]

Crytek was able to move forward with the console versions thanks to bringing on publisher Koch Media who will be handling them going forward. This frees up Crytek so it can focus on developing updates for the game and handling the PC version.

“Update 1.2 is slated to bring random teams of three, an advanced tutorial, new Legendary Hunters, and new equipment and weapons across the board,” Crytek revealed. “Players can also expect server-side performance improvements, client CPU performance fixes, and a number of other general bug fixes.”

Beyond that update, Crytek says the plan is to add cross-play between the Xbox One and PS4 versions of Hunt: Showdown. There will also be a new map, solo PvE mode, live events, and outfit customisation.

Hunt: Showdown is the latest game by Crysis and Far Cry 1 developer Crytek. It’s a competitive shooter in which 12 players - in teams or solo - try to track down and kill beasts and then reach the extraction point with the bounty. It’s especially exciting as players can choose to cooperate to then betray each other at any moment.

It came out on PC and Xbox One in 2019 after being in Early Access for a while. It started off with a single map that captured its 1895 Louisiana setting but since then has got a second map.

Grand Theft Auto 5 Is the USA’s Best-Selling Game of the Decade

Grand Theft Auto 5 has taken the top spot for best selling game of the decade in the United States of America. According to the NPD Group (via games industry commentator DomsPlaying on Twitter), which tracks market and shopping trends, Grand Theft Auto 5 leads the ranks in best selling games of the decade in the US. It's followed by five different Call of Duty games, which are interrupted by Red Dead Redemption 2 for the seventh spot, before returning to more Call of Duty. Modern Warfare also took out the top spot for best selling games in 2019 in the US. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/12/31/the-best-games-of-the-decade-2010-2019"] For those unfamiliar with the incredible success of Grand Theft Auto 5, in 2018 it was listed as making more money than any film, book, or game. It's now on Xbox Game Pass for anyone who's missed out though it won't be getting a movie adaptation, despite the evident popularity. Better Call Saul Renewed for Sixth and Final Season

AMC's Better Call Saul has been renewed for a sixth and final season ahead of its Season 5 premiere. The announcement was made by showrunner Peter Gould at the Television Critics Association's winter press tour. "From day one of Better Call Saul, my dream was to tell the complete story of our complicated and compromised hero, Jimmy McGill – now AMC and Sony are making that dream come true,” Gould said. “We couldn’t be more grateful to the fans and critics who are making this journey possible. Next month we start work on the sixth and final season — we’re going to do our damnedest to stick the landing." Gould went on to say that Season 6 will premiere sometime in 2021. When asked about the possibility for more spinoffs set within the Breaking Bad universe (especially following the positive reviews El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie received from fans and critics), executive producer Vince Gilligan said, "I think you can put too much hot fudge on a sundae. I certainly don't have any plans to keep the universe going after this wonderful series ends. You don't want to drive it into the ground." [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=better-call-saul-season-5-gallery&captions=true"] Gould also spilled the beans about some iconic Breaking Bad characters making cameos in Season 5, so stop reading now if you want to avoid spoilers... While we're not sure how these characters will be featured, Gould did say that Dean Norris will return as Hank Schrader during episodes 3 and 4 of Better Call Saul Season 5. Steven Michael Quezada will also appear as Steven Gomez. Gould declined to reveal if we'd see other Breaking Bad characters in Season 5, however, he did confirm that Aaron Paul's Jesse Pinkman and Bryan Cranston's Walter White will not be making guest appearances. Funko's latest addition to its Marvel's Avengers Assemble collection of Pops has been dubbed "I Am Iron Man" and will pay tribute to Tony Stark's noble sacrifice at the end of Avengers Endgame. The Pop will be released in April and is currently available for pre-order at Entertainment Earth. The new Iron Man Funko Pop will cost $15 and is currently marked as a Previews Exclusive, which means it will only be available in a limited quantity at select retailers. Unfortunately, Funko hasn't announced when the Pop will be hitting stores, so if you want to pick one up, it'd be best to grab one via the pre-order link above, while supplies last. [caption id="" align="alignnone" width="1200"] I Am Iron Man Funko, via Entertainment Earth[/caption] Funko's Avengers Assemble collection will include a total of six Pops (at the time of writing) over the course of 2020, all of which can be linked together to form an "Avengers assemble" style set. The first of the six will be released later this month, with a new one coming around every other month, according to ComicBook.com. To complete the Avengers Assemble collection, players will need to keep an eye out for the Black Widow, Captain America, Hawkeye, Hulk, and now the "I Am Iron Man" release date announcements. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=every-dead-mcu-character&captions=true"] Robert Downey Jr. recently made some comments about whether he'd return to the MCU in some capacity, but it's unclear if or when that might actually ever happen. Endgame was one of the biggest box office winners in 2019, officially passing Avatar as the highest-grossing box office film of all time. However, James Cameron says that Avatar will end up beating Endgame when it's all said and done. Additionally, be sure to check out IGN's official Avengers: Endgame review. Christopher Tolkien, Son of Lord of the Rings Author, Dies at 95

Christopher Tolkien, the son of Lord of the Rings author J.R.R. Tolkien, has died at the age of 95. News of his death came from a statement on the Tolkien Society website Thursday.

“It is with great sadness that we can confirm that Tolkien’s son and literary executor Christopher Tolkien has died aged 95,” the statement said.

[caption id="attachment_2288696" align="aligncenter" width="720"]The late Christopher Tolkien. The late Christopher Tolkien.[/caption]

The Head of the Tolkien Estate

After his father passed away in 1973, Christopher became the literary executor of the Tolkien Estate, and it was he who edited The Silmarillion and had it published in 1977, as well as The Fall of Gondolin in 2018, which were based on his father’s unpublished Lord of the Rings material.

Christopher drew the maps of Middle-earth featured in the Lord of the Rings books.

[caption id="attachment_228870" align="aligncenter" width="720"]EObusoeUwAE6VQo Map of Middle-earth drawn by Christopher Tolkien.[/caption]

The Lord of the Rings Films

Christopher was a vocal critic of The Lord of the Rings film trilogy based on his father’s work. He expressed his distaste for the Peter Jackson films, saying in a 2012 interview about Lord of the Rings with French newspaper Le Monde, "They gutted the book, making an action film for 15 to 25-year-olds."

His frustrations with the Lord of the Rings films took form in a series of lawsuits, one of which he claimed New Line Cinema owed the Tolkien family £80 million in unpaid royalties. In 2009, an undisclosed settlement was reached between the two parties, and he retracted his public objection to The Hobbit films based on his father’s work.

A Look Back at the Life of Christopher Tolkien

Christopher was born in Leeds, United Kingdom on November 21, 1924, fought in World War II as part of the Royal Air Force, and became a lecturer in Old and Middle English as well as Old Icelandic at the University of Oxford.

A Tribute to Christopher Tolkien

Mark Ordesky, producer on The Lord of the Rings movies, expressed his condolences on social media, tweeting, “An age of Middle-earth has ended. We have Christopher Tolkien to thank for countless vistas and legends we might never have known without his dedication and stewardship. The world is brighter for the light you cast, like the Star of Eärendil.”

Star Wars: Taika Waititi Reportedly Approached for New Movie

Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit, Thor: Ragnarok) has reportedly been approached about directing a new Star Wars movie. Waititi is already a part of the Lucasfilm family, having directed the Season 1 finale of The Mandalorian as well as voicing the role of IG-11 on the Disney+ series. According to THR, the current state of talks between Waititi and Disney/Lucasfilm is "unclear." Both companies declined to comment to THR. "It is also unclear whether the project is separate from the one being developed by Kevin Feige, with whom [Waititi] closely worked on Ragnarok, or a separate Star Wars project," the trade adds. Deadline claims "it’s not clear yet if [Waititi's film is] a feature for Disney+ or the big screen. Early talks isn’t even the word yet here." Update: After these initial reports, Waititi posted a wordless tweet that included the cover of Fleetwood Mac's aptly named "Rumours" album. While many have tried to eke out information from Waititi after the tweet, the best response perhaps came from Baby Driver Director Edgar Wright, who wrote, "That's an odd photo of Han and Leia." Waititi was asked about the prospect of ever directing a Star Wars movie just this past Monday, telling Variety: "Oh, I don’t know anything about that. But Mandalorian was my chance to work with some stormtroopers." Waititi reportedly told Variety that helming a Star Wars movie was something he was interested in pursuing: "Obviously I would, but I’m going to just settle for IG-11 being the hero of the entire season." While Star Wars seems to have a promising future ahead on the small screen -- with Disney+ moving forward with the second season of The Mandalorian as well as a solo Obi-Wan Kenobi series and a Cassian Andor-led Rogue One prequel series — the feature film franchise has been dogged by drops in ticket sales for both The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker (yes, despite both films crossing the $1 billion mark worldwide) and behind-the-scenes creative friction that has seen several directors fired from their Star Wars movies. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=star-wars-and-its-weird-recent-history-of-director-drop-outs&captions=true"] Lucasfilm most recently opted to shelve the Star Wars film trilogy that was in the works with Game of Thrones' David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, and there's been nary a peep on Rian Johnson's planned trilogy. Johnson is now working on a sequel to his hit film Knives Out. If Waititi is being eyed for the Feige-produced Star Wars film, the Marvel Studios boss has said his film will take viewers to new corners of the galaxy far, far away. Waititi is Oscar-nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay for Jojo Rabbit. His next film, Next Goal Wins, is in production and he then segues to direct Thor: Love and Thunder for Marvel. Waititi recently told IGN that he still hopes to direct a live-action Akira movie but it's been postponed until after Thor: Love and Thunder. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/08/24/the-mandalorian-taika-waititi-on-finding-the-voice-of-ig-11"] Disney has carved out release dates for three new Star Wars movies after The Rise of Skywalker. The first of these was to have been the first Weiss and Benioff film, coming on December 16, 2022. The other two dates are December 20, 2024, and December 18, 2026, though it's not clear if those dates belonged to the other Beinoff and Weiss movies or Rian Johnson's films or possibly a combination of both. Rumors suggest Lucasfilm will announce a new director for the December 2022 movie as early as January 2020.
